Someone on the theory thread mentioned that Burke wouldn't have wanted pineapple. Not wanting to discuss on that thread I'll say here that I don't necessarily believe what Patsy said. I was going by his fingerprints on the bowl and the rest of the table being cleaned off. Plus he was probably still downstairs with a toy. That was probably true since he might tell people he was up awhile instead of going straight to bed.
Fingerprints can remain for a long time. The premise that BR's (or PR's) prints had to be made at the time JBR ate pineapple does not have to be true. IOWs the fingerprints of either br/pr could have been made hours earlier.
For example, PR might have prepared such a bowl of pineapple prior to the party, put it back in the 'fridge (or even left it out) and BR handled the bowl later. We can spin lots of scenarios, but the point is the prints don't necessarily correspond to the time of the snack. Even if you want to say the snack was prepared by PR or BR after returning home, the other prints (PR or BR) could be there from earlier. (It might be interesting to know how many sets of prints were found so we'd have a clue as to how many times the bowl was handled. It might also be interesting to know what specific prints were found. I'd think PR could handle that bowl with one hand, whereas BR might need both hands)
What the pineapple really tells us is that collusion between JR/PR is unlikely. The story they'd like the cops to believe is that the boogeyman did it after the family went to bed. The boogeyman story is neither more nor less credible if JBR sat down at the table and had pineapple after returning home. So, why lie about it?
If she popped a few pieces in her mouth w/o the parents knowledge, then as far as they know, JBR did not eat pineapple and was not served pineapple. We know they had all the interview questions ahead of time. We know they were prepped by their attorneys for this question. So why lie if it does not hurt the boogeyman theory? So if they both knew of the snack and they were colluding, then the story would be they served pineapple to JBR. Nothing is lost by saying it. PR would just say she fixed pineapple for the kids, then JBR went to bed while BR stayed up putting together a toy with JR.
OTOH, if one parent knew, and the other did not, then one parent is telling the truth, to the extent she/he understands the situation, while the other is going along out of necessity -that parent can't tip the other that there was a post-bedtime pineapple snack.
JMO, if PR prepped the snack, for both kids, there would at least have been two spoons, and they'd be teaspoons. Instead we find a single table spoon. IMO more likely prepared by JR or BR w/o regard to the niceties of proper tableware use. I don't see both kids using a single spoon, and going from mouth to mouth and mouth to community bowl. But who knows. Sometimes families share germs.
I agree the story about being downstairs with a toy was probably true. The Rs would know BR would be questioned.
