I'm impressed with the Sex Offender classification on the Driver License. I've never heard of that before. If what we are hearing is true (the person at the car dealership called LE), this has turned out to be valuable.

I'm curious though, how in "normal life" activities, this really does anything. The only thing I show my DL for is buying alcohol, once in awhile using a credit card, or boarding a plane - all things legal for a RSO. Is it for LE if they pull the guy over?

-Chief Craft confirmed a truck registered to Brandon Lavergne was found burned in Texas. That truck also matches the pics of the white truck seen in the same area as Mickey the night she disappeared. Police say Lavergne bought a new truck just like the one seen in the pics days later.

IMO there could be some insurance fraud as well. Possibly even with the previous home that burned. Things that make you go huh?

This is possible. It may have been an unintentional accident and because of his past history he became afraid. It sounds like he recently had a lot going for him-a good job, a girlfriend, and a nice truck. At that time of night he may have just left a club and been drinking, was fearful of getting a DUI, and maybe she died right away or he thought she was dead. It is possible as well that he planned on helping her and then decided against it. Impaired people do things that are not always in their best judgement. It may have nothing to do with his history as a RSO. Or it could have everything to do with it. Unless there's a body and or he tells us, we may never know.

Then why was he driving around looking for a victim as the LPD stated?

You have to show ID to rent a house for one example - and RSO are limited to where they can live.

kay, not EVERYTHING -- but much more than the average bear thinks. And now---the case is solved---can I please find out what the heck was on that placard that was on that silver box overthe right wheel hub? It has kept me awake at night trying to figure it out. Could someone who knows Mr. Lavergne please report to me what the words were on that silver work box? It is probably not important to anyone else, but I worked hard to try to figure that one out. And does thismean that the truck inthe photo was a 2011model? Can someone clarify that for me? The truck was a 2011 white Chevy? Thanks.

Definitely not a quote but someone mentioned it being the WG logo for Wood Group in red letters. Someone else stated the truck did have red letters on it. All this was posted here yesterday. I think it may have been you that could tell there were red letters that looked like an M and G?

No, you're incorrect. Being held against your will can constitute kidnapping. The girl was held against her will.

Kidnapping v. false imprisonment.

Kidnapping occurs when a person, without lawful authority, physically moves another person without that other person’s consent, with the intent to use the abduction in connection with some other nefarious objective. Kidnapping may be done for ransom or political purpose or other purposes. Kidnapping can be of first degree or second degree. Kidnapping is a crime which is punishable upon successful prosecution.

False imprisonment, on the other hand, gives rise to a civil claim for damages. False imprisonment means the illegal confinement of one individual without his or her consent by another individual in such a manner as to violate the confined individual’s right to be free from restraint of movement.

Reading that inclines me to believe that his first victim was not kidnapped.

I have seen online evidence that he was specifically brought to the attention of authorities immediately after the white truck videos were released.
Brandon was engaged to a woman who has two young children. Her family was very upset that she was going to marry an RSO. So they had been looking for ways to prevent that marriage BEFORE they even knew about the white truck connection. So they made sure that LE knew about him when that video was released.

So IMO, they knew about him quite awhile ago. But they needed to get their ducks all in a nice row before pulling the trigger. And I agree, LE has been doing a good job it seems. Maybe we should stop some of the blind criticism at this time.

LE may have been tracking him in the hopes that he would return to Mickey or her recovery site.

The way this unfolded sounds an awful lot like Sierra Lamar's case.

I think LE did an EXCELLENT job in this very difficult case.

Trying to catch up and I'm only on page 3 of this thread. I read about the perp burning his truck (the one scene in the surveillance videos). I hate even having to type this but could Mickey's body have been in the truck when he burned it? Could he have hid her in a container of some sort?

When did he burn the truck?

ETA: I just read the press release above. OMG he burned it just days after. :(

I dont think she was in it. They would have found remains and LPD would have found out about the truck much earlier than 6/14

Wondergirl, I removed one of your posts because it doesn't sound like the right person. And yes, there is a resident in the area that shares the same name, so to everyone, please be careful when you post social networking links.

Hi Everyone,

I'll be on the Levi Page show in about an hour talking about Mickey's case and others.

Here is the link.

can someone post a quick recap of anything new please?

All I know is Brandon was arrested and he is a RSO. His truck matched the description.

What's this about the dealership calling the police?

YES, this is unfolding so much like Sierra's case did.

You have the vehicle, and LE showing the picture, and asking for the public's help, and then going silent. Same kind of confusion for the public afterwards...and LE came out and said " No, we are not looking FOR this car anymore, just want to hear from anyone who has seen it around." We were all going HUH?

But the bottom line was the vehicle being seen around the crime scene was the thing that led them to the perp.

And the suspect is very similar in many ways. A previous criminal history, previous abduction attempts, and has a wife/girlfriend/steady relationship as well.

He used "white out" on his driver's license to hide the fact that he was an RSO!!! no link... sorry...
maybe someone else has it? I HOPE!!!

I will give full credit on the show tonight for the person who recaps.

Usually I give away a 10 day cruise but I'm out of those right now so my heartfelt thanks will have to do. ;)

Tricia, this might help.

Arrest Made in Mickey Shunick Case

The Lafayette Police Department would like to extend its appreciation to the Shunick Family, all of the law enforcement agencies involved in this investigation, countless volunteers, private business entities, and the public that have assisted in the search and continue to be there as this investigation remains ongoing. I must caution all of you that although an arrest has been made in this case, much work remains to be done.
Working with our Federal, State and local partners, the Lafayette Police Department has arrested Brandon Scott Lavergne and charged him with 1st Degree Murder and Aggravated Kidnapping. Lavergne is believed to be responsible for the disappearance of Michaela “Mickey” Shunick.
On May 19th of this year, the Shunick family reported Mickey’s disappearance. She had not returned home, missed her brother’s graduation from high school, had notified no one of her location, and did not respond to calls made to her cell phone.
On May 25, video evidence was discovered from an LCG facility that captured Mickey on her bike. Several vehicles were observed in the same video and broadcast to the public as vehicles of interest. All of the vehicles of interest were ruled out except for a white Chevrolet Z71 pickup. The driver as well as the vehicle was not ever identified nor did anyone come forward.
On May 26, Mickey’s bike was located under the Whiskey Bay Bridge on I-10 with damage to the rear tire consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
On June 14, Investigators received information from a concerned citizen, regarding a white Z71 that may be involved in Mickey’s disappearance. The vehicle in question was registered to Brandon Lavergne. Further investigation revealed that the truck was reported stolen in Montgomery County, Texas and later located in San Jacinto County, Texas on May 31st. The truck had been burned just days after police released photographs of the truck as a vehicle of interest.
Based on information and surveillance detectives were able to positively identify the truck that traveled directly behind Mickey in the video as belonging to Brandon Lavergne. Investigators are also able to place Brandon Lavergne in and around the location of where the bicycle was located.
On Thursday, July 5, Louisiana State Police conducted a traffic stop on Lavergne near the intersection of I-10 and I-49. He was arrested on an unrelated warrant and transported to the Lafayette Police Department.
During questioning at Lafayette PD, Lavergne requested an attorney and has refused to cooperate any further with the investigation. At that time, he was additionally charged with the aggravated kidnapping and murder of Mickey Shunick.
This has been a very difficult ordeal for the Shunick Family and we thank them for their continuous cooperation, encouragement, and support in our attempts to determine what happened to Mickey. We want the family to know that we will not rest until we can fully know what happened to her. We continue our efforts to locate and bring Mickey home.
This type of case can overwhelm one agency. A tremendous amount of time, equipment, and resources have been put into this investigation. I would be remiss in my duties if I did not acknowledge and thank all of the agencies and private businesses that have been with us from day one of this case: LPSO, ULPD, Lafayette City Marshal’s Office, LSP, SMSO, SLSO, Iberia SO, Iberville SO, East Baton Rouge SO, Acadia SO, Patterson PD, FBI, US Marshal’s Service, LSP Crime Lab, Acadian Crime Lab, C & C Technologies, and Holbrook Media. It is these types of partnerships that have made an arrest possible in this matter.
I will take questions at this time but I want to caution you that because the investigation is on-going, there is a lot of information that we will not be able to divulge or discuss.

Kidnapping

If someone takes you and holds you anywhere against your will you have been kidnapped. Even if the place you are being held is your own home, if you are not allowed to leave when you want to, that is the crime of kidnap. You do not have to be tied up, handcuffed or otherwise restricted. If you are not allowed to leave a place where you do not want to be, it you are held there either by violence or threat of violence that is kidnapping. A jury can give a sentence of life in prison for kidnapping. If the jury fails to set a sentence, the judge can give up to thirty years in prison.

http://kidnapping.uslegal.com/state-kidnapping-abduction-laws/louisiana-kidnappingabduction-laws/
