Plead not guilty. Held without bond. DA will seek DP.
Trial set to begin in March, 2020.
7/25/18 Update: Additional charges are expected for Smith. 7/28/18: DA charges Smith with criminal conspiracy. 10/16/18: First appearance scheduled for 10/23.
10/23/18 Update: Next hearing on 12/20. 1/24/19 Update: Plead not guilty. Another judicial procedure is set for April 2019 (no exact date); Trial is set for March 2020.
4/30/19 Update: Had Motion hearing re Smith not having an attorney since her arrest & indictment. 5/30/19 Update: Appeared in court. DA will decide whether to seek DP by Aug. 1. 8/1/19: DA will seek DP. Next pretrial hearing on 8/19. Next hearing on 11/7.
11/7/19 Update: Defense attorney for Barker, Dru Thompson, had filed a motion for a change of venue, but Thursday he told 10th Judicial District Court Judge Desiree Duhon Dyess that the state agreed to the change. Barker's trial still will be held in Natchitoches, but the date will be reset once it's determined from which parish the potential jurors will be selected. The case will return to court on Nov. 25 for a hearing on five defense motions.
 
No decision yet on death penalty for woman accused of killing infant

NATCHITOCHES — A decision hasn't been made yet on whether to seek the death penalty for a woman accused in the burning death of a 6-month-old baby, said prosecutors Tuesday during a hearing on multiple motions.

Barker does face the death penalty. Another hearing in her first-degree murder case is set for Nov. 25. A motion to bring potential jurors into Natchitoches from another parish for her trial was approved last week.

The new date for Barker's trial hasn't been determined.

At least 19 defense motions were discussed during Smith's hearing before 10th Judicial District Court Judge Desiree Duhon Dyess, most of them seeking more specific information from the state.

State, defense in Hanna Barker case submit parish choices for jurors


A decision could be made on Dec. 19 on which parish potential jurors would be selected from for the Hanna Nicole Barker first-degree murder case.

Barker's defense attorney, J. Dhu Thompson of Shreveport, and the Natchitoches Parish District Attorney's Office submitted their choices Monday to 10th Judicial District Court Judge Desiree Duhon Dyess, who said she'd begin researching them.

Another hearing for Barker was set for Dec. 19. A new trial date could possibly be discussed at that time.

Thompson, with Barker sitting beside him, named East Baton Rouge, Tensas and St. Landry parishes as the defense's preferences, while Natchitoches District Attorney Billy Joe Harrington said the prosecution offered Beauregard, Vermilion, Jefferson Davis, Washington, Calcasieu and Lafayette parishes.
