Question though, why did they think he was scheduled to return on June 1st if he had booked for 9 days? Wouldn't that have made it June 4th or 5th? :waitasec:

Everything that I'm reading says his return flight was scheduled for June 1st. So that would mean he only intended to stay for 5 days if he left on May 26th?

Some more details about today's cross from Christie B.
A defence psychiatrist concluded five days in the witness stand with the ringing declaration that “only a psychosis” can explain what Luka Magnotta did to Jun Lin, even as it became clearer than ever that this must have been the ne plus ultra of psychoses.
In one little gem, Mr. Boutillier produced a receipt which shows that on the day after Mr. Lin’s killing, as Mr. Magnotta was at a post office shipping off Mr. Lin’s body parts, he was still cool-headed enough to kill the proverbial two birds with one stone — he also bought a money order for $210 made out to a U.S. company.
To all of this, Dr. Allard gave fundamentally the same explanation throughout her week on the stand: One can be both chronically psychotic and functioning; Mr. Magnotta may have looked calm but who knows what was going on in his head or, as she put it Thursday, “A murder may be premeditated, planned and deliberate, within a psychosis.”

Boy, she really tried to cover all the bases.

If 'only a psychosis' explains what Magnotta did, then 'only a psychosis' would explain what Homolka, Bernardo, and other horrible killers did, too. At least by her logic.
No, sometimes, people just do things simply to do them. I had two showers today, while I usually only have one. No real reason for the second. I just wanted one. Psychosis? I mean, it was a waste of water, soap, time. What else could explain it?

At a time when the College of Physicians and the Quebec Bar looks at the issue of expert witnesses, Dr. Marie-Frédérique Allard seems to have been widely sought by defense lawyers from across Quebec over the past years, always in support of the thesis of not criminally responsible.

Nice to know someone appears to be looking into what is going on. I hope they look at her first.

Disassociative Amnesia? You forgot you already took one? You are therefore NCR for taking a second one. ;)

A link that SHOULD take one to a translated (courtesy of Google Translate) version of this link. If it doesn't work, let me know and I will remove it.

YAY! Glad it works. It is an interesting read, even if the translation is slightly goofy.

The Crown suggested Magnotta painted the black screwdriver he used to repeatedly stab Lin silver, so that it would resemble the ice pick used by Sharon Stone’s character, Catherine Tramell, to murder one of her lovers.
magnotta-screwdriver.JPG

Nooo!! It wasn't even an icepick?? He PAINTED it in advance?!

Magnotta also told a psychiatrist who interviewed him about the night he killed Lin that "Manny" was there urging him to kill, another psychiatrist, Marie-Frédérique Allard, testified Thursday.

Thanks Fairy!!!
I have not watched the trailer or the murder video, are the screen shots you have posted from the trailer it the murder video?

No they aren't. He just completely recreated the scene.

(BTW: The trailers just show a still image of the pictures I posted that runs for nearly 2 minutes. Seems that he just took 2 photographs and turned them into videos on the 15th of May)

Bouthillier said the screwdriver Magnotta used to stab Lin was painted silver, just like in the Sharon Stone murder mystery.

Basic Instinct opens with a woman straddling a man, having sex with him and stabbing him to death with a silver ice pick. . . .

Magnotta told psychiatrists he took orders from Emmanuel Lopez, or "Manny," whose existence is uncertain.

Allard answered "I don't know" when Bouthillier asked the psychiatrist if she could name the husband of Stone's character in Basic Instinct.

"What if I told you his name is Manny Vasquez and we never see him?" the prosecutor said.

The jury also heard that personal photos of Lin, alive, were found in the trash bin of Magnotta’s computer after it was seized in Berlin.

Faced with repeated questions about whether Magnotta was faking his schizophrenia, Allard asked why he didn’t purposely show symptoms during a Montreal hospital visit one month before Lin’s slaying.

“Maybe he didn’t think he was going to be caught, doctor,” Bouthillier replied.

Just wanted to quickly thank all who have live tweeted, and the discussion following the tweets. :tyou:

A little off topic,but...American Psycho starring Christian Bale? How could that be Karla and Paul's favourite film??? He been locked up since 1993,the film wasn't released until 2000?!?

Sorry, it was the book that they both loved.

At the end of the week, evidence mounted that Luka Rocco Magnotta, accused media-labeled "Montreal Cannibal" of 33-year-old Lin Jun, patterned segments of what he allegedly did via cinema inspirations. The primary film he used was American Psycho.

This is not the first time this specific story has been used as the model for murder. In Canada, the novel on which the movie is based, American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, published in 1991, was highlighted during the trial of serial killer Paul Bernardo. It was discovered that Bernardo owned a copy of the book and had "read it as his 'bible'."

Bernardo committed the serial rapes and murders that were characterized as "The Scarborough Rapist" and "The Schoolgirl Killer" (see here). Magnotta, then named Eric Clinton Newman, was born in Scarborough, Ontario. A few news stories emerged in 2007 claiming that Magnotta was in a relationship with Karla Homolka, the high-profile Canadian murderer, partner-in-crime and wife of Bernardo. But Magnotta denied in a "creepy" interview with reporter Joe Warmington of Toronto Sun that he had ever even met her. During the 2012 "cannibal" murder investigation, Montreal police initially announced that the pair had dated, but subsequently retracted the statement and acknowledged that they had no new evidence to corroborate the claim. Can someone explain to me why LM, a known escort who had clients and got clients from escort websites for sex, would advertise on Craigslist looking for men who were into S&M? For free? He was looking for men to participate in S&M and bondage for "fun"? When he claims he was doing this in his profession? He obviously never really had sex with either of them because even though he claims he taped the sex, it was not there on the camera. For what reason would he do this? Other than to find a man online to murder for his "snuff film"?

Oh I know Dr. Allard. Do not try to apply logic to LM because he was in a psychosis. :banghead:

There has to be a reason why none of his internet history or recent sites visited before and after the murder is coming out at this trial. The Crown can't even suggest that there was or wasn't a record of him using Craigslist where he claims he met these men.

MOO

Well... regardless of "being in a state of psychosis" (GMAFB still...), LM had the foresight to use both Tor ( https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en ) AND a VPN service ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network ) while posting, especially in the latter timeframe of his activities online. That will have made it very, very difficult (but not necessarily impossible) for both LE and his defence team to follow/check up on his tracks online. Tor is free to use, and a good VPN service is cheap, costs around 5-10 USD per month. A fraction of what he made from just one client as an "escort". What has given LM away again and again is his choice of subjects and his endless hunger for fame. He HAD to make sure his "cult following" was fed, so even while behind what he thought to be a safe "wall" he HAD to make sure he was recognized. While staying "safe" and untraceable using these precautions. I have worked with IT since the early 80'ies, before the internet even came along (yeah.. I'm that old, lol). And trust me, just getting this whole thing set up and running to a degree where you are actually staying anonymous online to some degree (or thinking you are) is not an easy thing. It takes work, research and a sound state of mind. It is not something you do easily, and not something you CAN do if "confused"... having "lapses of memory"... being "psychotic". That just won't happen.

I am still of the firm conviction that LM has perhaps not faked his schizophrenia, but he has, and still is, embellishing and adding to it for his own gains, to an extent where he would be guaranteed an income from the disability program (and making sure that income would keep on rolling in even after moving to a different city), while also making drugs of various sorts available to him, which he could then either sell or use on unsuspecting victims. Many of the drugs he has been prescribed induce retrograde amnesia. What better way to do his thing (be it robbing victims or whatever) is there? Temazepam also induces retrograde amnesia, like almost all benzodiazepine based drugs. The lucky guy he performed his "dry run" on (MOO) is very, very lucky, and may not even have any recollection of what happened, who he met, where he was, or what they did together. He was still groggy when leaving... so he has to have been served more than just a few doses.

LM is cunning, devious, inventive. Convinced of his own genius, and still is. He has - IMOO - one goal, and one goal only.
Fame.
Regardless of the cost, to victims, taxpayers, whomever.
If ever I saw a cunning and self serving narcissist, he fits the bill better than anyone else.

MOO of course.

If the trailer has NOT been played for the jury an has not been brought up by the crown, could it be because it was excluded as evidence for whatever reason? Maybe there is not a way technically to link that in 100% fact it was LM that posted it, or something like that...,

Also, we still don't know who it was that LM was calling in the 705, right after he murdered JL... Wonder why the crown hasn't brought that up too... Excluded from evidence?

Hi LS:

In case you might have missed my post about the trailer.......I contacted a journalist who's inside the courtroom and the response was that the jury saw the trailer and the entire, unedited film.

Hey, it's very easy to miss stuff here. (I think we're all going a tad nuts!!) :)

I agree with Dane..................

Got to be pretty focused to use the software etc he used,i think one thing can say for sure is he was 'determined'!!

Because this information has not been either tweeted or reported on, we were thinking that the reporter mistook what you asked and considered the "trailer" to be the edited film? So they saw all unedited film and the final "edited" version. But we need clarification if they saw the 2 minute youtube video of just the picture of him in the purple hoodie, with the silver painted screwdriver/ice pick in front of the Casablanca poster. The one that was uploaded on May 15th I believe and was called 1 Lunatic, 1 Ice Pick. 10 days before the actual murder took place.

Do you think that reporter would be able to verify again? Or is this exactly what you asked? And was the date of that youtube trailer pointed out to them?

TIA
