Aaron Hernandez has hired a high-profile attorney to head up his new defense team in his double homicide trial and the appeal of his 2015 murder conviction.

Jose Baez, who represented Casey Anthony when she was acquitted of murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee, is heading the team, which will include Harvard Law professor Ronald S. Sullivan Jr. and Alex Spiro, who represented NBA player Thabo Sefolosha in his legal battle with New York police.

His previous team of attorneys, led by James Sultan, filed an appeal in that case last month. A 2015 application for an appeal had already been denied.

Sullivan is a clinical professor of law and the faculty director of the Criminal Justice Institute at Harvard, according to the university's website. Harvard says Sullivan helped design and implement a Conviction Review Unit for the Brooklyn District Attorney in 2014 and that it is "regarded as the model conviction integrity program in the nation," finding 10 wrongful convictions in its first year.

Contacted by phone Friday, Ortiz’s lawyer, John J. Connors, confirmed that the parties are discussing a possible plea deal, but he declined to say what Ortiz may plead to.

Hernandez’s fiance, Shayanna Jenkins, had her perjury case dismissed a month after she testified at Hernandez’s trial. In August 2015, prosecutors dropped an accessory charge against Tanya Singleton, Hernandez’s cousin, who was already on probation for refusing to testify before the grand jury in 2013.

Hernandez is still awaiting trial in Boston, where he faces two counts of murder in a fatal drive-by shooting in July 2012.

Was just thinking the same thing, how can he afford to pay these people? Jose Baez is probably doing it for publicity. With all the evidence against AH, not sure this new team will be able to help.

Oh good. That would be nice if he stood up and publicly, under oath, and told the judge all about the murder of Poor Odin Lloyd. I'd like to see Baez get out of that one, with all the surveillance cameras and the DNA on the gum, and the rental car....

She explained that prosecutors would have had to prove that Ortiz knew Hernandez killed Lloyd, and she asked him how he knew that.

"When we got to the spot, the only two people that got out of the car was Aaron Hernandez and Odin Lloyd," Ortiz told her. He said when he heard the gunshot, he turned around to look.

"The only one person that came in was Aaron Hernandez," he said.

So Baez will have to try and dispute that testimony. Bet he tries to pin it on Ortiz. But even if he does so, AH would still be guilty of murder, since he was driving and he was the boss of that crew. So I don't see Baez turning this sinking ship around. This ship is sinking, and on fire.
