many thanks
so in this case, for this suspect that has experience of burglary,
option 1, entering via the road/carparkside window, it certainly looks like a pretty secluded entry point. away from the road, behind a small [empty?] car park, last window in an alley that is not a thoroughfare, and the alley is slightly below ground level.
- he could first lift the shutter a little way to check if the bedroom was quiet, emtpy/free from adults. and also check if the window was unlocked, or could be opened via the lock being weak or faulty.
the state of the lock could be checked at any time prior to the break in. the current suspect was said to have planned the separate rape crime 'in detail'.
option 2, if entry via the window was not possible, would be to enter via the poolside/tapas side sliding door, especially if he had seen parent entering this way [21:05] or oldfield entering this way [21:30].
watching whether the sliding door was consistently left open could also have been observed during the week.

and burglar could then leave via either option.

parents eating at the same time/same place
30 minute gaps between checks
plus
no street cctv
no dna database
suspect had access to two getaway vehicles
suspect knows the area well

seems like there were plenty of obvious points of interest for a burglar.

Option 3. He entered through the front door. In Gerry's first statement he said it was locked but retracted that in a subsequent statement saying that as they left via the patio door, the front door was "probably" left unlocked.

Carola Titze aged 16 killed in 1996. Several days before her death she befriended a young German man at a disco. The German boasted about his brushes with the judicial authorities. Carola’s badly mutilated body was discovered in sand dunes.

Did Madeleine McCann suspect kill in Belgium?

HayLouise do you know if Carola Titze has a Websleuths thread? Also the young german girl called Inga? Thanks

Ok, so here's my theory. In his original statement Gerry said the front door was locked but retracted that later on stating that as they left via the patio it was probably left unlocked. Lets be honest, they would have known, if not before then afterwards but who wants to admit they did that especially when it looks at first glance like the window has been used as the entry point.

The intruder then entered via the front door. Whatever then transpired inside the apartment he makes a decision to take Maddie. How does he know it's now safe to leave with her without being seen? How about opening the window and sticking your head out to see if anyone is about before leaving via the front door again?

Because it probably links up with the witness sighting of two Dutch or German men on a balcony (two apartments?) along?

General warning as it will be a recurrent issue in this case.

Per Wikipedia, people are rarely given one family name in Portughese-speaking countries. Portuguese name - Wikipedia

Same as in Spanish-speaking countries per my experience.

So, unless person's first name is rare, we need to know all subject's last names before doing anything.
Or other more specific data.
Diogo is not a rare first name in Portughese-speaking countries.

Otherwise, we can easily get the wrong person, especially true when last name is as common as "Rossi" in Italy, "Smith" in UK or "Durand" in France.
Diogo Santos is a very common name in Portugal, Diogo is a common male name, has been for years. And Santos is one of the most common last names in Portugal. The linking of the phone numbers to this Diogo Santos probably means nothing. It's highly possible that these phone numbers haven't been used/connected for years and were assigned to someone else. That, or someone that is actually not portuguese and not called Diogo Santos, registered it under that name. Many foreigns that end up living in Portugal for long periods of time end up "changing" their names to something more portuguese sounding: John = João; Peter = Pedro; Mary = Maria; Elizabeth = Isabel. Actually, portuguese people that emigrate to the US and english-speaking countries change their names to something nome english sounding pretty often, specially when several generations of the same family are born and raised in those countries. Katy Perry's family is from Azores, the family's real name was the very portuguese Pereira and they ended up changing it to Perry. That Nickelodeon kid, JoJo Siwa, is most likely another product of that, the family's name was probably Silva at some point. So, I wouldn't really make a big deal out of this thing about the phone numbers. Actually, I don't understand why they released those phone numbers. All they had to do was contact the portuguese provider and they should have some information dating back to when he was using it.

The front door (next to the window) was unlocked as well as the sliding patio doors. The point about opening a door and not knowing what you are walking into is a valid point, which is why they may have opened the window first to check the coast was clear before going out of the door.
you don't have to open a window to see if the coast is clear though.

rbbm.
Guys, listen to your wives when they tell you they do not like the guy you brought home!

Living in an attic, "working' on the roof, CB seems comfortable with heights, if he did in fact hide any bodies, could it be on a rooftop somewhere, or in a chimney ? speculation, imo.
Saudi Aramco World : The Mystery of Algarve's Chimneys
''Cones, cubes, prisms, cylinders, pyramids, balloons; squat stumps, slender fingers, plain white or colorfully decorated: All these descriptions fit chimneys known as the chaminé Algarvia.
If there is one thing that characterizes Portugal's southern, sunny Algarve, it is ornamental chimneys. And if the chimneys have anything at all in common, it is that many bring to mind minarets, even miniature mosques.''

''Yesterday, it was revealed police are readying to dig up land around two Portuguese properties where Christian B lived.

One home, a farmhouse, is just 25 minutes' walk from the hotel where the three-year-old went missing 13 years ago.''

''Mr Bischof also said Christian B was "proud" to have worked out how to dry the cannabis in his roof before selling it.''

"My wife never liked him. When he entered the room, she would leave."

Also from The Mail, more detail on the apparent windfall following MM’s disappearance which was also reported by The Telegraph...

“It was conspicuous that he had boasted about a sudden financial windfall after he returned from Portugal in 2007. Friends remember him telling them that he had found cash in a pile of clothes, large sums of money, after breaking into a home in the Algarve.

'In addition to a mobile home, he also used the money to buy a derelict factory property in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.”

So that must mean a lot of money then...

This was reported in 2014, I imagine these children were not all left alone and there would have been adults on the premises, this is a person who is confident of not being caught.

"British police investigating Madeleine McCann's disappearance are now looking at 18 potentially linked break-ins by a lone intruder into Algarve villas."

Madeleine McCann: German authorities 'ignored tip-off about suspect in 2013'

German authorities reportedly ignored warnings from their own police seven years ago that suspect Christian B could have abducted and killed Madeleine McCann.

A report from detectives monitoring Christian B identified him as a key suspect in the Madeleine mystery, but it was ignored by Germany's Federal Criminal Office, according to news magazine Der Spiegel.

The 2013 police report was triggered after British detectives made a new appeal in the Madeleine case on a German Crimewatch-style TV show.

Scotland Yard had just launched its own investigation and was appealing to European tourists who might have been in Portugal when Madeline vanished from the family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in 2007.

The report was sent to federal police HQ by police in Braunschweig, who were monitoring Christian B's criminal behaviour. By that time he already had convictions for child sex abuse.

Der Spiegel writes: "One person did submit a tip about Christian B, but the resulting report from police in Braunschweig to the Federal Office of Criminal Investigation was apparently not acted upon, much to the consternation of the local investigators."

It comes as German police are said to be investigating the new Madeleine suspect for possible involvement in the disappearance of a boy in Portugal in 1996.

They are re-examining the disappearance of Rene Hasee, according to German media.

The then six-year-old from Elsdorf, Germany, went missing from a beach while on holiday with his family in the Portuguese Algarve.

It follows the launch of an investigation into whether the suspect was involved in the disappearance of another child - Inga Gehricke.

The five-year-old vanished during a family barbecue in the Saxony-Anhalt region on 2 May 2015.

She is thought to have wandered into a forest in search of firewood, and is known by German media as "the German Maddie".

Officers have named the suspect - a convicted child sex offender - only as Christian B and have not revealed his surname for legal reasons.

A Sky News investigation discovered last year that he was already being considered as a potential suspect for Inga's disappearance.

Is there a Websleuths thread for Rene Hasee?

leaving the car park side front door unlocked doesn't mean you can enter without the key. [as far as can see by looking at the actual door lock, it is a double lock]
leaving the door unlocked, does mean you can leave without a key though.

Through the years, the one piece of potential evidence that stuck with me was the Batchelor who came forward to say he saw, or was told of, Maddy at a “party.” He was scared and knew that by coming forward he was putting himself in a hard position. I always thought that was credible because the implication was that he was into something quite depraved himself.

I had forgotten this. Thanks for reminding us, no matter how gruesome the thought.

BTW do you happen to remember the nationality of the Batchelor?
