This is a good read. A reminder of the early assumptions and investigation. The article alleges a few things I didn't know, including:
*The McCanns were initially convinced their daughter was dead, until a trauma counsellor advised them to focus on taking action in the understanding there was no evidence to suggest so.
*In the absence of local cadaver dogs, local residents used household pets under the guidance of police with drug-sniffing dogs.
*Regarding the DNA samples found in the hire car, a forensic DNA specialist asserts that, although very rare, it is possible for sisters to have the same DNA profile.
*The media wasn't initially told about MBM's unique right eye, because of the risk of endangering her. But the McCanns agreed to do so because, as GM noted, her iris “is Madeleine’s only true distinctive feature." IMO, this suggests there isn't a birthmark or any other body feature that would conclusively identify her in an image, or that only a perp would know about. Her distinctive eye was all.
