@ 12.00 paper, he has a German ID issued on 12-12-2001. So expiry on 11-12-2006 is for ID and not a passport for sure.

But didn't they say he fled Germany in 1995 with a driving license?

I think he did. Maybe portugese police got that wrong and his license was granted in 2001 instead of an exceeding license in that year. Because, like i wrote, they did not exceed automaticly at that time.
