I think they'll be able to get quite a lot of information from it.
The direction it tore in will show how the plane may have landed or why it broke up
The algae levels and/or sun damage could show whether it's been submerged until recently or afloat the whole time
The type of barnacles may reveal which part of the ocean it's been in (depth / location maybe)
The current it came in on can be tracked back.
Etc etc. Of course none of this will yield definitive answers, but a combination of all the different results might just lead to a narrowed search parameter. And I still think more items are likely to wash up.
