In an airline briefing for families at a hotel, many expressed their anger over what they called inaction by the airline–and that anger extended to the Chinese government. One woman, who declined to give her name, shouted, “The Chinese government hasn’t even appeared.” One man threw a bottle at a Malaysian Airlines representative.

UPDATE [3.41pm]: Malaysia Airlines group CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said family members of MH370 passengers will be flown in to Kuala Lumpur from Beijing in stages and they are communicating with families in other countries to arrange travel to KL.

I think the 5 passengers may end up being in the normal figures for missed flights. One person on social media reassured his family and friends he had missed the flight. Mind you, it is odd their luggage was checked on.

Hi Derryn,

Thanks for the informative posts. My old boss flew a f-111 "sparkvark" in the first gulf war, he spoke highly of it.

Also, I had no idea there were SOSUS arrays anywhere other than the north Atlantic.

You're right, I aren't sure if they actually still call the newer listening network elsewhere SOSUS - but the Pacific has had this system for quite some time and with the escalating tensions in the SE Asia region, you can bet your left nut that a similar and most likely improved version of the system that is optimized for the geographical challenges the area presents with its makeup of hundreds of islands. :)

Was your old boss a EWO or Pilot in the EF? A friend of mine in the USA is currently restoring an ex-Gulf service EF-111A cockpit.

I agree - I think that 5 passengers missing a flight may not be unusual. The odd piece is that 5 passengers with checked luggage did not board. So they were at the airport. Doesn't make sense, considering the other circumstances of this flight - the fake passports, a missing plane.

You know, it's 4am - and I'm still here... I should be sleeping.

:eek:fftobed:

UPDATE [3.59pm]: A Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency plane has
spotted oil slicks about 20 nautical miles south of the MH370’s last point of contact.
Test are being conducted to determine if the oil had come from the plane.
Results are expected to be out tonight.

That's also in the same general area as the possible debris...

North Korea almost took down a passenger plane the other day shooting off missiles.

Yes true, that is definitely odd. There are also connecting flights though, with luggage checked all the way through -maybe they take them off if you miss your connecting flight

I don't think they remove luggage for missed connections. I've missed connections and the luggage always went straight through to the final destination.

So... about 3 1/2 hrs. That's 8:00am EST.

I wonder if they still had this system in place: http://www.nbcnews.com/id/27536251/...lines-allow-cell-phones-flights/#.UxweX9xozaM using mobile phones in flight was allowed. I imagine quite a few phones were switched on, I hope they are trying to track their location. There's a rumour on twitter that a Chinese family called their loved one's phone and heard the dial tone...

ETA Now BBC news Asia has tweeted about the reports of the Chinese family who called and got a ring tone

I, for one, am absolutely SHOCKED to hear that the Chinese gov't doesn't care about its citizens!
SHOCKED, I tell you!
