Prime Minister Tony Abbott has appointed former Defence chief Angus Houston to co-ordinate Australia’s search, which now involves ships and planes from seven nations after Malaysia finally joined the search.

“Should our responsibilities increase as time goes by, there is no one better placed than Angus to co-ordinate and liaise given the quite significant number of countries that have a stake in this search,” Mr Abbott said.

“This government won’t rest to give those families and the wider community of the world a little more peace and insight into exactly what happened,” he said.

Yes...

that remains in the back of my mind...

Has it ever been verified?

TIA...:seeya:

Not that I am aware of.
IIRC, it was a tweet from a Twitter account that is not considered MSM.
I think it was just a rumor...which is why it was never discussed a whole lot on here.

But who knows. Malaysia Airlines/Kuala Lumpur International Airport sure isn't going to come out and confirm or deny such reports!

The article quoted him as being pessimistic but it is totally realistic.

I agree.
IMO..a very poor Headline

untenable means not able to be maintained

of course they can not maintain the search for the plane and recorders as things stand at this time..,..they have to review and revise the search areas and try to narrow it down..

While Malaysia will formally still lead the investigation as required by international convention, the analysis of wreckage and the black box would take place in Australia.

The Malaysian government has yet to comment on the proposal. However, government and aviation officials in Kuala Lumpur agree the nation did not have the capacity to deal with an investigation of this magnitude.

''Really, we are out of our depth,'' said a senior Malaysian police officer involved in the investigation.

Further complicating matters is that even if debris of the plane is found, crew on Ocean Shield will then have to wait for oceanographers to complete the complex job of estimating where the plane actually crashed before the pinger locator can be usefully deployed.

Its point of impact will be hundreds of kilometres from where any debris floating on the surface of the Indian Ocean is found.

So the orange object was determined to be a jelly fish? This is going to be a long and tedious search.

The only orange jellyfish I know of are Lions Mane Jellyfish.
Does anyone know if they live in the Indian Ocean?

Captain Matthews, a director of ocean engineering with the US Navy, says it is critical the crash site is identified before the recorder can be located.

He was also involved in the search for an Air France jet which crashed into the Atlantic Ocean in 2009 and says in that instance, they had a good idea where the plane went down, but it still look a long time to locate the wreckage.

"The pingers were non-functional on that aircraft due to the damage it received when it hit the water," he said.

"It then took over two years conducting side scan sonar searchers with autonomous vehicles to locate the debris."

So ... is there any truth to this (badly translated) article in the China Times about the SOS call and talking about a forced landing?

http://www.chinatimes.com/realtimenews/20140308003502-260401

I haven't seen any other reports of this, so right now I'll take it with a grain of salt. But if this is what happened, it could explain the turn back shortly after the plane reached cruising altitude. It was turning around to make an emergency landing?

Of course, that still wouldn't explain why the plane continued in it's zig-zagging pattern across the various waypoints...

Oh...and Good Morning, all!
Quite disappointing to wake up and see no news.
Cannot imagine the torment of the families. So sad. :please:

Good mornin' to you and everyone!:seeya:

I can't imagine the families get much sleep. The emotional roller coaster they've been on is unimaginable. I know we tend to be more analytical at WS but it's hard not to get wrapped up in the emotional side of things, too.

BBM ~ That's a statement the Malaysian gov't should of used right from the get go, IMO.

:waitasec:

I have seen jelly fish..
Just HOW LARGE was this one?

Okay..maybe I believe it was a Box Jellyfish..they can grow to 3 meters (10ft) in length..

Box Jellyfish aren't orange though. They're transparent (or translucent).
Lions Mane Jellyfish are orange, but I am unsure if they live in the Indian Ocean.

I can't start accusing the pilot, not even in my mind. People break up every minute of every day, and suffer other disappointments and sorrows, yet no gets killed. Right now, I am disgusted with the "friend" who is feeding this to the news, especially to the DM. For what purpose? Because it is exciting to be a part of such a worldwide story? Who is he/she helping? Maybe later, if it is proven beyond doubt that the pilot was at fault, the time might come to reveal his personal problems...this is not the time. Jmo

IMO, during any investigation, it needs to be looked at from the inside-out.

It is kind of like is a woman is murdered, it's natural to look at husband, ex etc. (Just an example).

What I don't like is MA not saying anything "nice" about him? Or has he?

They have nothing on his FS; however, I read somewhere the deleted files were overwritten.

It is Malaysia's and surrounding countries fault to not report MH370 off it's flight path.

Elsewhere in the world, MH370 would have been found and not lost as it is now.

I just think it is too soon, since they appear to have ruled out nothing, to be printing articles that are demeaning, Imo, about the pilot or anyone else.
