Something else I have wondered about, If the flight data recorder will only have the last two (2) hours of communicating on it, (I'm guessing because it's on a 2 hour loop like a surveillance camera recording over it's self every 24 hours) does that mean if there was no conversation/communication that the last two hours of conversation would be there if it was not talked over. Hope this makes sense.

If there is no cockpit conversation that will be blank, but as I understand it, the plane data will be there. Please anyone correct if wrong. jmo

I know, it does seem sort of fantastical when you put it that way. Not to mention, the signals being 300 miles apart with both locations being right smack on top of the projected arc.
And then again, it's hard to imagine an enormous plane slipping into an ocean undetected. That's why I'd like to know how they've managed to get to this point.. did military actually detect plane activity or does it truly boil down to mathematical ingenuity.

I saw this map on Mary Schiavos twitter account - is this it?

Thanks
MH370 turned Westward but instead of continuing in that direction and flying over Indonesia then heading south..MH370 turned West, then went north-west around Indonesia before heading South....
I can see why some believe it was avoiding Indonesian radar...

So was the plane following Waypoints or not? or were the waypoints a guide to establish a map?

Is there a link to a map showing the latest, latest, latest version of the plane's route showing it fly north and and around Indonesia down to off shore Australia? I only got to see a second or two last night. Had company for the last four days. TIA

Never mind, I see somone read my mind and posted on while I was typing this. Oops, sorry.

I was thinking of that before I read your post. I sure hope all the pings that the ships have been hearing was not a submarine operating underneath them. Maybe something on a submarine was inadvertently making a sound that happened to be 1 second apart.

The thing that was worrisome is even yesterday when the northern ship heard the 2 hour noise and the 15 minute noise, they said the frequency was slighltly off on one of them.

I would have hoped if a submarine was nearby they would have radioed to Search Control that what they are hearing maybe them however if they were operating stealthfully then maybe they would never admit to being in the area.

This activity is good exercise for that sub, nuclear subs are good at being stealthy.

At this link there is an Image of three men standing around a hologram map that show the area in question. It helps you understand what they up against in those waters.
I have not watched the video.

I thought one box (data recorder?) maintained many more hours other than the other one...and while conversation might be lost by one, everything else should be stored on the other...?

Oh wow, don't know about that, but it would be wonderful. jmo

Here's the seabed map of the current search area of the pings - if I put a thumbnail hopefully it won't blow the margins.

There are 2 separate units...What you are mentioning is the Cockpit Voice Recorder..not the Flight Data Recorder

The Flight Data Recorder, it records 17 to 25 hours worth of data as opposed to the Cockpit Voice Recorder which records on a 2 hour continuous loop, it not only records cockpit voice but ambient sound on the aircraft..so there may be some useful information on the CVR

Yes,
the Flight Data Recorder records 17-25 hours worth of data in a continuous loop while the Cockpit Voice Recorder records 2 hours in a continuous loop..but the CVR also records ambient sound on the plane so there may be some useful information gathered from it, when found.

I moved some theory posts over to the thread: "What do you think happened to Malaysian Flight 370?" Please utilize this thread for any theories you may have so we can keep those posts together. Thanks

Does anyone know how many additional "laps" the Ocean Shield has done since the one where they heard the 15-min. pings?

Not sure on the laps, but they started a turn at 18:00 and completed it @ 21:37 and are now on a 204 degree course from a 24 deg course and almost to their halfway point in this leg.

Right. Its important to realize that even if nobody was talking on the cockpit voice recorder it still will provide the last 2 hours of whatever it recorded which is still helpful and will give clues.

They will be able to hear the plane crash into the ocean and listen to hear if the engines were just dying on their own or not. They will be able to hear if people were banging on the door to the cabin and stuff like that.

So even if nobody is talking it still gives clues.

The other device also provides many more hours of more technical telemetry type stuff about engines, speed, altitude, etc.

Thanks

I can see it too (avoiding radar).. as far as I know, the plane was following the waypoints.

Air Chief Marshal Houston said the prospects of finding anything on the surface were diminishing, especially after a cyclone passed through the search zone.

It is absolutely imperative to find something else. Hopefully when we put the autonomous vehicle down its capability is such that we will be able to find wreckage."

The ocean in the search area is some 4500 metres deep, which is the limit to which the autonomous underwater vehicle can go.

Looking forward to Commodore Leavy speaking tonight at the PC. I don't understand a word of what he says...but his accent is hypnotic.
