I can't bear to think of what so many of the loved ones are going through at this moment, hearing this news and knowing their relative was on the plane. I feel so, so sorry for them.

CNN's wording suggests that it wasn't a no-fly zone, but a 'troubled' area where you need to stick closely to route:

The route taken by the Malaysian flight is a very common one between Kuala Lumpur and the Netherlands, said CNN aviation safety consultant Mary Schiavo. She noted that the plane was flying over a troubled area and said close communication with air traffic controllers would be a key necessity.

Does anyone know yet if MH370 had a similar flight path?

Official: Malaysian plane shot down over Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — A Ukrainian official said a passenger plane carrying 295 people was shot down Thursday over a town in the east of the country, and Malaysian Airlines tweeted that it lost contact with one of its flights over Ukrainian airspace.
Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine's interior minister, said on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 meters (33,000 feet) when it was hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher. A similar launcher was seen by Associated Press journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday. The Buk missile system can fire missiles up to an altitude of 22,000 meters (72,000 feet).

JMO.....I don't believe this has anything to do with MH370.
It is just a horrible coincidence.

Per CNN....the Ukrainian's are saying it wasn't them. So it was either separatists or Russia.

CBS news said this was the same path as yesterday's flight.A missle launcher was seen by the associated press early Thurs. near the east Ukrainian town of Shnizik( sorry about the spelling)

I'm hearing the Russians. This is the kind of stuff that starts world wars. And I really hope the US can stay out of it.

Also, poor Malaysia. They are really having a time of it.

Agree 100% all around.

Just heard about it on the radio. All those poor people :(

One thing is to issue such a command, the other actually acting on it. Ofc I know, even if one refuses to follow an order, there will be someone else executing it, but still .....

Does anyone know if the list of passengers has already been published?

You do seem to be overlooking the fact that this is a war zone, and at least two Ukrainian aircraft have been shot down in the area in the past week. It may well have been intentional in terms of shooting down the plane that was flying overhead, but without awareness that it was a civilian plane.

As far as a no-fly - I understand there's been a warning issued but looking at flight tracker websites, even now there are several flights crisscrossing the country. Most could well think they were safe at cruising altitude - but if this is a Russia-made Buk it would just about have the reach.

From what I understand, earlier in the week (or maybe last week), an Ukrainian cargo jet was shot down by a missle that originated from Russia, but that was a military event. This is a HUGE difference, but could have been done with some of the SAMs I've read about.

The airline was flying at a normal altitude for commercial flights - from what I understand (I could be wrong). From flights I've been on, it seems that airspace is kind of like a multilevel highway - north has altitude X, south has Y, east has 1, west has 2...and those routes are designated between a specific altitude (30K-34K feet, eg). So, apparently this was a normal route, at a normal altitude...but someone shot down a commercial flight.

Yes, Gitana, this is the kind of thing which starts world wars. I don't believe this will, because Malaysia does not have the resources to go after those who did this...had it been an American jet, it would be a different story. But Malaysia? I don't think they really can do anything militarily to them.

This whole thing sucks.

Rest in peace, travelers...and my prayers are with you and your families left behind.

Best-
Herding Cats

Snip:

The Boeing 777 was on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, when it failed to confirm its entry into Russian airspace on schedule at 5:20 p.m. Moscow time, the Interfax news agency said.

The plane “disappeared from radar at 10,000 meters [33,000 feet] and then crashed near the city of Shakhtarsk in Ukraine's Donetsk region, a source in the Ukrainian law enforcement authorities said,” Interfax-Ukraine reported.

The plane began losing altitude about 35 miles before entering Russian airspace and “fell down,” minutes later, setting off its emergency beacon, the news agency said.

It failed to confirm its entry into Russian airspace? This is not sounding like "separatists" I'm afraid.

Well ? What do we think? Does today's news give us any standing hair on the back of our necks about what happened to 370 ?

You can pretty much guarantee it is a no fly zone now.
