The train station where the bodies are being kept in refridgerated carriages is under heavy fire. Ukraine attempting to take it back under control. It's doubtful if International Contingents will be able to enter the zone. The Airport is held by the rebels.

OMG !!! Just when we were getting somewhat hopeful (well, I was). Are we backing this action to gain control of the train and crash site? Timing seems incredibly suspect.

"A spokesman for Ukraine's military operations in eastern Ukraine said the operation was in an "active phase" but could not comment on reports of troops entering Donetsk because he did not want to give away the Ukrainian strategy."

I don't know why they're doing it SouthAussie. It's possible the Ukrainians are trying to help us by taking control. Some teams are waiting in Kiev ready to go.

We don't know what the plan was for the bodies, I doubt it was to just let them decompose somewhere else. From the articles I read yesterday, it sounded like there was a plan to move the bodies to large morgues so that all the bodies could be tended to in one region/area.

Perhaps the fact that specific locations have not been given, it seemed like the last oppportunity to get posession of the bodies before they were removed, in case they were never returned.

I've been sitting listening this morning to reports of Putin's warnings about not making this tragedy a 'politcal' issue.

I prefer Australian PM's statement that it's 'more like a garden clean up' than a forensic investigation.

This site is gathering loads of latest news reports, and even weather too.

According to the article, Dutch investigators and the train with bodies is at Torez station while the fighting is around Donetsk station. I don't see how this helps anyone. Won't it just drive investigators further away? The whole situation is insane. A train full of corpses that fell from the sky, stuck in limbo in a war zone, and Ukraine starts shelling and killing ordinary citizens. Dropping bombs on a school. It's beyond macabre.

Just announced BBC - Dutch investigators say they will be allowed to remove the train today.

Britain calls for further sanctions if Russia doesn't help.

And hearing heavy gunfire around the train station, reporter says 'rebels VERY nervous' as it draws closer, and man screaming at people to get away.......:(

IMO, if train not removed soon, very real possibility it may be hit by weapon fire. Poss reporters, investigators killed.

Dutch investigator just said: 'Enough is enough'.

Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has made a statement on Facebook.

He said: "Ukraine is ready to transfer to the Dutch side the co-ordinating role in investigating the MH17 crash. The Government is ready to transport the bodies of the victims for forensic examination to Amsterdam, which has one of the most advanced forensic laboratories in the world.

I am guessing - while the town is full of media and international observors, and Russian backed rebels have either left (or are constrained in what they do, and calling for back-up) Ukraine Govt military is using the opportunity to re-take the town.

So it seems that both sides are willing to use the bodies of victims, and their tragedy, for their own ends.

He needs to order his military to cease fire first. A train can't drive through that battlefield - it was unbelievable, hearing it just now on the radio.

My guess is that we (as in, the western powers that be) may have known that this was going to happen.

"Abbott said an Australian investigation team was in Kiev but had been unable to travel to the site. He said there had been some improvement with the Ukrainian government offering access."

“But there’s still a hell of a long way to go before anyone could be satisfied with the way that site is being treated,” Abbott said. “It’s more like a garden clean-up than a forensic investigation. This is completely unacceptable.”

'Each of the train wagons carrying the corpses was opened and examined by two men wearing masks and headlights.

"I think the storage of the bodies is (of) good quality," Peter Van Vliet, the forensic expert leading the Dutch team, said after examining the corpses.

The expert, speaking as 50 armed insurgents looked on, said his team would head to the main crash site about 15km away.'
