"DISTRAUGHT Australian relatives of Malaysia Airlines MH17 victims have been asked to provide intimate information about their smallest loved ones, at a time when their grief is most raw.

Because many of the victims on the doomed July 17 flight were children, police and health workers visiting relatives around the world have asked for treasured children’s finger paintings or other items that may contain prints such as baby bottles.

Footprints of the children, taken from the children’s rooms or bathrooms, may have also been taken.

If identification is still a problem in the coming weeks, officials may be forced to request neonatal blood samples that may have been preserved from birth."

A horrible thought , but this is exactly why every parent should have their own DNA kit stored locked away.
:(
Secure and store Fingerprints. Fingerprints can be recorded on a standard fingerprint card with ink by a certified fingerprint techinician for the most reliable results.

Secure and store a Scent Article. Have your child remove a piece of clothing that he or she has been wearing all day (a sock provides an excellent sample) and have the*child*place it in an envelope.*Do not*allow anyone but the child who wore the article of clothing to touch it or the envelope. Store the envelope in a safe deposit box or temperature controlled container. Scent Article stored in this manner should last indefinitely.

Secure and store a DNA sample. (1) Blood Drops can be collected using sterile cotton or wait until your child gets a cut or scrape. Collect the blood sample on a band-aid. Completely dry before storing; (2) Baby teeth; or (3) Hair with root. Wrap each sample separately in dry paper. Place sample in separate paper envelope (never use plastic). The envelope should be sealed with tape covering each seam. Place initials of collector and sample date on the envelope touching both the tape and the envelope using permanent ink. Each envelope should clearly indicate the child’s name, the name of the person who collected the sample, and the date the sample was collected.

Store in a safe deposit box or temperature controlled container. DNA samples stored in this manner should last indefinitely.

'The downing of the Malaysia Airlines jet in eastern Ukraine may constitute a "war crime," the UN's Navi Pillay says.

Pro-Russia Ukrainian rebels and the Ukrainian authorities have accused each other of shooting down flight MH17.

A Ukrainian official said on Monday that MH17's data recorders show it came down due to "massive explosive decompression" caused by a rocket.

Meanwhile, heavy fighting has again prevented an international police force from reaching the crash site.'

Yes, I think that the Ukraine army actions are part of the big picture here, in granting the investigators a (relatively) safe site to carry out their work .. as well as achieving some personal goals of their own, of course.

"Asked if he was "comfortable" with sending his officers into the area unarmed, the (Australian Federal Police) deputy commissioner said the mission was new territory for the AFP.

"Comfortable is a broad word, no we can't be comfortable but we have ... dealt with the risks to a point where we wouldn't send our people into a situation where we didn't think they would be safe," he said."

Oddly, the spokesman for Ukraine's security council is saying data retrieved from the blackboxes has revealed the plane was shot down by a missile. But I would have thought the UK teams who are examining them would have handed over the results to the Dutch first, as they are in charge of the investigation?

Not to worry, the Dutch do have the results of the black boxes. i assume they are already on to 'whose missile'.....

I copie my own post from the previous page:

Now investigators have so far been forced to limit their task to the inventory of the flight data, radar and satellite images, air traffic control conversations and content of the black boxes. ' With that information we are getting far', says Van der Weegen. ' This means that we can search for specific additional information once we can move freely on the crash site. A sweep over the entire area with debris will no longer be necessary. '

Mr Colvin (AFP commissioner) said Australians need to be prepared for the possibility of some victims remains being left behind due to the "trauma" to bodies sustained from the plane being shot down and the "added complications" of being denied early access to the site.

"We have to prepare ourselves for the possibility that not all remains will ultimately be recovered," he said.

Team turns back from Ukraine crash site

July 28, 2014 10:25PM

DUTCH and Australian forensic investigators on their way to the MH17 crash site have turned back, after "explosions" in the area, a government spokeswoman in The Hague said.

"THEY have returned in the direction of Donetsk," justice ministry spokeswoman Sentina van der Meer said.
"Explosions were heard, and they were warned by the locals."
The international police team has failed to reach the crash site for the second day running as clashes rage in a town on the road to the area.

AFP abandon bid to reach MH17 crash site after driving into 'battle zone'

Updated 6 minutes ago

A convoy of unarmed police officers has again abandoned attempts to reach the crash site of Malaysia Airlines MH17 amid fierce fighting in the area in eastern Ukraine.

ABC correspondent Stephen McDonell says the Australian and Dutch inspectors drove right into an "active battle zone" as they headed for the site.

"Artillery and rocket fire could be heard 15 kilometres from the crash site," he said.

A Ukrainian military statement said troops "had entered into" two towns near the crash site, and "battles were continuing for the complete liberation" of two other towns

"My French passport is an advantage"

Translation:

(...)

Once the observers arrived, the rebels became very strict, and you would not be allowed on the field, but when I went there early in the morning I was really all alone. There was absolutely no one in the entire area and I could go shooting what I wanted. But it remains a dangerous area. Yesterday another plane of the Ukrainian army crashed . When journalists and photographers travellecd to the location, their car was fired upon by the rebels. Deciding on your own where you are going is not advisable. However, the media have not been received badly in general, but it depends also what assport you have. I have a French passport and in this case that is to my advantage. I've experienced that a journalist arrived at a checkpoint with a British passport. He was orderded to make the u-turn immediately. But more often all depends on the permission from the random rebel. If he is too drunk, or if he has a bad temper, then nothing can be done. "

About the Monkey-Man:

An iconic image is that of the rebel leader who holds up a bear as a trophy. The picture has caused a lot of outrage. There are always people who suspect that photographers created this scene for a catchy image.
"No, that I would never do! I was there with many journalists, photographers and videographers. The same photo has been made from other angles. The man walked to the personal stuff on the ground and began an anti-Kiev speech, in which he held up the teddy bear. The presence of the media has influenced his attitude. If we had not been there, of course, he would not have done that. This man was the Commander of the separatists who have secured the disaster area during the first few days. He was often drunk and unpredictable. He stopped the OSCE Mission against all agreements and even once fired in the air. After a few days I have no longer seen him. He was replaced by another unit. "

Vladimir Antyufeyev says Alexander Borodai has left Donetsk for Russia. It's not clear if he is going back

Joining Borodai and rebel commander Igor Strelkov [at the beginning of July], Antyufeyev's arrival underlines a change at the top of the separatist movement, highlighting Moscow's involvement in the conflict, Western officials say. The Kremlin denies any involvement.
"There has been a dramatic change in the leadership of the Donetsk People's Republic over the past weeks, which certainly gives the impression of a much more hands-on Russian directive role," said Geoffrey Pyatt, the U.S. Ambassador to Kiev. "These individuals are in regular touch with authorities in Russia."

Ukrainian-born rebel leaders have been eased out, causing rifts among increasingly nervous separatists since a Malaysian airliner was downed over rebel-held territory just over a week ago.

(...)

Antyufeyev, also known as Vadim Shevtsov, has a history of supporting pro-Russian separatist movements in the former Soviet Union, and brings a tough discipline and doggedness to the campaign in eastern Ukraine.

The balding, 63-year-old says he "fought national fascism" by supporting separatists in the pro-Russian region of Transdniestria in neighboring Moldova, and in the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in Georgia.

(...)

The EU first blacklisted Antyufeyev over his role in Transdniestria in 2004. Though it later suspended that decision, it has now blacklisted him again over Ukraine, imposing assets freezes and a travel ban on him.
