Photo #2 http://www.sdsheriff.net/coronado/images/ms03.jpg

Click on the link to photo #2 and zoom in on the landing between the two sets of stairs. Focus on the carpet between the small rug and the lower set of stairs.

1. What is that impression in the carpet on the landing?

2. Why is that small rectangular rug on that landing? Is it covering something? [Strange and potentially dangerous place for a small rug – tripping hazard.]

MOO & TIA

The impression in the carpet in photo #2 looks to me like a flower or some other design that is embossed (?) in the carpet, like the border is.

I agree that throw rug is in a dangerous place!

Also interesting is the plant that shows through the bannister. I imagined the stairwell was empty when Max fell, but that plant must be sitting on a table of some kind. Did Max also hit a table when he fell?

Hi Quester, It looks like a design pattern in the rug it's self. The Phoenix Bird, maybe?

That's an odd place for that throw rug though. Is it covering something, like the paint on the door was?

There apparently was a potted plant.

Hi Quester, lol I asked the same thing you did about the rug because I didn't read your entire post before answering about the imprint. Sorry. But we do think alike, eh?

After looking at the stair photos, I realize that the handrail is quite wide. It makes me suspect MS tried to walk down 2nd floor upper railing (this would make him standing taller than chandelier fixture), fell forward, cought hold of chandelier, swung towards lower flight of stairs, couldn't hold on and fell down - ultimately, hitting the floor face foward.

I still think he was copying teen activity or a movie. Tragic accident.

At the sheriff's site there's a picture with a table and plant in the spot where Max landed but that is a picture from sometime in the past.

As to your question about Max hitting a table, it's not mentioned in the police report. They said only the scooter, balls and the chandelier where next to him.

Bolded by me. Did I miss something? The only paint I'm aware of on the door is the writing of the cryptic message ("she saved him..."). Was there other paint, and if so, what was it hiding?

RE: carpet - As you both have suggested, it does look like a design debossed (?) in the carpet. Thanks!

RE: small rug - That rug is very confusing. Did LE cut out a square of the carpet with some evidence on it and the rug is covering the void?

Looking at the mansion floor plan linked below, IF on the evening of 7/12 RZ slept in the master bedroom, a direct route to the guest bedroom with the balcony is to the grand staircase, down the upper set of stairs to the landing, then pass through the door visible on the landing. [That is of course if I'm reading the floor plan correctly.]

That door off the grand staircase landing seems to be the only access to that 2nd floor, two bedroom, one balcony, one bath wing of the house.

Great catch, Quester! I agree, the small rug definitely would be a hazard. It looks out of place, what's the purpose of having it there?

The impression? If it's what I think you are looking at, isn't that part of the pattern of the carpet? In addition, you can see where the step and below the step is dirty, where it's more traveled.

Wouldn't there be marks on the banister if he was trying to walk it?

Umm...OMG! I always thought the railing was at the END of a hallway - it's not! - the railing is actually paralell with the hallway!

how far is that other railing? For Max to hit it (or bounce off it) like the LE says?

If the witness had made the call immediately, I think LE would have taken her seriously. Making a call so long after a death, I can understand why LE wouldn't find the witness credible.

JMO

Then why does LE go around and talk to neighbors to see if somebody saw or heard anything?

I don't think that is embossed into the carpet. The positioning is off for that and the pattern doesn't make sense. Those odd curved parts remind me of the chandelier.

ETA1: There is not a corresponding impression on the other side of the landing. I would think if it were intentional there would be a balancing, symmetrical pattern on the other side. IMO.

ETA2: I believe that is from the chandelier. Sorry to muddy the waters in this fashion, but I gotta say it. The big looping pattern that looks like flower petals? Those are from the strings of crystal hanging from the bottom of the chandelier. When set flat on a surface that is the shape those strings would make. And the more strongly indented parts in the middle are where the body of the chandelier was sitting. ETA 4: IMO.

But it is close enough. That lamp weighs 80 pounds. It took some weight to make those marks in that thick, plush carpet. And the area rug overlaps it. FWIW, it was mentioned in the PC that Ocean was sitting on that landing when LE arrived...

Those two rooms can be accessed through that door on the landing or from a staircase from the butlers pantry off the kitchen.

ETA 3: Excellent observation Quester!! :woohoo:

 I just thought of something.....when did LE take the chandelier into evidence?? Didn't they take it out of the trash????? What day was that?????

BBM - The impression in the carpet on the landing being from the chandelier was my initial thought. IMO. Thanks for your observations!

So, if the landing carpet impression was from the chandelier, does that imply that when the chandelier chain broke free the chandelier then fell onto the landing and not on the floor at the base of the staircase?

If so, that would suggest a chandelier swinging motion not supported by LE's stick diagram of MS' fall. IMO.

Thanks also for the clarification of access points to that part of the home.

MOO & TIA

ETA: And, that small rug on the landing could be covering a spot where LE cut out a square of carpet where there was blood from someone else at the time of MS' fall and/or from someone later cleaning up the chandelier mess and/or ??? . IMO.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing until I realized that the chandelier was still there, in the trash I assume, the night Rebecca died.........puts a little different twist on things doesn't it? I'm thinking about all the linear abrasions and contusions on Rebecca's back and legs......that landing would be a logical place to stand if you wanted to "talk about" Max's accident. Good place to view all the points, then exit stage right to the door to the guest bedroom.

ETA: From SW 41290, receipt and inventory:
collected July 15, 2011, 11:10 pm
chandelier - found in trash area
pieces of chandelier
black t-shirt (cut)
wire nut
chandelier chain & electrical wire
scooter/razor
scraped paint sample
wilson soccer ball

Why decide to do this two days later at 11 o'clock at night?
