Card, who has been enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve since December 2002, and was most recently a petroleum supply specialist who had no combat deployments, a spokesperson for the force said.

He was reportedly a trained firearms instructor and, according to Clifford Steeves, who served alongside Card in the early 2000s, was one of the best shooters in their unit.

It cannot be a coincidence that he started hearing things when he got these high powered hearing aids and several of the victims were part of the deaf community. They had to be known to the shooter, right? Too big of a coincidence that he just happened to recently need hearing aids and ended up shooting a group of deaf people.

iirc, it was one of his family who tried to link his behavior to hearing aids and it made no sense to me. My husband has hearing aids but he doesn't "hear" weird voices nor is he mentally unstable.

Again I ask … what kind of boat did he own, where was it docked or stored, is it missing, and why are they not publishing photos of his or a similar boat for the public to look out for?

Possibly because they don’t want a ton of other boats around. I imagine that those who boat regularly know the specifics. JMO.

Regardless of if the hearing aids had anything to do with him hearing voices, or if he was hearing voices at all…. I find it highly unlikely that he recently experienced significant hearing loss, got new fancy hearing aids, AND just so happened to shoot people from the deaf community. My money is on he knew those men.

The man is mentally ill, he frequented the bar where these deaf cornhole players were every Wed. night. He was having hearing issues or he wouldn't have need hearing aids, if his hearing was bad enough for "high powered" aids he may not have heard background noises for a while so with aids he could have interpreted that noise as voices. Does that make sense?

I feel like this interview was totally irresponsible. Did they vet this neighbor? His statements are so inconsistent with the sister's statement. Sure, you'd expect the family to have a different point of view but something about this interview just felt off to me. Anyone else have that reaction?

This interview is horrible IMO. The neighbor comes off (to me) as being more anti-gun than anti-Card family for specific reasons. Totally his right to be against guns... just felt like that was his main point of contention in the interview. MOO

The deer hunting thing is normal; maybe not to be "covered in blood", but to have the deer strung up for skinning/processing and to be chatting/"celebrating" with friends... not out of the norm. I see it almost every weekend down here in the south.

AND THE INFANT COMMENT?! Wildly irresponsible for him to say, and even moreso for NBC to air. That solidified my opinion of the neighbor being an opportunist/attention seeker and not a very legitimate source.

What exactly are "high-powered" hearing aids? I wear hearing aids and I've never heard of that.

I've wondered the same thing. My husband's hearing aids were expensive, but the audiologist adjusted them to fit his hearing needs.

My heart is hurting for Maine tonight. I went to boarding school not far from this and found out today that they were on lockdown since this happened. I can't imagine that happening when I went there in the 80's. The school I went to was the best thing that ever happened to me and the good people of Maine helped form me into the man I am today. I'm so very sorry for all the people who were directly affected by this as well as others. Such a waste.

I haven't been back to Maine in almost 40 years but I can say in great confidence that there are so many places this guy could be hiding out. One of the places I would check are all the empty Summer Camps in that region. There are a ton of cabins on those camps for the scores of kids that attend these camps and stay there for their vacation. They are all boarded up after the Summer season. They are all empty and perfect for hiding out for a long period of time if you are looking to just survive. Breaking in wouldn't be that difficult. No one is really checking those places in the Winter time. Someone might stop by every week or 4 just to take a quick glance but they aren't checked daily. The woods alone up there could provide isolation and cover for years.

The media has picked this up as well (see links below); but to be honest I think RC maybe had a burning rage about something someone said/did, or was an injustice collector ?
Not so much his hearing devices.

Robert Card, 40, a firearms instructor and longtime member of the Army Reserve, began to hear voices that were saying “horrible” things about him a couple of months ago when he was fitted for high-powered hearing aids, according to Katie Card, who is married to his brother.

Katie Card said the family did their best to reassure Robert Card that the comments were not real, including by verifying with some of the people he claimed had made the remarks. But, she said, “it turned into a manic belief.”

“He was just very set in his belief that everyone was against him all of a sudden,” she said.

Just as it’s only my personal opinion that he likely knew the deaf men who were victims. Maybe not. I’m quite literally just reading the posted articles and forming my own opinions given the info I’m reading. Is it possible he knew them? Of course it is. Is it possible they were complete strangers and it’s a coincidence? Absolutely. We don’t know one way or the other. I think it would be a really, really strange coincidence.

With the note being reported as 'suicidal' in nature and his missing boat...I wonder if he went to the water and drowned himself by weighing himself down. I hope not since the body may never be found and the victims' families and the survivors will never know for sure that he can't return and hurt them or anybody else ever again.

IF RC did this-- and from the video evidence and actions of LE -- I think they have their man in their sights, if not in person -I get it that the Card family is in their worst nightmare.

Actually the worst nightmare is if someone who is loved is murdered.
Even if RC is arrested, tried & convicted -- his family can still see, talk to, and visit him.
The other families who have lost loved ones will never receive that privilege, sadly.

No one is saying the hearing aids caused it. That is just when his current problems started. The feedback or unaccustomed sounds may have aggravated a mental illness. If he has schizophrenia, he may have interpreted the feedback as voices.
