Millard's land deal bombshell

Real estate transfer ‘beyond smelly,' an expert says: Have provincial laws been broken?

Toronto Star

Jennifer Pagliaro

In the days following his arrest for the alleged murder of Tim Bosma, Dellen Millard transferred ownership of three residential properties to his mother … for $1.

The conspicuously-timed real estate dump raises concerns about Millard's intentions, according to eight legal experts specializing in real estate, tax and estates who reviewed the documents at the request of the Toronto Star.

Those experts agree the timing of the transfers is "highly unusual" and poses serious legal questions.

Toronto Police homicide squad news conference on Dellen Millard-related investigations into Laura Babcock and Wayne Millard.

By Susan Clairmont

TORONTO It seems odd that in the first and only news conference Toronto Police has held since it began investigating two possible murders related to Dellen Millard, no mention at all is made of the Hamilton Police Service.

Waterloo Regional Police is mentioned. So is the OPP.

Yet, Detective Mike Carbone of Toronto's homicide squad never says a word about Hamilton. Even though Hamilton arrested Millard for the first-degree murder of Tim Bosma. And it was that arrest that led Toronto to take a better, harder look at two of their own cases: one which had gone dormant, the other which they'd closed.

Tim Bosma murder: Man says test drive with suspects was ‘not normal’

When two men arrived on foot to test drive his Dodge Ram 2500 pickup in Etobicoke on May 5 in the middle of the day, the man said they asked lots of questions about the 2010 truck, which was listed for about $35,000.
“There was bunch of questions about the car,” he said, including about its 6.7-litre diesel Cummins engine.

Brand new, the value of the engine is $21,000, said Peel Chrysler sales associate James Philpott.
“It’s one of the best diesel engines in the world,” he said. “These types of engines, they’re big bucks.”

A red 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 is registered to Millard Holdings Ltd. — a company Millard inherited — but it doesn’t have the Cummins engine upgrade.

“As an investigator, you always talk about tunnel vision and I think it’d be tunnel vision for me to say that I definitely believe there’s a third person or to say there wasn’t,” Staff Sergeant Matt Kavanagh said Wednesday. “It’s possible that there’s only two involved and it’s also possible that there may have been a third. And so we’re looking into that and we still have some doors to shut, some avenues of investigation.”

By Robert Cribb

On the morning news broke about the mysterious disappearance of Tim Bosma, Deepak Paradkar whispered a silent prayer.

"I prayed for his family and that he would be found safely," recalls the Christian son of a Presbyterian minister, who says he felt deep remorse for the missing father and husband he'd never met.

<modsnip>

"I never take a case without thinking I can win it," the 50-year-old lawyer says. "As a Christian, I'm very sympathetic to the family for what has happened. But the rights of the accused have to be protected as well."

He calls it a "paradox."

Chilling new details in the mysterious Tim Bosma homicide

When the man placed an order for a portable livestock incinerator last summer, he asked all the usual questions about the device’s size and fuel source. Soon after, the unit was shipped for about $15,000.

Mr. Millard attended the prestigious Toronto French School but left after Grade 10. He studied 3D games animation at Humber College in 2002 but was once “caught red-handed” plagiarizing the work of his classmates, according to a source at the college.

Clairmont: So close — yet so far from answers in Bosma case
Bosma suspects appear in court on TV as questions about fingerprints arise

Leitch told the court that at some point, police need Millard to make an in-person appearance at the courthouse so he can be fingerprinted.

<snip>

Normally, fingerprints are done at the time of arrest.

Outside court, Leitch explained that while Millard's prints were taken when he was initially arrested and charged with forcible confinement and theft over $5,000, they were not taken again when the first-degree murder charge was laid a few days later.

The concern is that if the lesser charges were to be dropped — although Leitch says he has no intention of doing that — Millard's fingerprints would no longer be on file.

Sharlene Bosma aims to help families of homicide
By Molly Hayes
August 1, 2013

For 10 weeks after her husband was senselessly murdered, Sharlene Bosma had to keep making truck payments.
While she waited more than a month for his official death certificate, she had to keep up the payments on Tim Bosma's 2007 Dodge Ram pickup...

Now, on the eve of the second court appearance of both accused, Sharlene says she doesn't want any other families in her situation to have to worry about things like truck payments.
She has started a fund, Tim's Tribute, to provide financial assistance and support to the families of innocent victims of homicide, both in the immediate aftermath of such tragedies as well as during the trial.
