"Seeing someone I worked with come through the door in the jump suit, with the handcuffs on, it hurts. It really does," said freelance photojournalist, George Wise, who's been covering the case for the Associated Press and others. "I was just shocked. I was just like, 'this cannot be Chris Coleman. There's no way. This is not the Chris Coleman I know'."

Wise has been covering St. Louis for close to 20 years. For close to 3, he worked as a TV-video specialist for the Joyce Meyer Ministries alongside Chris Coleman and Coleman's wife Sheri, 31.

Coleman's jailed with no bond on three counts of first degree murder for the strangulation deaths of his wife and two sons, Garett, 11, and Gavin, 9.

"I wanted to reach out and say something to him. I think he knew I was there," Wise said of the scene at the police station.

Records released in Coleman case

COLUMBIA, Ill. — When he applied to become Joyce Meyer Ministries' security manager in 2000, Chris Coleman said he was a well-trained security operative commissioned to protect presidents, according to ministry records.

The records show that Coleman, accused of killing his wife and two young sons in Columbia, wrote in his application that he was a former Marine and had "numerous top-secret government clearances."

Newly Released Documents Tell Us More About Accused Murderer Coleman

Personnel records show he was on the road one-third of the time and that he'd met his Florida mistress in Houston, Texas and Hawaii. Carey will be requesting more Ministry records to determine when the church found this out.

"We have documentation that they were aware at a certain point in time of Christopher Coleman's relationship with a woman in Tampa, when he was married to Sheri. What did Joyce Meyer's Ministry know, when did they know it, what did they do about it," says Carey.

Carey said he's not yet seen any evidence that Coleman's mistress flew with Coleman on a ministry jet. He also says that he's only found a life insurance policy Coleman took out on himself, nothing showing he took one out on his wife before the murders. .topix_commentLink { font-weight: bold; margin: 0px; }

The deaths of Gavin, Garett and Sheri Coleman almost three months ago still cast a sad aura around Columbia.

Beloved members of the community, the Colemans have had their share of community support since then.

Keeping with the trend, the organization Bikers Save Lives-along with Top Shooter's and sheriannherboys.com-is hosting a Coleman memorial fund benefit ride Aug. 8 in hopes of raising enough money to build the Colemans a memorial at Blue Jay football field in Columbia.

The ride will start with registration at 11 a.m. at the football field, which is right next to Parkview Elementary School. All those with a vehicle, whether motorcycle or a car, will then take a 100-mile odyssey around the area before returning to Top Shooter's at around 6 p.m. From then, there will be live music, raffles and attendance prizes until 10:30 p.m.

Tom Harvell, whose dad Dennis started Bikers Save Lives five years ago, said this is the 5th annual benefit ride for the organization.

"Every year we try to do something to help, whether that be a fund-raiser for hospital treatments or donating to the USO," Harvell said.

Other organizers include Tim Wheeler with Top Shooter's and Meegan Turnbeaugh, who runs the website sheriannherboys.com.

These three said they are hoping a good turnout will translate into a lifetime remembrance, as each vehicle in the ride will offer up a $10 donation.

"We want everyone and anyone to come on down," Harvell said.

Helping this out will be a ceremony at 11 a.m. before the ride begins.

"We will be retiring Gavin and Garett's jerseys," Harvell said of the boys who played for the Blue Jay football team.

There will also be an inflatable bounce house on the premises for kids to enjoy.

For those who can't make it, additional donations can be made through sheriannherboys.com, where they can also view pictures and see memories people have posted.

I saw on channel 5 KSDK at 5:00 where JMM released some papers concerning Chris Coleman's employment record. There was also supposed to have been a longer segment on channel 2 at 6 that I missed. I would think they will have follow-ups at 9 on channel 2.

Also, you may want to check KSDK's website; it has some of the records that you may read. Nothing too much thus far, but they did say they had received a large amount of records. Maybe some of you can share your opinions?

Thank you Overtheriver! Here's the media link. We can discuss these documents on the discussion thread "Chris Coleman Employment Documents"

The documents from Joyce Meyer Ministries say Coleman was a model employee during his time as security chief. They also show Coleman described himself as withdrawn, moody and unaffectionate during a personality test.

(The site gives numerous links to viewing these records).

Referencing an earlier report on this page from July 23 that stated: "A judge today ordered prosecutors to hand over the Major Case Squad report on the Coleman family murders to defendant Christopher Coleman's lawyers within 21 days."

August 13 would seem to be 21 days - so defense should now have access to the MCS report; as quiet as defense counsel has been, I personally don't expect any findings to be released to the public.

WHARTON ASSIGNED TO BE THE JUDGE IN THE COLEMAN MURDER CASE

WATERLOO -- A new judge has been appointed to replace St. Clair County Chief Circuit Judge John Baricevic in the case against Christopher Coleman, who is accused of strangling his wife and two young sons in their Columbia home.

Circuit Judge Milton Wharton, who is death-penalty certified, will travel from Belleville to Monroe County to hear the case against the 32-year-old former bodyguard for renowned evangelist Joyce Meyer.

Coleman asks for free lawyers, says too poor
Christopher Coleman says he is too poor to pay his legal fees and is asking a judge to declare him indigent.

Coleman, 32, lists his total debts and liabilities at $243,000, according to an affidavit filed on Thursday. The affidavit shows Coleman is upside down on the mortgage of his home in Columbia, Ill. The home's value is listed at $195,000. It currently has a $240,000 mortgage.

If a judge is convinced Coleman has no money, he could get access to the Illinois Capital Litigation Fund to pay the costs of his legal defense.

Chris Coleman will get access to taxpayer funds for his defense, but a judge appointed two new attorneys to handle his case.

John O'Gara and Jim Stern, of Belleville, will serve as Coleman's new attorneys. Coleman was ruled indigent by a judge and that triggered the addition of those two lawayers being paid by the taxpayers.

O'Gara won an acquittal in a murder trial in Monroe County in 2005.

Coleman will also keep Clayton attorneys Art and Bill Margulis, but they will not be paid by the state.

St. Louis (KMOV) - The plaintiff in the Christoper Coleman case intend to put Coleman's former employer on the stand.

....

Attorneys for Joyce Meyer Ministries said they're disappointed the hearing was continued. Ultimately, though, they believe the ministries will be found to have had no responsibility for the deaths of Sheri, Gavin and Garett.

The parties are due back in court December 18th. While it's possible Joyce Meyer and the others could be deposed before then, there's a chance she may not have to take the stand at all.

On November13, 2009:

COLUMBIA. IL (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - A trial date has been set for accused murderer Chris Colman. A Monroe County judge has stated that his criminal trial will being in August 2010. Another pre-trial hearing will be held in March 2010. The bodies of Chris' wife, Sheri Coleman, and their two boys, Garret and Gavin, were discovered inside their Columbia home May 5th. Coleman was arrested at his parents' home in Chester Illinois May 19th. He pleaded not guilty to all 3 murder charges.

A wrongful death lawsuit filed has also been filed on behalf of Sheri Coleman's family. In it, the family accuses Christopher Coleman of being responsible for the deaths for Sheri, and her sons Gavin and Garett, or at least negligent. They say the case is not about money, but about keeping anyone from "profiting from the deaths" of Sheri Coleman and her boys.

Does this mean that JM will not have to appear in court in December?

WATERLOO — While accused killer Christopher Coleman has welcomed numerous jail visits from pastors and ministers, he has turned away a former co-worker from his old employer, the Joyce Meyer Ministries.

.....

Monroe County Jail records, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, show that in September, Coleman turned away Michael Shepard, the leadership training coordinator for the ministry — and its only official to attempt to see him.

Shepard declined to comment about it, referring all questions to Michael King, the ministry's lawyer. King said the two were friends prior to the killings, and that Shepard tried to visit in a personal capacity.

COLUMBIA, Il. -- Confiding in a close friend about her fraying marriage, Sheri Coleman expressed fear in the months before she and her sons were slain that husband Christopher Coleman would harm her.

A narrative written for police by the friend, Kathy L. LaPlante, said she immediately presumed that Christopher Coleman, now charged with three counts of first-degree murder, had killed his family.
