Phillip Garrido Created His Own Elementary School in 2006
Saturday, October 10, 2009
<snipped>
According to the Contra Costa County recorder’s office, Garrido filed two applications for his school. The first was filed on Jan 31, 2006 and used the name of “The Phillip C Knight” for the business. In August, he filed a second application and used the name Phillip C Knight Institute.

‘Phillip C. Knight’ is an alias that Garrido also used on his website, ‘Voices Revealed‘. The website also lists his e-mail address as ‘phillipcknight@yahoo.com‘. One purpose of using the alias may have been to hide the fact that his private school was being run by a registered sex offender.

The dangers of strangers
Cops on alert, parents on edge after attempted abduction reports
Monday, October 12, 2009
<snipped>
Schenectady police seemed sure they had their man Wednesday. They had detained a suspect after an attempted abduction report in a community on high alert because of two earlier reports of strangers trying to lure youngsters into their vehicles.

In the end, the local man in custody turned out to be the child's grandfather, police said.

But the false alarm underscores the balance authorities must strike in ensuring the safety of children without encroaching on the rights of people going about their daily business, which may include interaction with unruly youngsters. The local angst follows a national outcry over the arrest in August of a California couple accused of the horrific kidnapping and rape of a young girl. Jaycee Lee Dugard was abducted in 1991 when she was 11 and held captive for more than 18 years.

Officials withholding parole documents of alleged kidnapper Jaycee Lee Dugard
Monday, Oct 12, 2009 @ 11:24:33 AM
<snipped>
Phillip Garrido, who is charged with kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991 from her ski resort town of South Lake Tahoe and raping and holding her captive for over 18 years, was on federal and then state parole during the time period he held Dugard. There has been a great deal of criticism regarding how federal and California state parole agents supervised him during this time. Now, the U.S. Parole Commission is withholding 92 pages of Garrido's file because it says that releasing them would invade the personal privacy of other parties.

District examines after-school security after alleged kidnapping attempt
Tuesday, October 13, 2009
<snipped>
An alleged kidnapping attempt of a 6-year-old girl last Tuesday at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School has district officials on alert and examining current procedures for supervising students after the last bell rings.

The district notified parents late Wednesday afternoon, a whole day after the alleged kidnapping attempt. The apparent delay led to criticism by local parents who wanted to be notified immediately.

The woman is described as 5-feet, 5-inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds, with blue eyes and long, black, bushy hair. She was wearing a white tank top, dark brown shorts and white tennis shoes at the time. The suspect is possibly familiar with the area because she did not take the most immediate route to Highway 50, taking East San Bernardino Avenue instead of Apache Avenue.

Dugard's reintroduction to society has been slow. She and her mother and 19 year-old sister, Shayna, holed up in an undisclosed location for weeks, getting to know one another again. It was during this time that Dugard told her daughters about her past and abduction and the truth about their father. Family members of Dugard have said that she and her daughters are adapting very well to their new situation and overall seems to be moving ahead, albeit slowly.

Curry asked if Jaycee is ready to testify in case. Schulte said she didn't want to speculate, but that Jacyee is "cooperating fully" with authorities.

"Part of this therapy ... is to get the girls to understand that Garrido may have fathered them, but he is not their father," said Dr. Jeffrey Gardere, a clinical psychologist. "This is a monster. They have to learn to build trust with other males in their lives, other people in their lives, and they are doing that."

Discussing therapy, Dr. Jeff Gardere stated that even though Jaycee is resilient and has expressed overwhelming joy, she and her daughters have numerous psychological issues that they must work through, primarily rebuilding trust. The family has been involved in therapy and has been working on rebuilding bonds and trust. Dr. Gardere said that they must focus on building new lives for themselves.

Jaycee Dugard First Photo Becomes People Magazine Cover: 1000 Words Will Never Be Enough

But it is also understood that a photo of Jaycee Dugard will not tell her story. A two-dimensional representation cannot convey the internal scars, the suffering, and the psychological and emotional stress of a small girl held captive, isolated for years from her family and friends and forced to endure a world imposed upon her by sexual predator. And that photo can never convey the life she led, from the kidnapping to the childbearing to her exposure to Phillip Garrido, who would begin a religious transformation during her captivity and begin to treat her differently.

Only Jaycee Lee Dugard can tell her story. Perhaps one day she will.

She looks remarkably young, and happy. I showed the photo to forensic psychiatrist Dr. Saul Faerstein.

"The smile on her face is quite deceptive. It's a true expression of what she's feeling right now, but inside, there's confusion, it's pain. There are a lot of things she needs to work through," Dr. Faerstein said.
