This is horrifying. Poor Shanquella and her family.

I'm curious about the potential charge of femicide. My google skills tell me that femicide = killing because the victim is female. I haven't read anything about the reasoning for that line of investigation. As far as I have read, the individuals most directly responsible for her death were all women. The 2 male "friends" seem to have been onlookers in the attacks. So they are considering that these women attacked and eventually killed Shanquella because she was a woman...? Any insight?

(I realize that this investigative avenue comes from Mexico, but I don't think the qualifications for "femicide" would be that different amongst different countries, IMO)

The family might be liimited to civil court, a wrongful death suit?

@PrairieWind @gitana1 @Shamrock1 some of our attorneys.

I read, but skipped the videos.

RIP, Ms. Robinson, peace & comfort to your loved ones!

A civil suit for wrongful death could be an option. The US DOJ can charge US citizens for murder of other US citizens abroad in certain circumstances. I don't know a whole lot about that process. The Attorney General has to approve it and State Department I think. Unfortunately, Mexico just seems uninterested in prosecuting it, probably because all those likely responsible are already gone.

so glad this thread is here to make sure to keep up about Quella... my heart breaks those who genuinely loved and cared about her... the pain they must feel... so devastating on so many different levels. Thank you to all who cared to read and post on this thread right now. The more eyes, the better. IMO.

I can see why Mexican authorities initially blew this off. It was tourists, and the suspects went back to the US, not a Mexican problem. But its now very public, so I can see where Mexican authorities may now have a very different point of view. first, this is a case that should be fairly easy to prosecute. There is the video of the woman beating her. Second, it makes them look good. But most of all, Mexico does NOT want Americans to think they can just come down to Mexico to commit their murders and go home free and clear. That would be a disaster.

Very glad a discussion has been opened here. I’ve been following since night 1 the video circulated everywhere. Very disturbing and you can’t unsee it.
People speculated the attacker was a man for the way she slung her like a rag doll. It was inhumane to spin someone’s neck like that during a fight!
This story makes me see red! Hopefully some arrests soon.

<modsnip> I'm glad I didn't see the neck swing video. I can't unsee the other. There were other reasons people speculated about gender, for which I won't get into.

I can't believe how little media and people are talking about this.

The second video, which was taken before the beating, is at the link:

“A new video of the North Carolina woman who suffered a broken neck after being brutally beaten at a Mexican resort shows her laughing with her friends just hours before she died.

In the video shared by the Neighborhood Talk, Shanquella Robinson, 25, can be heard joking about her friends taking too long to get ready inside their Fundadores Beach Club villa.

'It don't take that long to get naked. Where y'all at?' Robinson jokes in a video of her walking around the San Jose del Cabo resort.“

Fatal violence against a woman, because of her gender. The way I interpret it is that all femicides are also female homicides, but not all female homicides are femicides, IMO.
Thanks so much for this clarification. So by Mexico's own definition, it wouldn't matter who was in the video breaking her neck and severing her spinal cord. It's Femicide...violence against a woman.

I am guessing the reason she could not fight back or run away, and said No when asked, is because she was already severely injured and unable to do so.

Yes, the more details that come out about this case - the more we realize how heinous this actually was. Any kind of homicide is awful. But, to be attacked & killed by your friends - that you trusted - is IMHO worse than this happening at the hands of a stranger.

Going along with my last post & some of the other online responses, I wonder if the perps. will even have criminal charges brought against them for this murder?! Given that this happened in another country (Mexico) and the fact that they all appear to be American (the victim & the perps.) who's going to prosecute this?! If the Mexican government has the jurisdiction & the responsibility - the perps. have already left the country, so it seems like it will be tough for them to pursue this. Conversely, if the U.S. has the responsibility - I wonder why no further details have come out regarding this.

This crime definitely seems premeditated. I wonder if the friends specifically committed this in Mexico & then came back to the U.S. to avoid prosecution?!
My understanding is that if premeditated here in the US, they can be charged for that here. Civil suits are also an option.

She was blindsided and thought the beating would end with her not responding. Her parents both say she said "no" to fighting back because she was passive and that was who she was.

She might have been passive but when someone is beating you like that your instinct would be to try and get away or protect ones self. It appeared she could not, possibly from injuries.

Why were they getting naked?

“Information from a police report says Shanquella Robinson was alive when medical help first arrived at the vacation home where she was staying with a group of people last month in Cabo, Mexico.

The report differs from details previously reported from 25-year-old Robinson’s death certificate that said she died within 15 minutes of being injured. Instead, a police report excerpt shows a doctor from a local hospital was with Robinson and others in the house for close to three hours before she was pronounced dead.

The police record indicates Gutiérrez found “a female” — understood in the report to be Robinson — with stable vital signs but dehydrated, unable to communicate verbally and appearing to be inebriated.

The doctor reported that she believed Robinson needed to be transferred to a hospital but her friends insisted that she be treated in the villa. Dr. Gutiérrez attempted an IV but was unsuccessful, according to the report excerpt. It’s unclear what medication was in the IV.

The information from police says the doctor was there for close to an hour when Robinson began having a seizure. The convulsions from the seizure lasted less than a minute, according to the report.

“At this point the patient’s friend, named Wenter Donovan, called 911 to request an ambulance,” according to the Observer’s Spanish to English translation of the report. This was around 4:20 p.m.

“In the meantime, the patient presented with difficulty breathing and a lowered pulse, and they gave her rescue breaths.”

The doctor, along with a friend, began administering CPR at 4:49 p.m. when Gutierrez detected Robinson had stopped having a pulse.

Police arrived and talked with the doctor who was treating Robinson at 5:25 p.m. It’s not clear from the information in the police report exactly what time an ambulance arrived from the 911 call.

The report information indicates paramedics “administered a total of 14 rounds of CPR, five doses of adrenaline and six discharges (AED shocks) without success.”

Wow, there's a lot of details in this article I haven't heard before. First off, the "friends" called a doctor. The doctor assumed Shanquella was drunk but suggested she go to the hospital. The "friends" refused until Shanquella had a seizure. How long before the ambulance showed up and why didn't they take her to the hospital ? Was it too late ?
CPR at 4:49pm, police at 5:25 and death at 5:57. I don't think this is standard procedure for reviving someone with CPR unless she was going in and out. Who called the police and why ?
