MOO there are many alienated teens who would like or do draw creepy things. They need a real rule, draw creepy threatening things in school, get suspended

I agree, but the flip side of that is this---once that rule is on the books, they learn not to draw and not to tell anyone. They keep it all inside. Those are the ones you just never see coming.

In a way it's like stopping terrorist attacks. There are so many measures in place, like taking off our shoes on a plane because of the shoe bomber in 2001; but the really crafty ones give no indication, have a plan that LE hasn't imagined, and then there's an attack.

At parent-teacher conferences we always had student monitors to sign in the parents and do other little chores. It's considered an honor and the students are so proud to be chosen. Decades ago, one of my monitors was this very wonderful, smart, nerdy young teen. Honor roll, wonderful home life, sweet boy. Ten or 15 years later, I forget exactly when, he was part of a group of 20-somethings on a cruise ship. They were involved in the disappearance of the husband of a honeymooning couple on that ship.

Sometimes you just don't know.

I do agree there should be a rule, and in my school anything like that goes up the chain to administration. I've turned in violent drawings and writings myself. But again, sometimes the kids will outsmart everyone by completely suppressing every indicator.

It's painful. In this case I do agree that enough was known and Ethan should have been escorted off the premises by either LE, or in an ambulance to a pysch eval. And absolutely his belongings should have been searched by security or LE.

Also

"I've got guns in my head and they won't go" are part of the lyrics to a pop song, a song about being a school shooter.

I wish I didn’t have a personal experience with so many of these cases. But Fwiw, I do in fact have an experience with a case where an online statement about a school was investigated, traced to a young relative, and that young relative was arrested. So online threats CAN be picked up and traced. In my case, I assume it was not by the school but by the FBI or something but I don’t know. It was an even larger high school than Oxford.

Their name and photo was plastered all over the media because they were charged as adult. Despite never approaching the school. It seemed more like social media taunting.

The relative did have at least one fire arm in the home. Which is part of why he was treated that way. It was probably not a legal gun, but I also doubt he bought it. He was a teen whose dad was in jail, living with a single mom. I think it was inherited.

He wasn’t jailed long. They realized he was being dumb. But as much as I love and respect my relative, as much as I feel he has been given a start to life, im glad the system caught his posts.

While I don’t think his words were anything more than social media nonsense, better safe than sorry.

OSD hiring a PRIVATE investigation firm is no different than a PD "investigating" itself. It invites (if not downright guarantees) secrecy, corruption and pre-determined outcomes.

Only a school district trying to manipulate / hide the "facts" to protect OSD and cover its officials' butts would even consider hiring a private entity ... a private firm that can also be fired if it doesn't give the right answers.

This is a bad, dirty move.

Welp.

Here this is. Trying to save their own hides while letting their minor son twist in the wind.

Accused Michigan high-school shooter Ethan Crumbley was given a court-appointed lawyer — while his parents hired their own pricey private legal team to battle the lesser charges against them, a new report says.

James and Jennifer Crumbley, who were charged with involuntary manslaughter as accessories in their 15-year-old son’s first-degree murder case, have hired a team that includes Shannon Smith, who represented disgraced USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, The Independent reported.

Their son, on the other hand, is being represented by court-appointed lawyer Paulette Michel Loftin, a little-known defense attorney from the Detroit suburb of Rochester.

My personal opinion is that any attorney that would take any of these cases is just seeking publicity. I can't see any defence for the crimes. They are blatant and horrendous. Give them their due process and let a jury decide! MOO
A court assigned public defender is not doing anything for publicity—they are following the law by providing legal counsel. Part of their job is to ensure that the client is treated fairly through the process.

I am thankful that the kid will face trial instead of ending in a suicide as so many do.

People typically do not lose their parental rights “merely“ because they’re in jail. There has to be more. Like they’re in for life and the child has no one else to care for them. Or they harmed the child.

I do not believe being in jail right now or having apparently fled would likely impact their parental rights. I believe their negligence with respect to their son, as well as the high probability of being co-defendants with him, definitely could.
Exactly. Also, they are only charged and not convicted of anything at this point

My guess is that the school district will not allow him to make one.

Or his attorney, if he has consulted with one. No statute of limitations on murder. If he could be found culpable in any of these cases. Accessory after the fact? Negligence? Who knows.

Middle ear infection can cause vertigo as demonstrated when Ethan fell.

Lack of sleep too. Was he playing games on the computer all night?
When I first began working night shift and had not been able to sleep properly during the day I was staggering all over the place. MOO

MOO Negligent homicide would be the charges, same as parents.
But MOO the school seemed to have taken action while the parents who knew specifically of ECs new gun and his access did not.

I was only offering up another possibility as someone asked why else someone would be having that issue other than being drunk. Of course everything posted here is just speculation if we don't have a credible source to report facts.

I guess what I am trying to say is that it could be a number of different things that could cause what is seen on the video-- we just cannot know----- I understand though that speculation is a lot of what we do here WS--- and that is fine cause there is just so much we can't know for sure!

I get your point of view when you read this. But look at their website (I posted a screen shot earlier on this thread), these are not the typical kinds of cases they handle. I'd prefer a public defender that has the experience in manslaughter proceedings.
