OXFORD, Mich. – Even after five months since the tragic shooting, some students still don’t feel safe being back in the school.

Parents of the students are pressuring the Oxford School District to change that.

“Theoretically, if another shooting was to happen, people would most likely die if not be severely injured,” said Oxford High School student Griffen Jones. “I hate waking up certain days because the anxiety and stress and lack of safety. It’s like we already have to go back and relive our worst nightmare every day. So, it’s really hard when it feels like my voice is being heard. No one’s voice is being heard.”

The high school junior says he has a hard time focusing in class because of reminders of what happened on November 30...

Family of Hana St. Juliana files lawsuit against Oxford schools (clickondetroit.com)

Lawsuit is the latest in a series of suits against the district, but it is the first one to allege a cover-up to avoid culpability

DETROIT – A new civil suit against Oxford Schools and some administrators was filed in federal court Thursday (April 14) on behalf of the family of Hana St. Juliana, the 14-year-old who was killed the day of the Oxford High School shooting.

In the 52-page filing, family Attorney Michael Pitt argues that the district knew the shooter was suicidal and possibly homicidal and released him back to class anyway...

Oxford officials covered up culpability after massacre, lawsuit claims (detroitnews.com)

Detroit — The family of a student killed in the Oxford school massacre filed a civil lawsuit Thursday against the district and several officials.

The father and older sister of Hana St. Juliana, 14, accused school district officials of manufacturing a cover story to justify letting accused killer Ethan Crumbley return to the classes despite the student exhibiting a "disturbing pattern of behavior." That includes an obsession with guns, access to firearms and being in the "throes of a mental health crisis."

The federal lawsuit is the first of its kind by relatives of a slain student and comes five months after prosecutors say Crumbley killed four students and wounded six others and a teacher during a Nov. 30 shooting spree at the high school.

The claim is at least the third civil lawsuit filed against the district since December, including a $100 million case filed on behalf of survivors...

Parents of accused Oxford shooter, James and Jennifer Crumbley, due in court today

James and Jennifer Crumbley, the parents of the accused Oxford High School shooter, are due in court for a pre-trial hearing on Tuesday after being bound over on manslaughter charges back in February.

The pre-trial hearing is scheduled to start around 10 a.m., you can watch it live on ClickOnDetroit in the video player above, or stream it on your TV using Local 4+

A pre-trial hearing is a precursor to the start of a full trial where defense attorneys have the chance to address any issues in the case, as well as to help lay the foundation for the next step of the case. It’s often an opportunity for a deal to be made before going to trial.

Parents of accused Oxford shooter, James and Jennifer Crumbley, due in court today

There is an agreed upon joint representation waiver.

James Crumbley is hard of hearing and there was an earpiece requested for him.

Court is going through the risks of joint representation.

They consulted with independent counsel regarding joint representation.

By entering this waiver, they will not be able to bring this up on appeal.

Motion to Reduce Bond
The court does not find abuse of discretion by the other judge.

Both have older convictions.
Both have drunk driving convictions that are 17 years old. There's not documented history of alcohol or substance abuse. They both don't have any mental health issues.

The charges are very serious, sentencing guidelines mandate a prison term.

Defendants' employment status and finances - they were employed prior to the arrest. But no info on finances.

The house was sold and used for attorney's fees. The Court is not aware of any current ties to the Michigan community.

Their actions were not consistent with cooperation with law enforcement. Upon a warrant, LE does not have to make an appointment with the defendant. The actions were premeditated and concealed their whereabouts.

The current bond is appropriate, and bond motion is denied.

Pre-Trial:
Defense anticipates filing appx 10 motions, but they want to meet with prosecution to see if there are any stipulations. Motions will be ready to be filed later this week or next week.

They want a stay so they can file an inter-locuatory appeal regarding the bond issue. Judge will not a grant a stay.

Motions to Quash, Motions in Limine, Motions regarding the medical records of the shooter (psychological records). File Motion for Change of Venue.

Judge is willing to meet in Chambers as well.

Prosecution would like a speedy trial.

Judge proposed an Oct. 24 trial.

Prosecution will Motion in Limine for an introduction of evidence and a non-standard jury instruction.

Prosecution will let the Court know about experts as soon as it's determined.

Court thinks it'll take a least a week to select a jury.

Mr. Crumbley is housed in K block, under 24 hour observation. The lights are on 24 hours a day. Asking the court to redirect the jail to reclassify and reassign him to another unit.

Judge wants all Motions in writing, but she doesn't direct the jail. If she finds something in the law that allows the Judge to do something, there's a separation of powers that don't allow her to direct the jail.
