I think there may be several reasons why the killer did not check whether Ally was dead.I'm still hung up on the fact that she was "only" shot once, and they left her with the possibility of still being alive? Unless there was so much damage (as in close range) to insure she was deceased. Perhaps this was the case, but we don't know. It was mentioned upthread that there was extensive collateral damage above and beyond the entry point, if I understood correctly.
The place where Ally collapsed was on private property, near a house. Perhaps the killer felt it was too risky to approach the body.
In the scenario that I imagine, the perpetrator got out of a car before shooting Ally. But I believe she was shot from a distance. So it would take some time (say 20 seconds) to approach the body and to go back to the car (say another 20 seconds). So again the risk of being seen might be too high.
The good samaritan came to the crime scene. The perpetrator might have seen someone coming and fled.
The good samaritan said he was at the pond. I presume this is the pond on his property, about 150-200 yards from the road. The perpetrator may have been as far as 100 yards away from Ally when he shot her. So it is possible that the perpetrator saw the samaritan as he approached the body.
