Thanks for the link, tlcya. From it:

VanCallis, clad in a jail jumper, also addressed the court about "a couple reservations" he had, including about how April's nails appeared at the scene and at the medical examiner's office, a discrepancy in a piece of jewelry and something about her blouse.

"Your attorney will get to do that in the cross-exam," Chrzanowski told VanCallis.

VanCallis then said: "It looks like the crime scene's been staged."

Chrzanowski told VanCallis, "If anybody's gonna blow the defense, it'll be you. ... You're hurting yourself."

Whether a certain cell phone expert will be used for the James VanCallis murder trial was put off for a couple of weeks due to the judge’s concern about his potential fee.

Chrzanowski said in court Monday morning she is concerned that O’Kelly, a Nebraska resident who charged more than $100,000 for his expertise in another case in another state, may be attempting to “get as much money out of this case as he can.”

A Macomb County Circuit Court judge today approved a $15,000 flat fee for a cell phone expert for the defense of a St. Clair County man charged in the 2014 murder of teen April Millsap.
Azhar Sheikh, attorney for James VanCallis, said his expert cut his fees in half from $280 an hour for all of his work in the case. The expert, who will be paid by the court, is in Nebraska, and Sheikh said that he thought it was nice that the expert came down in his fees and that the judge approved the negotiated fee.

"It would have cost a lot more. (The judge) did a good service to the taxpayers of Macomb County," Sheikh said, adding that if the fee wasn't approved the matter could have been an appellate issue, costing the county more money.

VanCallis' trial is scheduled to start Jan. 12. Sheikh said it may take two weeks to pick a jury and and three weeks for the trial. Assistant Prosecutor William Cataldo told the court today that the prosecution has more than 30 witnesses.

A final pretrial is set for Dec. 28 for a final update, such as making sure the defense has everything it needs and that there will be no changes before the trial.
