I'd say that's a pretty big chunk of change for what's likely to be just smoke and mirrors anyway. It's sad it takes so long for justice..

Frustrating how slowly those wheels can grind.

But I am trying to view it optimistically. Maybe the anticipated fee was so high because it will take that long to even try to come up with something that is useful to the defense. If that is so, then this evidence is pretty strong for the prosecution.

I wouldn't drive to Mount Clemens by myself, but if this trial is in session on Fridays, I might ask DH if we can go. We'll be away for 10 days later this month, but I will check this thread for updates while I'm gone. Justice for April and her family! :rose:

“Eyewitness testimony is highly undependable,” Sheikh said. “They were influenced by TV. People started changing their description to fit descriptions in the media.”

Sheikh also will try to undermine VanCallis’ girlfriend, whom he says changed her story. She claimed he made an incriminating statement and cleaned his shoes in the middle of the night hours after the slaying. The shoes were never located.

She told police VanCallis was gone from their home on his motorcycle around the time of the murder

The highly-anticipated trial of the man accused of brutally murdering April Millsap will begin this week with jury selection.

James VanCallis, 34, of Wales Township in St. Clair County, is charged with first-degree murder and two other charges for the slaying of Millsap, 14, in July 2014 along the Macomb Orchard Trail in Armada. Police believe Millsap, who lived about a mile from the murder scene, was walking her dog when she was attacked.

The trial was scheduled to start in September but was delayed one month when the lead prosecutor in the case, Therese Tobin, left the office to take a federal government position as an administrative law judge. It was delayed another three months due to an issue over the defense’s cell phone expert.

Jury selection is set to begin Tuesday in front of Judge Mary Chrzanowski in Macomb County Circuit Court in Mount Clemens.

Three hundred potential jurors were given questionnaires to fill out today as jury selection begins in the trial of a St. Clair County man charged in the 2014 murder of Armada teen April Millsap.

It is expected to take several days to select the jury, and the trial is expected to last several weeks, with the prosecution having nearly three dozen witnesses.

I live in the area. Have been following the case since day 1. Hoping for Justice for April.

When an anonymous donor came forward last month and agreed to match any monetary donations made to the April Millsap Memorial Garden up to $2,000, it was certainly a welcomed boost for garden organizers.

“I was surprised when I first learned of this generous donation and to hear that the donor came forward during the Christmas holiday, in a sense a gift for April for her 16th birthday (on Jan 2), well, it was like a Christmas miracle,” said Jean Fitzell Persely, of Armada, who serves as the garden’s publicity coordinator.

A popular TV documentary series has become an issue in jury selection for the James VanCallis murder trial because a defense witness is one of the key players in the story.

A man was removed from the jury pool Friday after attorneys and the judge learned that he harbored negative perceptions of Michael O’Kelly, who is expected to testify as a cell-phone expert on behalf of VanCallis, accused of murdering April Millsap in 2014.

O’Kelley is a private investigator included in the Netflix series, “Making a Murderer,” who interviewed Brendan Dassey, a co-defendant of Steven Avery who was convicted of murdering Teresa Halbach in Wisconsin in 2005.

A 14-person jury has been seated in the trial of the James VanCallis, accused of killing April Millsap in 2014 along the Macomb Orchard Trail in Armada.

.....

Judge Mary Chrzanowski, who has presided over jury selection, had planned to transfer the case to Judge James Biernat Jr. once the trial began because she has been named as a federal administrative law judge and was leaving Jan. 29, prior to the expected trial’s end. But Chrzanowski indicated Tuesday she will be able to preside over the trial.
