“GRAND RAPIDS — A jury is struggling to come to a decision in the case of Holland man James Chance, whose son Jared Chance was convicted of killing and dismembering Kalamazoo-area woman Ashley Young. James Chance is accused of helping his son during the aftermath of the mutilation of Young.

[SBM]

Monday afternoon, after about 10 hours of deliberation Friday afternoon and Monday morning, the jury reported it had reached a verdict on one count but could not agree on the other two counts. Chance is charged with accessory after the fact to the mutilation of a body and two counts of perjury during an investigative subpoena.

The judge ordered the jury to continue to deliberate, reminding the jury it was its duty to reach a unanimous verdict.

“GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man was convicted Monday of accessory after the fact in the dismemberment of the woman his son killed in 2018.

In addition, a jury acquitted James Chance of one count of perjury and was deadlocked on a second count of perjury.

Kent County Judge Paul Denenfeld declared a mistrial on that second count of perjury, which means Chance could be tried again for it.

Chance, 77, was stoic as the verdicts were read.

Chance is expected to be ordered to serve up to six months in jail for the accessory charge. The perjury charge could have sent him to prison for the rest of his life. He will remain free on bond pending his sentencing on March 11.

Jurors got the case Friday. They deliberated for four hours then and then all day Monday before their decisions — and lack thereof on the third count — were announced around 5 p.m.

“GRAND RAPIDS — A Kent County jury has found Holland man James Chance, father of convicted killer and Holland native Jared Chance, guilty of accessory after the fact, but has acquitted him of one count of perjury.

The jury was unable to reach a verdict on a second perjury count, resulting in a mistrial on that particular count.

[SBM]

The sentencing guidelines for the accessory charge call for a sentence between zero and six months in jail, the prosecutor said.

If he had been convicted of perjury, he could have faced the possibility of a maximum sentence of life in prison, which is the maximum penalty for perjury during a homicide investigation.

[SBM]

The Kent County Prosecutor's Office will have to decide whether to retry James Chance for perjury.

‘We're disappointed obviously in the guilty verdict on the lesser charge. We're very pleased, however, that the jury acquitted him on the much more serious charge of perjury, and we'll be prepared to retry the third count if that's what the prosecutor decides to do,’ Chance's lawyer Laura Joyce said after the verdict.

[SBM]

Chance was found not guilty of lying about the time of day the family returned to Holland, but the jury could not agree on whether Chance was lying about the route they took home.

Throughout the trial [Ashley] Young's family watched from the gallery, but they were not available for comment on the verdict.

Chance, 77, is expected to appear in court on March 11 to be sentenced.

Barbara Chance entered a no contest plea to similar charges of accessory after the fact and one count of perjury. Her sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 19.”

Father of Jared Chance won't face second trial for perjury

Friday, January 24, 2020

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) -- Following a hung jury on the question of perjury charges, James Chance will not be facing a second trial.

Kent County prosecutors are declining to seek a retrail for Chance, who was found guilty earlier this month for being an accessory after the fact in the dismemberment of Ashley Young.
[.....]
Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker announced in a statement, “I have decided that we will not re-try James Chance for the remaining perjury offense."

That decision was announced by the prosecutors office on Friday, January 24th, as uncertaintly loomed over whether they would seek Chance back in court after a jury failed to reach a verdict on a second count of perjury. The jury decided previously that Chance was not guilty of the first count of perjury.
[......]
Chance faces a maximum of six months in jail for the accessory charge, and is allowed to remain free on bond until his sentencing on March 11th.

Wednesday, February 19th:
*Sentencing Hearing (@ am ET) – MI – Ashley Regina-Maria Young (31) (last seen Nov. 29, 2018, Oshtemo Township, Kalamazoo County, found Dec. 2, 2018) – only for *Barbara Louise Chance (63/now 65) (Jared’s mother) charged (12/10/18), arrested (12/11/18) & arraigned (12/12/18) with accessory after the fact of a felony & perjury. Plead not guilty. $25K bond. (released on 12/12/18). Bound over from Kent County to Grand Rapids Circuit Court.
1/6/20 Update: Barbara Chance plead no contest to charges of accessory after the fact to a felony & perjury the morning of Jan. 6, as her husband James, watching from the courtroom gallery, prepared to go to trial for the same charges. She will be sentenced on Feb. 19. The judge said based upon his evaluation, Barbara’s maximum sentence would be one year in the county jail, unless new information comes to light during the pre-sentence investigation that affects the evaluation. She has a ‘clean prior criminal history per Judge. James' trial started with jury selection Monday.
*James Howard Chance (76) – 1/13/20: Found guilty of acceptance after the fact, not guilty of one count of perjury, hung on the other count of perjury. Accessory after the fact carries a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison. Guidelines call 0-6 months in jail for Chance for accessory after the fact. He remains free until sentencing March 11. 1/24/20: DA will not retry Chance on the perjury count.
*Jared James Chance (29) – Trial was 9/9/19 & found guilty. Sentenced to 100 to 200 years.

Pay wall.... Will see what else I can dig up today. That's the Holland Sentinal had to be more in media in the area ( I'd Hope)
Think perhaps the LE connection has been a factor in coverage on sentencing
