Man charged with assault of 4-year-old boy who was found dead on mid-Michigan reservation

According to the criminal complaint, Carnel’s mother told investigators that in late May or early June, she saw her son with a bruised and swollen face as well as a cut lip. She told authorities that her son said he was struck by Bennett.

A few days later, according to the complaint, she told authorities she saw Bennett pick up her son by the neck and drop him before dragging him into a room by his foot.

The worst thing about being a member of Websleuths, is when you log in, and go to look at a thread you have been following, and the heading has changed from the Missing Forum, to the Located Forum with a heading "Found Deceased". :(

Oh, no, is always my reaction, and I always feel like I have been kicked in the gut.

In beautiful Carnel's case, it is no different.

Double kick, when I see words like "burned" and the smell of "barbeque". O.M.G.

Immediately brought to mind the tragic case of Jonathan Foster, burned with welding torches and murdered by Mona Nelson. She is still awaiting trial.

Rest in Peace, sweet Carnel. You deserved so very much more. :(

At least I think we can be confident that this guy isn't going to get $250,000 bond like Mona Nelson has.

Found Deceased TX - Mona Nelson charged w/ Murder of Jonathan Foster, 12, Houston, 24 Dec 2010 #12 - Page 11 - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community

That's the only silver lining I am seeing right now.

The more "information" that keeps coming out NOW is making me increasingly more pissed off. :banghead:

Im curious now that Dominck's law has passed whether JC will face charges:

http://www.dominickslaw.info/law.html

Specifically, section 9 that states:

Section 9:In the event that a minor is abused and or murdered in the presence of their biological, foster, step- and/or adopted parent, or legal guardian, and the parent or legal guardian is capable yet does nothing to protect the child from harm, said parent or legal guardian will automatically be convicted of the same charges as the perpetrator

or section 5:

Section 5:To expand mandatory reporting of child abuse to include all people over the age of 18 with reasonable cause. Failure to do so could result in misdemeanor charges punishable by fines up to $500, community service up to 100 hours and/or imprisonment for up to 1 year

WHY THE HELL DID YOU STAY WITH HIM AFTER THAT JAIMEE?? My heart is breaking...why was this not reported? why would you stay with someone who would strike your sons face leaving it swollen and bruised?!

And she kept him around - after witnessing this kind of behavior towards her son? :thud:

The link doesn't work for me.

I don't know that she could be held accountable according to section #9. This did not occur in her presence, she was at work. I'm sure LE already verified that she was in fact at work, the hours she said she was on June 21st.

As for section 5. Wouldn't numerous family members possibly be liable? AFAIK, JC and AB were not the only adults who lived in the home on Tomah, and not the only people over 18 involved in this childs life.

IDK. I'm waiting for more info from the coroner and the authorities.

No excuse for this, no excuse at all.

RIP sweet Carnel.

I don't care how young and naive a single mother is, once she sees with her own eyes, her boyfriend picking up her child by the neck, leaving bruises on his bottom, his face swollen, dragging him into the room by his foot---once that sort of things begin, and then her child asks her for help because the bf is 'mean'---once that kind of violence happens, you CANNOT LEAVE YOUR CHILD IS HIS CARE AT NIGHT WHILE YOU WORK.
I know this is a victim friendly forum, but I am sitting on my hands right now...:furious:

Charging AB with assault as opposed to either murder or desecrating a corpse is an insult.
There are just no words. Sitting on my hands. :furious:

the only victim i see here is Carnel...mom has/had tons of family support-i am sure they would have protected her and Carnel had she opened her mouth earlier...too little too late now.

Someone tell me AB is in the general population. Please tell me he is not getting any special treatment. He certainly did not give Carnel any special treatment and does not deserve any himself.

But didn't she say she did see him drag him by his foot into another room?

I'm hoping the assault charge and no murder charge yet means that the investigators are still trying to gather the evidence they need before charging him. It doesn't seem that he is going to confess. JMO

I was defending Jaimee at first but my world has been shattered...But this can't just be black and white guys...there are a lot of underlying issues at hand. Not that this makes it right for her to not protect her son, but I think maybe she might have been being abused as well. And about AB being only charged for abuse--they are only doing that to keep him in custody. They are going to need time to process everything so they can have a seamless trial. We certainly don't want a really good lawyer getting him off with 5 years you know? That stuff happens all the time. Im sure they are getting everything around while they detain him in police custody. ALSO I know the family is literally like trying to lynch mob him. They have PLANS to murder AB. They were going to stake out his house with shot guns, kid nap, torture, and kill the SOB. Personally I would have been fine with that--but I imagine LE is trying to keep his life safe, for whatever reason. MORAL OF THE STORY:
NEVER date a man with a face tattoo.....

okay thats not really the moral but still.

I do not like reading this, it hurts me to know how he suffered and no one helped him. I am so sorry and so sad.

I think the reason LE went back to search the house again, is because AB's cell phone showed that he never left the vicinity of the home, and LE just received the records back yesterday.

Why is it that people witness these monsters abusing and murdering animals, and they don't report it to authorities?

If they DO report animal abuse to authorities, many times there is nothing done.

The amount of murderers known to be abusive to animals in recent months is really, really alarming.

They say the first sign someone is/will be a murderer is harming animals....and thanks for the info Wondergirl I was really curious about that
