Hearing began a little late today (Judge had another commitment), but they are moving along quickly. Total number of statements is 158, but I'm not sure how many have already been heard or how many more will speak or provide written statements to be read by court officials. Still no mention of when sentencing will take place.

What others knew: Culture of denial protected Nassar for years
Victims say trusted adults were slow to act

(CNN) - One by one in court, Larry Nassar's victims spoke with the strength of survivors to shame the man who abused them and the adults who silenced them.

Some Olympic gymnasts as well as former and current athletes described how they moved quickly to report the ex-USA Gymnastics team doctor when he left them frightened and hurt beyond words.

But the adults they trusted failed to tell authorities or were slow to react to allegations. That inaction fostered the perfect environment for a serial sexual predator to run rampant, many victims recalled.

Nassar has pleaded guilty to seven counts of criminal sexual conduct in Ingham County, Michigan, and has admitted to sexually assaulting and abusing young girls under the guise of providing medical treatment. He's expected to be sentenced Tuesday and faces up 125 years in prison. He has already been sentenced in another court to 60 years in prison on child *advertiser censored* charges...

I got to actually watch a good portion today. Most likely the large number of young ladies who came together for this made it a little easier for them as a group to speak out. But I still marvel at their courage and ability to stand before the court and this abuser with such dignity. With many, I see what appears to be a sense of pride for having taken this very big and intimidatiing/scary step.

and kudos to the Judge who shows such patience, and gives encouragement and praise to each speaker.

a really impressive model of how abuse cases should be handled.

Hearing has resumed following lunch break. Still no word on when sentencing might be. I'm hoping it's today since I have to be out for a while tomorrow.

She broke me up .... and defendant is finally shedding tears. Too late to change a danged thing, but bless her heart, she( possibly) got through his wall.

Nassar has actually shed tears a few times, but I don't think it necessarily means that he regrets what he did or feels any remorse for the serial sexual abuse. He is disgusting, despicable, a disgraceful human being. I have no sympathy for this little man, but I do feel sorry for his ex-wife and children.

Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson slams USA Gymnastics
by Tracy Connor

Gold-medal gymnast Shawn Johnson, a star of the 2008 Olympics, says that USA Gymnastics has "failed their athletes so terribly" she would not let her own child join the sport.

In a video posted on YouTube, Johnson said other elite athletes who have spoken out about being sexually abused by former team doctor Larry Nassar are "her heroes."

"You have experienced some of the worst evil in the world," she said...

Joan Ryan Larry Nassar is just the beginning. Gymnastics culture has been abusive for decades.
I wrote about the systemic child abuse occurring in elite gymnastics in 1995. Why has change taken so long?

The email arrived last week as I knew it would: A request for an interview. It happens every time the sick secrets of women’s gymnastics slip back out into the world.

In 1995, I wrote a book that detailed the culture of abuse in elite gymnastics: the broken bodies and psyches, the tunnel-vision parents, the manipulative coaches, the enablers at the national federation. The young women told me of training with fractured bones, cutting themselves to deal with the pressure, attempting suicide after falling short of Olympic glory, starving themselves to stay rail thin. One anorexic former gymnast weighed 65 pounds when I interviewed her by phone; she died two months later...

Court has adjourned for the day. Three more victims/survivors will provide statements tomorrow. Sentencing anticipated mid- to late-morning. I have gym class at 11:00 and hope sentencing takes place before 10:30.

USA Gymnastics suspends ex-coach Geddert

USA Gymnastics has suspended former U.S. women’s national team coach John Geddert, the owner of the Twistars gymnastics club near Lansing, as the fallout from the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal continues to spread.

Nassar, a disgraced former USA Gymnastics sports doctor, pleaded guilty last year to sexual abuse charges involving a girl under 13 and two teenagers at Twistars.

USA Gymnastics did not disclose its reasons for suspending Geddert, whose only comment came in a statement last March in which he expressed “zero knowledge” of the allegations against Nassar...

Time for MSU president and others who knew about Nassar's history of sexual assault to resign.

Geddert skated out of assault charges before. Working side by side with Nassar all these years (supplying his demand, ick) as well as being a personal friend of his, you just have to wonder how he could not know. Especially after supposedly walking in on the sexual abuse taking place on at least one account.
Geddert is a graduate of my high school, and is in the Hall of Fame for our town. There is a write-up about him on our school district's HOF page. I doubt they'll edit it to include his suspension. :eyeroll:

Besides Geddert, MSU administration, USGA, among others who enabled Nassar, I can't help wondering what, if anything, about her husband's sexual proclivities Nassar's ex-wife knew? I realize that she and their three children are victims, but it's my understanding that Nassar's ex-wife is a Physician's Assistant in the Lansing area where they lived. Did she know about her ex-husband's "medical treatments" that amounted to serial sexual abuse of hundreds of young girls for at least 20 years? Did she know about the pornographic photos on LN's computer?

I'm sure that the former Ms. Nassar and her children have suffered greatly throughout this ordeal, and my heart goes out to them. I hope that they have spoken with authorities about what, if anything, they knew about the ongoing sexual abuse of hundreds of girls/young women. :moo:

Trustee: MSU board discussed ‘succession plan’
The Detroit News

As pressure continues to mount on Lou Anna Simon to resign over the Larry Nassar scandal, one of MSU’s trustees says the board has discussed a “succession plan.”

Brian Mosallam said on Twitter that most of an hours-long trustees’ meeting Friday focused on the Nassar case and Simon’s future.

“The absolutel (sic) majority of the meeting was about Nasser and how to move forward including that a succession plan would look like, an independent review (AG) and the Board seeking outside advise in exercising their independent oversight role,” he wrote in a Tweet posted Tuesday afternoon.

Mosallam’s online comment came in the wake of comments another trustee, Joel Ferguson, made to a Lansing-area radio station Monday...

Twistars' Geddert says in email to families he plans to retire
Eric Lacy, Lansing State Journal

LANSING -- John Geddert, owner of Twistars USA Gymnastics Club, said in a letter to families whose children train there that he is preparing to retire.

Hours after USA Gymnastics announced that Geddert had been suspended from membership, he sent an email Monday night to "Twistars families" saying, among other things, that he has been preparing to retire at age 60, the age he has reached.

"Most of you have noticed that I have been taking a back seat this year," Geddert said. "This has been part of my exit strategy to retire at age 60. Well 60 is here."

USA Gymnastics oversees competitive gymnastics in the United States. Under USAG bylaws, a suspended member cannot coach at sanctioned events, among other restrictions...

NCAA opens investigation into MSU in Nassar scandal

Michigan State University trustees backpedaled on dismissive comments from their vice chair Tuesday as the NCAA opened an investigation into the university’s handling of the Larry Nassar scandal.

The NCAA sent a letter of inquiry to MSU, formally opening an investigation, MSU spokesman Jason Cody confirmed, the same day trustee Joel Ferguson apologized for referring to sex abuse by the former university doctor as “this Nassar thing.”

Ferguson retracted the “inadvertent comment” made on a Lansing radio show, saying he recognizes the suffering of female victims of former MSU doctor Larry Nassar. His apology came in the form of a statement sent by Kelly Rossman-McKinney, a Lansing public relations specialist.

“I’m sorry that I sounded so insensitive because I am really not,” Ferguson, an influential trustee who has served on MSU’s board for 30 years, said in an interview with The Detroit News. “I’m a guy who has three daughters and one granddaughter … I am very sympathetic and for everything that these young ladies who were abused (need)...

Michigan State University receives letter from NCAA about Larry Nassar case
NCAA opens investigation as Day 7 of Nassar's sentencing looms

LANSING, Mich. - The NCAA sent a letter of inquiry to Michigan State University about the school's handling of the Larry Nassar case.

Nassar, a former sports doctor who has admitted to sexually abusing young girls, spent decades working for the university. Nassar is accused of abusing more than 100 young gymnasts...

Longtime MSU trustee Joel Ferguson told a radio station Friday that President Lou Anna Simon wasn't going anywhere.

"There's so many more things going on at the university that just this Nassar thing," Ferguson said.

Those comments went national, and the board of trustees was heavily criticized for trivializing the sexual abuse of Nassar's victims...
