Inmate: Gentz told story of killing Jane Bashara alone

Oralandar Brand-Williams, The Detroit News 7:24 p.m. EDT April 5, 2016

A fellow inmate of the handyman who admitted killing Jane Bashara testified Tuesday that Joseph Gentz told him and others that he acted alone in the 2012 murder of the Grosse Pointe Park woman.

Paralegal Carlo Vartinelli, who is serving life for first-degree criminal sexual conduct, appeared before Judge Vonda Evans of Wayne County Circuit Court to answer questions about the affidavit he says he took from Gentz late last year while serving time with him at the Macomb Correctional facility. The affidavit was taken from 12 pages of allegedly handwritten notes that Gentz signed on Dec. 2...

Seems the hearing is still on for today. I don't know when it will start, this courtroom seems to always run late.

DETROIT - The two men convicted in Jane Bashara's murder will be in court Tuesday as her husband works to get a new trial.

Judge Vonda Evans is holding a hearing regarding whether Joe Gentz, a handyman who said he killed Jane Bashara after being ordered to do it by her husband, can offer new testimony.

Gentz, has changed his original story, saying in an affidavit that investigators coerced him to lie about what happened...

BB already complaining about feeling light-headed. Tells Judge he was given something in his holding cell and will be alright. It's always something with BB

Recess until 11:15. Judge says they will set a date for closing arguments and she is "ready to rule on this"

What's going on? Judge seated. Are they waiting for Bob? Court personnel appear to be giggling about something :D

According to the attorney, Gentz is going to speak to being coerced by the police, not to "Bashara was not there". Judge is telling him he cannot speak to only parts of what is in the affidavit he made. Judge asks Gentz if he wants a recess (until 1:00) to determine if he wants to testify to the entire affidavit. Recess until 1:00

Gentz apparently wants to testify re: certain parts of his affidavit but not others. Judge advises JG that it's all or nothing. Recess until 1:00PM during which time Gentz will confer with attorney about whether or not he'll testify.

Video of first half of hearing:

Any thoughts on whether or not Gentz will testify? I never thought he'd be a reliable witness under any circumstances. I can't see JG handling a sharp cross-examination by the Prosecutor; I think she'll tear him limb from limb  Court resumes in 5 minutes. This should be interesting...
