Hopefully I've got this correct. Refer to links below for confirmation/more info.

Jeffrey Thomas Willis

• Birth Date: March 1970

• 1988: Graduate of Fruitport High School.

• 1988 to 1990: Attended Muskegon Community College.

• 1995 to 1998: Worked as a janitor for North Muskegon Public Schools. ("He listed employment before that as a machine operator, industrial worker and butcher".) No further information given in article, that I can see, regarding who exactly the employers were prior to 1995.

• 1999: Fired from Fruitport Community Schools after working one year as a custodian.

• "Until his arrest he worked at Herman Miller's Spring Lake Township facility on Hickory Street. According to his application for a public defender, he has worked for the furniture manufacturer for 18 years."

• Married: September 2003.

As I'm posting these and looking at Otto's map, I've noticed that Otto's map does not contain any missing persons for the first decade of the 2000s. Willis may have been working another area at that time if he really is a serial killer, unless he was dormant during that time. Now I'm looking for a pattern in an area of the State during that time period.
 
I'm more than willing to believe that Willis's LE friend had absolutely no idea, just as JW's wife didn't.

I think he's as shocked as anyone. I don't imagine there were any signs that he should have picked up on- it seems as though JW was quite adept at leading a double life. I think his friends and family are also victims to a degree in this.

Except for the cousin- but until we find out more details, I think it's possible the cousin was getting aggravated with being questioned and so gave a false story as a big eff you to the cops. Not exactly the brightest move, but in my experience there is a lot of tension and disrespect between prison guards and police officers in general. A former LE friend who I worked with in workshops with incarcerated communities gave me an earful about that -at least among the cops he worked with, prison guards were considered only one step up from those they guarded. (An aside: Now, there may be some racism involved with that attitude on the cops' part in my geographical area, since the majority of guards are black and the majority of cops aren't, but both groups I interacted with visibly struggled to tolerate each other.)

There could have been some odd dynamics at play. Or then again, his cousin may have been covering for him or, as has been mentioned, involved to some degree. Interested to see how this all shakes out.

He might have gone dormant--he got married in 2003, right? Might have not felt the urge, or not had as much flexibility of schedule.

That's still one of the better articles. Thanks for finding it.

Most of my SK reading was about the Grim Sleeper, an LA-area killer who became active again after a 20+-year lapse. He had a fairly classic comfort zone that was roughly (if I recall correctly) 35 mile radius of his home and stayed along the main roads. I don't know whether after they identified him they found that his real life conformed to the theory, but the map sure looked clear.

The following is what was going on in the early 90s. JW graduated in 1988. This link has a lot of newspaper articles from that time. Fourth article down is about a girl who could've gone to JWs high school. I can't recall. Did he go to Muskegon High School?
