GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Police are calling off the search for the body of a missing two-year-old girl.

Police have been searching for Jozlynn Martinez for weeks. At first, they had hoped to find her alive, but after Jeffrey Malmberg confessed to killing the girl, police have been searching for her body.

The most recent search efforts have focused on a landfill in Kent County, where Grand Rapids Police and the FBI have spent three days sifting through garbage.

After the third day of searching that landfill, it appears the search is over, and Jozlynn's body has not been found.

Police said all along that the search at the landfill was a long shot, but there's still disappointment.

It has been a hard week for officers from the GRPD and the FBI, instead of wearing a badge and gun, they were wearing protective biohazard suits and going through potentially hazardous materials.

About two dozen workers have been going through more than fifty tons of trash, having to scoop the garbage out of the ground and then spread it out on a flat surface to allow the officers to go through it.

Jozlynn's mom loses temp custody of son
Bryan Malmberg is 7 months old

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The mom of Jozlynn Martinez, the 2-year-old girl whose body has not been found, showed poor judgment when she allowed an alleged killer to remain in her home, despite concerns he was abusing her children, the state alleged in a court document obtained Thursday by 24 Hour News 8.

Connie Martinez "was concerned that Mr. Malmberg was abusing the child, but allowed him to remain in the home," the state wrote in a petition. "She was also aware that he was using drugs and did nothing to remove him from the home."

A Kent County court referee Thursday ruled the state should have temporary custody of 7-month-old Bryan Malmberg, the son of Martinez and Malmberg.

The boy should live in foster care, under the supervision of the Department of Human Services, according to the court referee. Martinez will be allowed two hours a week of supervised visits with the boy.

The goal is eventually to return Bryan to his mother and to terminate the parental rights of Malmberg, Kent County Assistant Prosecutor Vicki Seidl said.

Until these "moms" start getting charged with endangering their kids, this will keep happening. She's responsible for putting her baby in harms way, yet, she's now going to get petted and fussed over so her living baby can be put back in her "care"....if that happens, his days are numbered. Makes me sick and furious!!:furious:

This is the problem with our social system today. Babies get abused by their parents, get taken away when it gets bad enough, and yet they somehow get them back? This is freakin ridiculous!!! Why put a child in a position like that when there are so many better places and better people who can parent that child and give them the love and attention they deserve. It makes me furious!!!! I remember when I was younger, my mother was a foster parent and we got a family of 3 kids ages 3,2, and 9 months. The 9 month old just got out of the hospital. Her dad has beat her so bad that she was in a coma. We had these beatiful, great children for over a year and then their mom got them back. And not too much longer later, we ended up getting the youngest back because AGAIN her dad beat her. Yet this time her mom got to keep the other two, and did eventually get the baby back. It happens all the damn time and we need to STOP IT! Im so sick of everyone talking about it.. lets do SOMETHING!! There has to be something... somebody has to fight for these children. If anyone knows anything that we can do, ANYTHING, please let me know. These stories bring tears to my eyes and make me soo furious!!!

I think he sold her....If he stole money from her mother,it makes me think he sold her. How much money did he have left....I think they need to question his drug buddies. It is odd that he would say did you find her body yet??? THis story is sooo odd.

I'm not buying any of this. Why would he admit to killing her so quickly with no body. You know he's heard she was probably incinerated through talk in the jail. None of this makes sense, from the Mothers comments to his. I think he sold her or something. If I was her Mother I wouldn't believe she was dead until I saw her body. She's being talked about in the past tense also. Am I missing something and they have evidence to suggest he really did kill her? This guy is a notorious liar, how could you believe him in her position? I just don't get it!

From one of the articles I read, I get the feeling that they saw him on the videos they obtained from the business where he says he dumped her body in the commercial dumpster. I've thought about the possibility of him lying about his story and that he sold her, instead, too. But I think LE might have seen something on the video that has lead them to believe that his story is true. :(

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- The family of a missing Grand Rapids girl held a vigil Saturday in her honor.

Two year old Jozlynn Martinez disappeared nearly three weeks ago and is now presumed dead.

Police looking for Jozlynn's remains ended their search at a Kent County landfill on Wednesday, after failing to find Jozlynn. The search started several weeks earlier after accused killer Jeffery Malmberg allegedly admitted to throwing her body in the trash. Evidence suggests the little girl's body may never be found.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Police in Grand Rapids are now searching the sewers for signs of a missing toddler.

Police are searching in the area where two-year-old Jozlynn Martinez lived, on Nagold Street NW.

Police say there are looking for either Jozlynn's body or evidence relating to her disappearance.

Sewers searched in Jozlynn case

Grand Rapids city workers and the Grand Rapids Police Department are searching sewers for possible clues in the murder of a girl.

A City of Grand Rapids vacuum truck, used to clean out the storm sewer, was seen probing below the grate while two members of the GRPD worked the tube.

The searches are taking place on four streets near the home where 2-year-old Jozlynn Martinez lived -- 915 Nagold St. NW. That is where she allegedly died Feb. 22. But her body has yet to be found.

Testimony: Jeffrey Malmberg bought candy, cocaine after suffocating 2-year-old Jozlynn Martinez

After suffocating his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter in what he claims was an accident born of frustration, Jeffrey Malmberg put her body in a blue garbage bag and tossed it in a Dumpster -- then stopped at a nearby convenience store for some Gummi Worms.

The detailed evidence, showing Malmberg used cocaine and marijuana and was "having a good time" in the hours after allegedly killing Jozlynn Martinez, seemed troubling for even Grand Rapids District Judge Donald Passenger at a Tuesday hearing.
