By the Associated Press • Today at 3:00 PM

STERLING HEIGHTS — An annual 5k walk in eastern Michigan is honoring a woman who was killed by her husband 10 years ago.

The 10th Tara Walk, in memory of murder victim Tara Grant, will be held Saturday in Sterling Heights, north of Detroit.

Organizers said the event raises awareness of violence in the home and kicks off Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.

Tara Grant's legacy lives 10 years after brutal murder

Sterling Heights — Ten years after her brutal murder, Tara Grant is leaving behind a legacy through her children and a story that inspires hundreds of domestic violence victims.

Tara Grant's case is still as relevant as it was a decade ago. The 34-year-old was killed by her husband in their Washington Township home in February 2007.

After their mother’s murder and father’s conviction, their two children — Lindsey and Ian — went to live with Tara’s only sibling, Alicia Standerfer in Ohio. Today, they are all thriving and working to raise awareness of domestic violence, despite their past.

Tara Grant's family returns for 11th walk in her memory

Alicia Standerfer says part of the reason she and her family return to Macomb County each year for the Tara Walk is the feedback they get.

Many people approached, thanked and embraced Standerfer and her family during the 11th, or 10th annual, Tara’s Walk at Freedom Hill County Park in Sterling Heights, held to bring awareness to domestic violence and maintain the memory of Tara Grant, 34, who was killed by her husband in 2007 in their Washington Township home.

“That’s why we come every year,” Standerfer said following another exchange with a group. “People identify with Tara’s story because she had such a normal life and it was taken away from her.”
