The prosecution plans to call nearly 70 witnesses as they work to build the murder case against Stewart.

In addition to Spencer, who is scheduled to testify on Friday, prosecutors also plan to call witnesses from an Ohio Walmart, where they believe Stewart purchased supplies to carry out the kidnapping and murder of his wife.

“In the evening of the 25th,” said McDonough, “Doug bought shovel, tarp, hat and gloves.”

Two state police officers who first responded to Venus' parents home the day she disappeared were among the first witnesses.

Trooper Aaron Steensma says the first person he saw was Venus' mother.

“She was yelling, 'he took her, he took her,'” said Trooper Steensma.

A second trooper showed jurors the plastic wrapper for a Walmart brand tarp that was found outside the Colon Township home.

Investigators say gravel in the driveway appeared to be disturbed and they found a footprint in an area near a woodpile on the property.

Prosecutor said yesterday Venus' family to testify later today.

Trooper explaining tire tracks found at one of the alleged scenes go from a dirt roadway into a grass field.

Trooper explaining how MSP measures tire tracks, creates molds of them and how they are able to figure out what vehicle made what tracks.

Defense attorney challenges trooper's testimony about tire tracks showing how/which directions a vehicle travels.

Trooper explains he used "common sense" to connect tire tracks to the route a vehicle took.

Defense attorney keeps objecting to trooper's tesitmony. about tire tracks...saying the trooper is not an expert witness.

Judge talks privately with attorneys. Then tells jury that the trooper's tesitmony is just his opinion and not expert testimony.

Trooper shows picture of the tires, and their treads, off of
DS's truck.

Prosecution finishes with trooper testimony, judge calls for break before defense cross examines the witness.

Wow! 5 different crime scenes investigated the day Venus disappeared!!!
I had not heard anything about that yet.

And that the tire tracks go from a dirt roadway into a grass field.

Wish they could find Venus.

I figured they would try to punch holes in his testimony since they already asked the judge to make it clear to the jury that Trooper Peterson is not an expert witness.

Stewart trial: crime scene tire tracks
Doug Stewart on trial for her murder

CENTREVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - The parents of Venus Stewart may testify Thursday in the murder trial of her estranged husband, Doug, accused of killing Venus last April.

Her mother, Therese McComb, and stepfather, Larry McComb , will be called by St. Joseph County prosecutor John McDonough.

Michigan State Police trooper Todd Petersen was the first witness called Thursday. For 90 minutes, the prosecution asked him about what he found in his initial investigation when Venus Stewart vanished from her parents' Colon Township driveway.

Today could be a very emotional day with Venus Stewart's parents expected to take the stand.

Tomorrow the key witness in the case, Ricky Spencer, will testify. He's the man who has admitted to pretending to be Doug Stewart back in Virginia while Doug traveled here to Michigan.

The prosecution calls him the biggest piece of the puzzle.

Thanks for all the updates, ya'll... my prayers are still with Venus' daughters and her parents!

Testimony centers on day of woman’s disappearance

Centreville, Mich. — A plastic wrapper for a tarp purchased at Walmart found in the yard and a woman’s hair-tie dropped on a sidewalk were two pieces of evidence examined closely by jurors Wednesday in the felony murder trial of Douglas Stewart.

Trooper Aaron Steensma was the first witness to be called by Prosecutor John McDonough. Steensma arrived at the home of Larry and Theresa McComb on Driftwood Drive in Colon to check a missing persons report at 9:30 a.m. April 26.
Theresa McComb, who was crying and hysterical, met Steensma in the driveway, shouting, “He took her, he took her, he took her.”
Their daughter, Venus Stewart, had apparently taken letters to the mailbox and never returned to the house.
Steensma said he looked in the mailbox and saw two letters, one addressed by Venus Stewart to the Department of Human Services in Centreville and one to the Sturgis Journal weather picture department.
He observed disturbed areas of gravel near a propane tank and what appeared to be a footprint. Steensma said he believed he had a missing persons case and began to rope off the area with yellow police tape. He radioed for backup and two K-9 units.
