Winter Weather Advisory in Metro Detroit: Several inches of snow expected

DETROIT – It’s a snowy Veteran’s Day with light to moderate snow moving at us all day today bringing several inches of snow, and some of it will be sticking to the streets.

Winter storm on Monday
Most of Metro Detroit is in a Winter Weather Advisory for 3-6” of snow creating dangerous travel all day today and it lasts until midnight. Parts of the Thumb in our North Zone are under a Winter Storm Warning for 5-10” of snow and blowing snow...

We got at least 8" of snow yesterday in Rochester Hills. DH couldn't make it up the driveway and parked his car in front of the house until he cleared half the driveway. That took an hour. He came in for dinner and Jeopardy! then went back out for another hour to finish driveway and steps. I hope this isn't a signal that we're going to have major snowfall throughout the winter  Most schools are closed today - seems early for snow days. On a positive note, sun is shining, and the snow looks beautiful on trees.

Updated snow totals around Metro Detroit for Veterans Day storm

Many areas see 8+ inches

Monday’s snowstorm dumped plenty of snow on Metro Detroit -- nearly 10 inches in some spots.

Many areas saw more than 7 inches of snow. These are totals reported to the National Weather Service. If you don’t see your city below, it’s because they haven’t gotten an official measurement...

DETROIT – If you’re planning on traveling in the state on Wednesday, ahead of Thanksgiving, you’re in for a treat.

8 inches in Twin Cities southern suburb. Strong, cold winds. Schools closed today, flights cancelled, retail stores open. Heard over 300 accidents. Freeways very slow going. Wet, heavy snow. Everyone is digging out.

Winter outlook: Average temperatures, near normal precipitation

Winter is expected to be slightly warmer than usual, with less snow than normal, forecasts by the local National Weather Service office say.

That means the polar vortex that dipped the Plains and Great Lakes regions into a deep freeze from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1 is less likely to repeat in 2020. A low of minus 14 on Jan. 31 broke the record for Detroit's coldest ever on that date.

Michiganians who doubt the weather service's prognostication could rely on the "The Old Farmers Almanac," which calls for seven big snowstorms this winter across the continental U.S., including Michigan.

So far, snowfall in December has been below normal, with 0.8 inches through Dec. 20, according to the weather service. Typically, Detroit receives 9.7 inches of snow in December...

Parts of Iowa and Illinois, along the Mississippi River, are about to get hit with two storms beginning tonight. First, an ice storm Friday night through Saturday morning, followed by a snow storm Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. More minor snow will follow Sunday night. We will have to chisel our way out, I’m afraid.
