Derek Chauvin trial judge slams Maxine Waters' inflammatory comments

"And now that we have [a] U.S. representative … threatening acts of violence in relation to this specific case, it's it's mind boggling to me to have," Attorney Eric Nelson said, as he attempted to argue that the jury may have been unduly influenced by external factors.

Judge Peter Cahill said that he wished elected officials would stop referencing the case "especially in a manner that is disrespectful to the rule of law" so as to let the judicial process play out as intended.

The judge underestimated the massive attention paid to this trial. I moderate an unrelated forum where we've had 1000's of posts about this case. Probably the biggest unrelated topic in our 20 year history. It's crazy...
The entire country was in the streets after the murder. I think there were protests in all 50 states, iirc. I don't think the judge underestimated the attention as it affected the nation, but I think his instructions to the jury could have been stronger. We don't know, however, that the jury exposed itself to anything that would taint the decision-making process.

Nelson's farfetched interpretation of what Waters said is disgusting...

Many a case a Juror has been subjected to facts video etc. prior to being picked. They are asked if they can put that aside if chosen and base a verdict solely on what is presented in Court. If this Jury is honest and they heard a snippet but removed themselves or the source and base verdict on what was presented then that's good enough for me. Such a social media driven society it's hard to avoid it 100%. It may be grounds for an Appeal but doesn't mean it will fly.
I agree.
In respect to what Ms. Waters said publicly, even if they inadvertently heard it, the jurors do have instructions they must follow. Part of them being:

"During your deliberations, you must not let bias, prejudice, passion, sympathy, or public opinion influence your decision. You must not consider any consequences or penalties that might follow from your verdict. You must not be biased in favor of or against any party or witness because of his or her disability, gender, race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, or socioeconomic status.
Your verdict must be based solely on the evidence presented and the law that give you. Your like or dislike of any Witness, attorney or party should not have an effect on the outcome of this case. The State of Minnesota and the Defendant have right to demand, and do demand, that you will consider and weigh the evidence, apply the law, and reach just verdict, regardless of what the consequences might be. You must be absolutely fair. Remember that it is fair to find the Defendant guilty if the evidence and the law require it. On the other hand, it is fair to find the Defendant not guilty if you are not convinced of his guilt beyond reasonable doubt."

I agree. I am still trusting the jury until there is reason not to.

Folks no matter what walk of life they step in are entitled to voice opinions. Some just have better platforms for freedom of speech. I do understand the weight of this Trial as the world watches but I do trust most Jurors who are willing to give up daily life will render a verdict based on the facts. IMO

I assume these are the shows Nelson mentioned.
One hasn’t aired yet.

Moments after jurors went into deliberation, defense attorney Eric Nelson pleaded with Judge Peter Cahill to declare a mistrial, pointing to the “public context” and “profound” media attention of the trial, including criticisms from Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) and television shows.
Chauvin Jury Gets Case After Day of Emotional Closing Arguments

Winston on the phone. The man is shaken up. Like, visibly shaking. He tells her that he was pulled over because his bike rack was obstructing his license plate and then they got a look at who was driving and “it turned into one of those things.” They made him get out of the car and they searched through all of his things, tossing it all out on the road to go through it, to have their dog sniff it, to have their dog sniff him. He is beside himself and he doesn’t know how he can get back in the car and drive. Maggie tells him she’ll stay on the phone with him for as long as he needs. She waits for him outside of her house and when he finally pulls up, they hold each other. It’s a tiny bit of relief.
Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Scarred

In season 4 episode 11 – titled ‘Here It Comes Again’ – we finally witness the Station 19 team’s reaction to the death of George Floyd.
The camera focuses not on their verbal response, but rather their shocked faces as they witness the footage which shook the world. On May 25th 2020, 46-year-old George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota while being arrested on suspicion of using a counterfeit bill.
Although the scene may have been interpreted as a simple acknowledgement of this important real-life case, the promo for episode 12 – ‘Get Up, Stand Up’ – suggests that subsequent episodes will be shaped by George’s passing.
Airing on Thursday, April 22nd, the episode will see Maya bring in a grief counselor: “There has been a death and we’re all grieving so I asked her to come”.

This might be a good time to restock up on toilet paper. :D

For real though, this is heavy. It’s going to feel like an eternity waiting on the verdict.

Eta: More importantly, how will people react to this verdict, whatever it may be.

If even one juror, who may a have leaned towards voting not guilty, inadvertently read or heard Maxine Waters abhorrent statement demanding a guilty verdict, it would not be fair to the defendant. JMO
But we have no facts at this time that they did.I'm sure they will be asked about it after the trial.

My greatest hope is that we talk about Mr. Floyd and this trial ---leaving the politicians of any stripe out of this. (I really don't want this thread to get shut down.) Mr. Floyd and his family have been forever altered. This defendant is on trial for his actions.

So you think tonight? Wow...that would be fast... Guilty or Not Guilty?

Why is the jury sequestered now that they are deliberating? Couldn't judge tell them to just avoid the news.

There's no reason to think that if they inadvertently hear something related to the trial that it would affect them. JMO

I agree. A lot of OT discussions happening here not relevant to the specifics of this trial.
