Been following here since the story broke. So sad, and confusing. RIP to the deceased.
I must admit, that the toxicology report will give the most answers, and that I am heavily leaning towards additional chemical components. Fentanyl OD is strongly on my suspicious list.
Another very strong possibility IMO, is the more recent street drug problem, "tranq". Or, xylazine. This drug can produce
"zombie" like effects. Videos can be seen all over about the drug and it's effects in Philadelphia, of people slumped over and unable to stand upright or ambulate.

From Google search:
xylazine

Since 2021, Kensington, a low-income neighborhood in North Philadelphia, has been ground zero for a new and dangerous sedative called “tranq”. Also known as “xylazine”, a side-effect of this drug can be struggling to stand upright, which is why users are commonly described in the media as “zombies”.Dec 18, 2023 "

"What is xylazine used for?

It is used on many different animal species such as cattle, sheep, horses, dogs, cats, deer, rats, and elk to calm and facilitate handling, perform diagnostic and surgical procedures, relieve pain, or act as a local anesthetic. "
‘Tranq tourism’: alarm in Philadelphia as TikTokers travel to film drug users

What if?? These guys partook in taking 'tranq' ( ingested, inhaled or smoked ), hoping for the sedative effect, and instead were overcome with the paralyzing effects? They might have gone outside to get some fresh air and wake their bodies up? Instead, they were all 3 rendered slumped over, unable to stand or walk, and succumbed to hypothermia.
JW ?? Said no, I will just stay slumped over here on my couch...and passed out.

MOO
Omg, I’ve never heard of that.
Or, what if he took it first, passed out hard and fast , and they said, we have to get outside for some fresh air, hoping to avoid that same reaction to the drug.

I still don't understand. So, JW missed two days of work? A lot of employers would have sounded the alarm part way through the second day by contacting an emergency contact. MOO
Apparently he worked from home, but it sounds odd, since even if you are smart working your colleagues have to know that you have clocked in. It made me suspicious too, but maybe it was a normal behaviour for him.

Moo... I believe that the different views of what happened and the responses and responsibility of people involved. I can definitely ignore the world for 3 days, and as much as I care for people, I am not responsible for their choices, and I do not get involved in family or personal drama. From the little I know about his work, he was apparently working from home, and had his own business (perhaps on contract) so assumedly he could make his own hours??? As a research scientist, I imagine he could work when he wanted/needed to, so long as he got his work completed to deadline. MOO.

Yes, it was stated that he worked from home; but I was wondering about interactions with colleagues ?
Did any of them notice he wasn't logging into work remotely ?

This brings to mind a scientific test I did at uni many, many years ago. My project involved testing people drinking alcohol in the cold. The uni I went to had a cold weather-controlled chamber. I provided alcohol to some subjects and non-alcohol to others as they exercised on a bike. The alcohol-drinking group had warmer superficial temperatures and 'felt' warmer, but their core temperatures were very much lower.

Conclusion: If you are drinking you don't feel the cold as much but your body may be suffering.

P.S. The test I did was 40 years ago. The paper was published by a group that did research on alcoholism.
PPS: Yes, I am old!

The Mythbusters matched your result:

Hello, Thanks for the Welcome!! I was wondering too, since it’s odd that a person does not work on a Monday, but I couldn’t find anything.

If they did, he has family close. Would he have answered the door for them? I keep thinking about his first accounts in which his lawyer stated that he left a couple times or a few times briefly??
I wonder if it was to take the dogs? I can not stop thinking the answer to the dogs being where and when will answer many questions to if he was aware and tried to cover himself.

Nah, you're not old. You're just getting started, and the best is always yet to come!

Nothing is going to convince me, that the home owner slept for two solid days on the couch with headphones and a loud fan on (who turns on a fan on a snowy day?). And he did not realize that he reportedly had multiple texts and messages. and that he did not hear multiple people banging down his door to get in. MOO
Per JWs attorney ....JW slept part of Monday, worked that evening and Tues. He works from home.

The messages were through Facebook Messenger. JW did not use his phone Mon or Tues per his attorney. He did not see the message.

As for banging on the door the house is huge, two levels on the opposite side of the door.

Side note, not one family reported missing to LE, when these men didn't come come Sun, Mon, or Tues night. A fiance, broke into the basement, rather than call LE., around 9PM Tues night. ODD behavior, moo.

Moo...

When I get off work on Friday I stay in bed until work again Monday morning. I sleep most the time, watch some tv, read on my phone. I only get up to go to the restroom or get something to eat. I also sleep with a fan on every night of the year. Personally, I don't find any of the resident's behavior unusual.

Similar to the Nathan Millard case, people have a hard time believing that "normal" every day people occasionally partake in drug use. People who use cocaine recreationally used to be able to keep that part of their lives hidden, but fentanyl being cut into cocaine has exposed recreational users through overdoses. The fact that some would think cyanide or murder over a fentanyl overdose shows me that we, as a country, are still not getting the message out about how dangerous and prevalent, even recreational drug use, has become. Fentanyl overdose are now the leading cause of deaths for people age 18-45. All my opinion.
Eta link.

JW is a well respected, well known, and published research scientist (PHD). He works from home analyzing data, comparison for an HIV vaccine trial.

The others had full time jobs, not sure if their employers reported them missing. The families never reported them missing, when they did not return home Sun night, Mon or Tues.

moo.
I wondered if the dogs were at his parents because the house was a rental. They are large dogs.

The back yard is huge and fully fenced, a large family room on the ground floor has French doors opening to the back yard, and a door from the garage, also.

Letting the dogs out would be very easy and safe, with the 6 ft wooden fence.

I am trying to think of all the possibilities that #4 did not have any idea something took place but he was up a few times and people check their phones religiously and out of habit. He had to have seen all the texts or calls.
I can not think of a logical reason he did not check his phone. He would have needed to charge it.

What strikes me is the contrast between #5 and JW answers on some things. Why would a friend lie about some details regarding that night (e.g. the dogs)? Just that JW would take all the blame for the drugs?
Where do you watch the discrepancies between #5 and #4?

I am wondering if maybe the dogs were there earlier in the evening and got picked up by the Dad? Maybe #5 did see them but only at the beginning. So maybe they are both telling the truth?

MOO.

This. I was in the middle of formulating this thought and you said it so well.
It's easy to transfer my own experiences and those around me. I can only say reading some posts is like watching someone see crowds awake after their own bedtime.

found it interesting to watch Banfield's interview with David Harrington's mother. His mother talked about speaking with two detectives. She stated that the first officer told her that JW's story added up and the detective said, "I'm not really allowed to go into very much but ... when it's all released, it's going to make sense."

I wasn't able to access the interview. What is the last few sentences about two weeks later?

She then called back a couple weeks later because it didn't sit right and she got more of an answer that she wanted/needed to hear imo (which was basically that they were still investigating).
