do you think she may still be with him?????

maybe she is enjoying her time with him..........especially if she has been lonely...

and no I dont mean in a sexual way or anything.....eeewwwkk......but just being out and about.....I have no doubt that this man is bleeding her dry though and using her for money be it at casinos, restaurants, gifts etc.......

I really hope he hasnt killed her.....

one thing is if she is listed as missing and has seen it, you would think she would have contacted the police.......I am concerned that he is indeed holding her against her will and forcing her to withdraw/spend money....

I read another local story that said that she'd been depressed and lonely since her husband died five years ago. Also said that this man told her that he had cancer and no family, really played on her sympathy.

Sadly, I don't think that she's alive, although I hope she is. I would guess that he had her withdraw as much as she could at the Riverwalk in Vicksburg...the casino. Then, sad to say, as tiny as she is and as big as he is...he could have done anything to her.

So sad--poor woman threw caution to the wind for a little companionship. :(

Close to me too, and it is really scary that we didn't hear about this until today. The agency in her hometown is very good, I am hoping that they know more than they are letting on. Bless her heart, I'm with ms_writer..hopefully she is off having fun and has lost track of time.

Two possibilities.

They/he may be at Pearl River Resort Casinos in Choctaw. Or they/he may be at any of the many casinos on the coast.

With Pearl being east of I-55, and with him heading east, he's either in the eastern part of the state (Meridian) or the southern part of the state. From Pearl, he could be in Hattiesburg, Meridian, or Biloxi, or, like you said, mswriter, Alabama.

Then there's Louisiana...New Orleans is only a hop, skip, jump from Biloxi.

I really really doubt that he's still with her. If he left Vicksburg with her, then the roads between Vicksburg and Jackson are so rural.... she could be anywhere. And Vicksburg is on the Mississippi River, too. Not good for her.

She is such a remarkable looking woman that, if she's with him, someone will see her.

Just my opinion, but if they were headed to points south, then they would have probably taken I-55 south (to New Orleans) or Hwy 49 (to Biloxi). But they had passed those interchanges by the time they were in Pearl. Same with headed to the Choctaw casinos: I think they would have taken I-220 to I-49 north, also at Jackson.

Agree totally about the area between Vicksburg and Clinton. A disproportionate number of human remains are found in western Hinds county, around Bolton.

Also totally agree that she is memorable looking, and would be spotted easily -- IF people in the right area know to be looking. I pray that's so.

Updated story

The high points:

U.S. Marshalls are involved in the search because an unregistered sex offender crossed state lines. That's good; the more LE agencies, the better.

AND

LE will not comment on whether her ATM or credit cards have been used. That's a biggie to me.

I've been wondering about the ATM and credit cards as well. Was there alot of activity then suddenly stopped? Sadly I think if there was still financial activity going on LE would basically be a step behind them as of yesterday. Maybe they are and are being tight lipped.

We are praying for you Ethel!

ITA. If there was activity, then they know exactly where to search. I wonder if he didn't clean her out, at Vickburg or shortly after, and then hightail it out of state. Alone. :(

What's odd is the case of Mary O'Hagan-78yo from MS. She went missing on Sept 9th. LE won't say why, but they immediately pulled out all of the stops and treated this as an abduction.

The only reason I'm posting this is on the off chance that maybe they are connected.

Oh, dear. I had read about that case (on another site, I think) but never thought about a connection. Ugh. One thing, did you mean Ms. O'Hagan was from Mississippi (MS?)? I thought she was from Vermont via Massachusetts (MA). Just wondering if it was a state abbreviation mix-up (totally understandable with all the "M" states!) or if there was a Mississippi connection I was missing. Thanks!

There are similarities between the two women for sure. Both were very attractive, and described as vibrant, active and independent.

I meant Vermont. Thanks for catching that!

Here's the good news:

CLINTON, MS (WLBT) - James Cobb Hutto, 39, was arrested Friday by sheriff's deputies in Lee County, Alabama.

Here's the bad news:

Clinton Police Chief Don Byington says Hutto was spotted in Simpson's car Friday in Alabama. Byington has officers on their way to Alabama. He says there was no sign of Simpson.

A 39-year-old convicted sex offender sought in the disappearance of an 81-year-old Clinton woman was apprehended Friday in Alabama — but did not have the missing woman with him.

James Cobb Hutto, whose last address is a home in Jasper, Ala., was taken into custody by Lee County, Ala., authorities at about 11:30 a.m., said Clinton Police Chief Don Byington.

He was driving the 2002 silver Mercedes belonging to Ethel Winstead Simpson of Clinton, who voluntarily left the Baptist Healthplex in Clinton Monday afternoon with him.

“Mrs. Simpson was not with him,” Byington said. “We have investigators en route.”

The chief said he has no further information concerning Simpson’s whereabouts. Lee County is part of the Auburn, Ala., metropolitan area.

That's just so not what I wanted to hear. I'm going to hold out hope that he dropped her off, but if she hasn't called, either from her cell or other phone, this is really sad. Her picture and the description of what a lively person she is just grabbed me, and I really hope there's a happy ending.

A 39-year-old convicted sex offender sought in the disappearance of an elderly Clinton woman is in custody in Alabama, charged today with the attempted murder and robbery of an Opelika man. When Lee County, Ala., authorities this morning pulled over the vehicle driven by James Cobb Hutto, 81-year-old Ethel Winstead Simpson was not with him.

And, Lee County authorities say, Birmingham police suspect Hutto may be involved in the death of a Birmingham woman who was discovered at her home on Thursday morning.

That woman is one of Hutto’s relatives, said Lee County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Van Jackson.

All of this AFTER Ethel Simpson went missing... :(

ETA: sorry - title should read "for attempted murder" not "to attempted murder"

Heard on the news that he stabbed the person in the attempted murder case.

I'm going to look at the timeline so far and see if we can identify how far off I-20 he might have traveled to dispose of Ethel.

Ok--timeline:

11:40 - Ethel last seen leaving Riverwalk with James.

3:05 - Ethel's car passes through Pearl MS on I-20.

I've made that drive numerous times. Even during daytime when there's much more traffic, you can easily go from Vicksburg to Pearl in an hour. But at night, when there's hardly any traffic, you could do it in 45 minutes if driving the speed limit, and even quicker if you're traveling above the speed limit.

From the time that Ethel was last seen leaving the casino until the car passed through Pearl, we're looking at 3 hours and 25 minutes.

Subtract 45 minutes travel time, and we're looking at 2 hours and 40 minutes.

So what did James do for two hours and 40 minutes?

I hate to say this, but this indicates that she could be ANYWHERE in west central Mississippi or even east central Louisiana. I do think she'll be found soon, though, because people are out walking deer leases, and every inch of rural ground is walked in Mississippi during dear season. Unless she's in the river, and I've read before that there's a 50 percent chance that any body placed in the river in Vicksburg will make it to the Gulf of Mexico without snagging on the river shore.

In Vicksburg and at many points north and south of Vicksburg, there are many places that one has access right down to the river's edge. Boat ramps, as well as terrain where you can walk right down to the river.
