The link doesn't work for me so I searched both "Selina" and "Selena" but didn't get a result. Maybe they are updating? Can someone else try it? TIA

I just tried again to access it. You guys are correct - I get a "page not found" message.

I've had this problem before when trying to link to NamUs. I wonder if they take these pages off-site to update them - not sure.

Sorry!

ETA: @carbuff : You may be correct - perhaps the page can only be viewed by LE.

I will start by saying that I live on a reservation in Montana. I am a parent to a 12 year old daughter who is an enrolled member of our tribe. I am so thankful this case is getting the attention it deserves!! There has been so so many....Ashley Loring HeavyRunner, Henny Died, Kaysara Stops....that's just off the top of my head. HT is a genuine concern, but the "outside world" genuinely has little clue as to just how entirely rough life can be for these young kids on the reservation. Example---a teacher once had kids write a "what did you do last summer" paper==(these were 11th graders). One told a story of a 4o year old woman who was gang raped at a party and in the paper stated "the ***** deserved it....she shouldn't have been at the party in the fist place". People are quiet when it comes to their own family members who are accused monsters. Someone above stated that when the feds show up, people shut up. This, unfortunately, is true. Tribal police are usually hands of the tribal council.....if it's their relatives or someone they love that is the accused, little is done. Cops involved romantically with suspects can really damage an investigation. There is no agreement between state/local police and the feds (IE the BIA). No databases that talk to one another, ect. Each reservation is it's own sovereign nation with their own tribal laws and codes. This is where the problem lies, and this is where the #MMIW problem needs to start to be corrected. There are also steps to prevent these horrible things from happening. If a young 13-17 year old girl is in a town over 50 miles away with young men who are in their 20's bad things can happen. This is not victim blaming, this is not parent blaming, but somewhere along the line someone, somewhere has failed this young lady terribly. My daughter will NEVER, and I mean N E V E R be in this kind of situation. Young people hitchhiking at night is probably not a good idea. We, as parents, have to know where our children are....at all times, period. They should not be "swooped" by friends to go to a basketball tournament over 100 miles away if we do not know who these friends are, what time will they be home, ect.
But---I digress....I could go on and on, my apologies. This family has suffered so much, I really hope their baby comes home soon. :(
Liking your post doesn’t adequately reveal my gratitude for your personal share. As a Native American of Cherokee/Choctaw heritage, I’m proud of you. Way to represent! Thanks.

For a moment I wondered if she had been found. Wishful thinking! MOO

A Sheridan Travel and Tourism employee claims she saw someone resembling missing 16-year-old Selena Not Afraid at the Sheridan Information Center and Rest Area Monday.

The STT employee, Bailey McLean, said a girl came in to use the restroom Monday who resembled Not Afraid based on photos McLean had seen on social media. She was wearing a gray sweater, blue jeans and Ugg-style boots.

McLean said the girl did not appear to be in distress and left toward Sheridan in a black Nissan Pathfinder with a man in his 20s with red, curly hair.
Potential sighting for missing Montana teen

It would be great if this siting leads to Selina!

Fingers crossed.

The news reports do not seem to be giving a very good description of where Selina was last seen. The rest area is commonly called Fly Creek Rest Stop, but is indexed in Google maps as " Rest Area Christiansen-Graham". The map posted is a screenshot from Google Maps and Directions, and the first link should reactivate it.
There is a Screenshot taken from Google Earth Street View, taken from the point where the return ramp of the rest area rejoins the eastbound right lane of Interstate 90, and looking southeasterly across an area referred to by Big Horn County Sheriff Lawrence C. Big Hair as "the washouts". Her route would have taken her five miles to the former US Highway 87, locally called "Old Hardin Road". From there, it would have been a seventeen mile walk to the outskirts of Hardin, but she could walk parallel to the roadway, some distance from it. The area from the rest stop to the roadway was searched very early by six experienced horsemen.

FBI issues BOLO for missing Hardin girl
[...]

The FBI has been involved since the start of the search, according to spokesperson Sandra Barker. But Wednesday marked the first involvement of a special "child abduction" team. Local law enforcement asked for the team's help Tuesday.

The CARD team is a group of specialized investigators working from the sight of an abduction, often with behavioral analysis experts and technical specialists, according to the FBI.

Speaking Wednesday Big Horn County Sheriff Lawrence Big Hair said the FBI had set up a command center at the Big Horn County Courthouse, which also houses the sheriff's office. The sheriff's office is the lead investigating agency.

Searches at the rest area that began hours after she went missing have continued daily. Wednesday both volunteers and law enforcement searched areas south and southeast of the rest stop, Big Hair said. ...

@Dave F. : Thanks for posting this.

The BOLO, which stands for "be on the lookout," was issued just after 4 p.m. on Wednesday by the FBI and asked for the public's help in finding Selena Shelley Faye Not Afraid.

It's the first official alert since a Missing and Endangered Persons Advisory was issued for Selena on New Year's Day, hours after she was last seen.

"Selena's direction of travel is unknown, but (she) may be in Big Horn, Yellowstone, Rosebud and Treasure counties," according to the FBI's alert.

Law enforcement officers are looking for a green Subaru, possibly a Forester, with Wyoming plates that was seen at the closed rest stop Wednesday.

Neither Big Hair nor Undersheriff Eric Winburn would say what new resources the FBI had provided. Windburn said the FBI team would help organize and regroup the investigation but declined to comment on what the next moves in the investigation would be.

Wednesday both volunteers and law enforcement searched areas south and southeast of the rest stop, Big Hair said. Searches have been conducted on foot, horseback and ATVs; and with helicopters, thermal drones and K-9 units.

The Billings Gazette has continued to examine one of the most urgent issues in Montana and our region — missing and murdered indigenous women and girls.

In Montana, Native Americans are just 6.7% of the total population, but make up 26% of missing persons cases.

The problem has persisted for generations, and many of the cases remain unsolved. The causes are numerous and complex, and any lasting solutions have been elusive.

The Gazette is exploring the reasons the crisis has persisted and what can be done about it.

And, we need your help. We welcome your tips, suggestions and feedback at billingsgazette.com/mmiwtips.

Did the newspaper say that CARD stood for Crime Reduction Rapid Deployment? It’s the Child Abduction Rapid Deployment, so I’m curious if newspaper was confused.

This is all sounding terribly suspicious.

Selena is a junior at Hardin High. Posters made by some of the high school students were hung on the chain link fence near the rest stop, many expressing ‘Hope 4 Sal.’ Another read ‘Her life matters.’

The "#hope4sal" hashtag has been circulating amid concerted social media efforts to find Selena and spread news of her disappearance to other states.

"It felt so good," said Selena's aunt, Cheryl Horn, of the Hardin students. "We needed those kids and their vibes. We need them to see this too."

Horn and other family members have been at the rest stop night and day since Selena was reported missing. There, kids heard about the severity of running away, and officials stressed they should be diligent and safety-oriented, Horn said. Horn said Selena wasn't a partier, leading her to believe someone took advantage of the teen.

Police are also continuing to investigate the Billings house where Selena apparently attended a New Year’s Eve party the night before her disappearance.

The sheriff was optimistic the arrival of the federal Child Abduction Rapid Deployment team would lead to new discoveries.

FBI spokesperson Sandra Barker confirmed the FBI was sending additional resources, but couldn’t comment more specifically, she said. The FBI has been assisting from the beginning of the search, she said.

As searchers continued to comb the area near the rest stop, flyers and Facebook and social media posts have spread quickly, much of it pushed by Selena’s family.

“It’s up to the family, and it’s not to pass out one flyer; it’s to pass out 100,” said Horn, Selena's aunt.

“I’ve scrolled past many faces, when Selena went missing I thought, ‘I can’t let them forget her face,’” she said, adding that missing person posters coming across her Facebook feed have become all too common.

“Whoever it is, we’re putting the pressure on, and they need to let her go,” Horn said. The response from Montana and out of state has been “outrageous,” Horn said.

People have reached out from all across Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas — and farther — to express support, offer a prayers or share a poster of Selena. Horn wanted to express thanks from Selena's family to everyone who has searched, volunteered, donated food and everything in between.

Horn said she thinks the family’s social media push, and the public pressure on law enforcement, has been one reason officials have rushed to search for the girl. A search was mounted the same day Selena went missing, and a Missing and Endangered Persons Advisory was issued for the girl Wednesday.

“I hate to say it but that’s how it has to be (to get law enforcement involved). The family has to be aggressive. We’re not going to be quiet,” she said.

Law enforcement has been criticized for not taking Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women cases seriously enough in the past, leading to preventable deaths or no arrests and charges. Native Americans go missing or are murdered at a higher rate than their non-Native counterparts.

Horn is optimistic that Selena will be found safe, especially with the response of law enforcement. Friends and family will not give up, she said.

"She knows we’re here. She knows I won’t quit and her mom won’t quit," Horn said. "She doesn’t know where we're at or what we’re doing. But, I’m being loud. We’re going to find her. I’m positive."

Complete coverage: The search for Selena Not Afraid

Selena Not Afraid, 16, was last seen on January 1 at a rest area between Billings and Hardin along Interstate 90 in Montana. According to the Billings Gazette, people who had been driving Selena home after a New Year’s Eve party told police that they left her at the rest stop after the van they were driving broke down, but reportedly later restarted.

Selena is a student at Hardin High school and a member of the Crow Nation. Her relationship to the people who were driving her on January 1 is not known.

According to USA Today, multiple agencies have joined in the search, including the FBI’s specially trained child abduction team.

Her high school came in to support the search, and students gathered. In the area and brought posters with Selena’s name on it, which says, “Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. According to the sources, Selena is a member of an organization, “The Crow Nation,” and people from the organization have started collecting money for the search.

According to the data done in 2018, The Associated Press found 633 indigenous women made up of 0.7% of open missing person cases despite being 0.4% of the U.S. population.
Congress is helping the police in search and is gathering more data and information, which may help in finding Selena. The agency is doing everything to find Selena and has been making efforts seeing her with helicopters, drones, and even K-9 units.

The first acronym would be CRRD instead of CARD, so they really got it messed up.

Sorry. My bad. The Gazette has completely revised their article, while leaving the link the same. It didn't seem right as I composed the post, so I went to the official FBI website and searched for "C.A.R.D." and got nothing. I then searched for "CARD" and got an endless string of hits on cases related to credit card crime, so I went with the Gazette tag. The important point, though, is that those FBI folks are now on the ground and leading the search. IMO
