College Admissions Scandal: Elisabeth Kimmel among 16 parents indicted by federal grand jury with money laundering

You do such a great job keeping us up-to-date on the entire case (when it's so easy to focus just on Lori).

Thanks!

I think Felicity gave the best possible statement, admitting guilt, saying she was ashamed, etc. Humility and at least acting humble, full of regret, ashamed, will go a lot further in rehabilitating her image than Lori's perky yoga mom shopping outings and shaking the prosecutor's hands like she's at an autograph signing. She's also smart to do this early on before it drags on and on, taking a plea instead of going to trial, having even more details and dirty laundry aired, etc.

I heard an attorney this morning say that LL going over and shaking the prosecutors’ hands was completely out of decorum in a courtroom. She hurt herself doing that. IMO

Hmm....your post makes me wonder if Lori and Mossimo pushed college not for the educational or even social value, but because it meant lucrative sponsorships from companies who wanted to reach college-aged consumers. I had not thought of that before.

This is what keeps coming back to me about Lori & Mossimo and OJ's vlog success

The epitomy of internet influencer / Vlog stuff for young women is the massive success of Kylie Jenner's makeup line. $1 BILLION is what "she" (meaning her product line) is what is touted in the entertainment and other media.

Look, if Kylie Jenner can do this, certainly another young woman with the right promotions and connections can do this too. ( You don't think Kylie Jenner did this by herself - this was her mother-manager and other promotion specialists who did this. Kylie seems even more hapless than OJ, but she's got a continuous feed via the PR and media)

So, why not OJ? Her father developed the Mossimo line from socal surfer wear into a $50 million business that was sold to Target. He knows the business. Her parents are very much invested in OJ as a business, as well as a child (I hope!).

She gets a degree from the prestigious university that is also full of the wealthy offspring of real billionaires. They got her the Amazon dorm stuff promotion, didn't they? They can pose her as the "educated" influencer. Her dad is schmoozing with a football Hall-of-Famer who just happens to be the USC Athletic Director ( for a while, he is proving completely inept at the job). Do you actually think Lynn Swann is going to question the athletic credentials of women's crew members?

She wanted only to party and do the tailgating stuff at ASU. Do you think that is going to get her vlog anywhere? Not big contacts for the parents at ASU.

Her parents clearly don't give a rat's azz about scholarship. They let her go to Fiji for a Vlog project the first week of school. It's not like she's a top model who has to be in NY Fashion Week for her career. They just don't care about the substance of her education. It's just for the veneer of quality, when they themselves are overschmoozing the business and social contacts her schooling allows.

I truly understand the disappointment and anger people feel towards those charged in this scheme. However, I think Singer should be “hit in the head with a two-by-four” for encouraging these people and setting this up.

How did all these people find Singer, or how did Singer find all these people?

Was it all word-of-mouth?

And how many other people knew this was going on that turned it down?

He was a coach turned college counseling person. It appears he started in Sacramento and was intense as well as ambitious. Then, he got some high profile clients like Joe Montana and Phil Mickelson (not named and vehemently deny any wrong doing) and you begin to have clout and your circle widens.

Lawyers for Silicon Valley investor William McGlashan, who was indicted alongside other parents Tuesday, say they "look forward to presenting his side of the story." McGlashan is accused of paying Singer $50,000 for test cheating and for agreeing to pay another $250,000 to get his son into the University of Southern California as a football recruit. Prosecutors say that McGlashan did not end up following through with the latter bribe. "The prosecutor’s case against Mr. McGlashan is deeply flawed and ignores important exculpatory facts," one of his lawyers said.

While Olivia Jade and her sister Isabella have reportedly not been attending classes since the scandal broke, USC is not letting them withdraw. "USC has placed holds on the accounts of students who may be associated with the alleged admissions scheme," the college said. "This prevents the students from registering for classes (until they have agreed to participate in the review of their case), withdrawing from the university, or acquiring transcripts while their cases are under review. Among many factors investigators could consider in reviewing each case are any developments in the criminal cases, including plea deals by parents. Following these case-by-case reviews, we will take the proper action related to each student’s status, up to revoking admission or expulsion."

My point was that the public take Lori's crimes more personally than the crimes Martha committed. My apologies for not understanding Martha's crimes (which kind of is my point). And, yes, what Martha did was illegal and it got her a jail sentence, and she rebounded. There's a difference between Martha and Lori and between their crimes - in the public eyes. In my opinion.

I don't think anyone on WS condones any crime or thinks any crime is acceptable.
I understand your point. :) I actually do take Martha Stewart's offenses personally as my husband and I are big investors in the stock market.

We are also college graduates. So, I take offense to those crimes, too.

I guess that I am from the old school where I believe that you should work hard, sacrifice and not lie, cheat or steal, if at all possible. ;)

BTW - If you read up on Martha Stewart, she committed many more crimes than just lying. She had her assistant claim all of her vacations as business trips, IIRC.

What I don't get is she is uber rich and still that isn't enough for her.

I mean, I know that she isn't the only one doing it. I just find it very sad. When is enough money enough?

"The love of money is the root of all evil."

Well this guy involved is just a real piece of work:
Bloomberg - Are you a robot?

...”convicted Friday of running an 18-year, $1.3 billion health-care fraud that prosecutors called the largest such scheme ever charged...”

...”also used some of the proceeds from the fraud to bribe the University of Pennsylvania basketball coach to help get his son into the school, prosecutors said. The coach pleaded guilty to money laundering last year in connection with the case...”

(Sorry if this has already been posted.)

But really, he ran the fraud for 18 years?!

Life behind bars for Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman will be 'traumatizing,' experts say

It looks like Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman will at least be doing some time in federal prison for their parts in this college admissions scandal. And while the public generally has the perception that it will be a walk in the park for the celebrities, experts — including one who has served time in federal prison — say that’s just not true.

Huffman’s plea deal reportedly stipulates some prison time (the federal guidelines suggest in the zero to six month range) and Loughlin, who shunned a deal only to be slapped with an additional charge, faces around five years, a legal expert says.
