Former competitive rowers speak out about college bribery scandal | Daily Mail Online

Former competitive rowers speak out about how Olivia Jade claimed to be part of an LA rowing club that didn't exist  while real estate developer's daughter pretended to be on their elite California team but didn't know what type of boat they used..o_O

Team must exist and know your boat!

A Beginner's Guide to Rowing Crew - RowingReviews.com
I’m glad these ladies are speaking out. The college age cheaters (not the innocent ones with fraudulent parents) need to experience some of the outrage from their peers- the ones they hurt. My son rowed crew soph-sr year. Fall & spring seasons. Those kids were up at 4:30AM BEFORE school 5 days a week to be on the lake by 5:15. Row for an hour, rain or shine, cold or hot. Be at school by 7AM. Then train Saturdays too- unless that weekend was a regatta. Incredible discipline- these rowers. That newly released rowing resume has got to really piss off crew members who actually have done the work she photoshopped.

I was researching rowing and there is so much that goes into it and to learn that it boggles the mind that the whole family just pretends the girls are experienced competitive rowers having advanced to the leadership roll of a coxswain who steers and leads the boat.

They don't have to endure it when it is grueling physically and mentally, they don't have to learn any technical skills, self dicipline, being team players, gaining valuable leadership skills and so much more. They can just do the fake resume thing and bypass it all, life is a piece of cake, sweating is for shmucks.

Yes! And besides learning all those terms & teamwork, they have to be able to read the water and weather. My son trained on a lake, but some of the regattas were held in ocean bays, coves, rivers, etc. Wind & waves in this skinny little narrow boat in unfamiliar water. Sometimes you catch a wrong gust & flip your boat. Hypothermia is a danger. It takes some grit & backbone to stick with crew. Jmo

All about rowing: Rowing in bad weather

Exposing your athletes to gradual increases in weather conditions is a technique that should be used. A person who’s never been out in strong winds in a scull is going to suffer compared to someone who’s been let out in gradually more difficult conditions and has learned to adjust. Being out in snow or rain is not too bad as long as everyone is wearing proper gear to keep warm.

Interesting. There are 2 court events going on. Those that have taken a plea and are now up for sentencing, and those who are on the way to trial (they could still negotiate a plea deal)
and are having a status conference.

Note all the charges thrown at the ones who are on their way to trial then compare it to the ones who copped a plea. Many charges dropped. I don't believe in piling on charges like that, just to force defendants into taking pleas. Too often innocent people take pleas because of this.

I think Lori is being over charged to force her to plead guilty to one or 2 charges.

Here is what Lori and Mossimo are charged with:

1.) Conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud
2.) Conspiracy to commit honest services mail and wire fraud
3.) Conspiracy to commit federal programs bribery
4.) Conspiracy to commit money laundering.

1/14/2020- Defendant charged in fourth superseding indictment.

2/27/2020 at 11:00 am - Status conference before Judge Gorton.

5/2/2020 at 11:00 am - Status conference before Magistrate Judge Kelley.

When I was in college, the physical fitness coach would even come by the dang fitness center and give us randoms heck about "improper form" on the rowing machine. You have to think about it all the time. Keep your shoulders in line; pull smoothly don't jerk; no getting around proper form by "scooping" your hands and wrists to get around your knees, just straight to-and-fro. Maybe future colleges should start asking for video from their athletes.

Well your a genious. Seriously!!!

All USC had to do was ask for the VIDEO from all these competitions that OJ and sister took part in. To say no video exists speaks for itself. Perfect solution!

Can they photo shop it? Yes, but there should be articles online somewhere listing the athletes of the winning team etc...for those who care to dig for it. Articles on the crew races would be out there somewhere in my opinion.

Didn't USC personnel notice? The rowing coach?

The rowing coach would definitely notice, but he or she was being paid not to notice. It could be hard to determine whether or not it was reasonable for the official to notice the discrepancy without knowing the official’s exact position.

An official at the registrar’s office could well just be reviewing a computer screen that lists the student as an athlete on a school supported team. Such an official could well have no personal contact with the athletics department or the teams what so ever and would simply be trusting the computer.

Even with an official in the athletics department, it could be hit or miss regarding reasonable expectation to know. The Varsity Blues Crew stayed away from the huge money sports of football and Basketball where every position is meticulously tracked and every athlete’s qualifications is reviewed by committees. Rather, they focused on sports where the coaches could well receive far less scrutiny and where the existence of “phantom” athletes might not be readily noticed.

As a result, some officials in the athletics departments could have just been relying on the published rosters for secondary sports. Others, however, may well have been paid not to look beyond the rosters or to ask questions about why a certain number of purportedly well qualified / super dedicated / "must have" athletes tend to.... fade way from the rowing team.

Lock her up? No, Lori Loughlin doesn’t deserve jail time - The Boston Globe

ARTICLE:
Some relish the idea of a wealthy rule-breaker getting her comeuppance. But putting away affluent people — when they don’t deserve it — doesn’t help anyone.

What would the appropriate punishment be for Loughlin if she is found guilty? For starters, she has the financial means to fund an annual scholarship to USC for disadvantaged youths.

Sentence Loughlin to spend time in real conversations with people from unempowered communities, to better understand their experiences, their challenges, and the support they need. Perhaps this will inspire her to acknowledge her own privilege and engage deeply, meaningfully, and authentically in bringing about solutions that foster economic empowerment and increase upward mobility.

ME OPINION:
The argument is that the US puts too many people in prison and statistics are given to back this up. I have to say, giving Lori basically no sentence at all is absolutely not going to send any kind of message other than the wrong one.

Felicity Huffman only got jail time because of who she is, if she wasn't a rich celebrity, no jail time. Loughlin's crimes are much worse than Felicity's and she should get jail time but not because she's a celebrity like Huffman, but because she deserves it, because of the extent of her crimes.

I totally hear what you’re saying, but can’t totally agree. Lori’s extra charges prob were to pressure her to plead guilty- true, but also because she refuses to accept any culpability whatsoever. Plus she is so dang smug about it. Arrogance is not a crime and prisons are overcrowded. But I am grateful to the Feds for pushing this. There are students across America who didn’t make their state’s top tier scholarship- by a couple points- because the SAT stats are skewed by the cheaters. Most people have focused on admission or athletic seats, but my concern is the skew of those scores. State legislatures set the scholarship threshold tiers each year based on bell curve data provided by The College Board. Screwing up that curve likely cost state scholars millions of dollars. Even if your kid goes to college in another state, foregoing their state’s award, they can use the eligibility to negotiate higher out-of-state scholarships from their dream schools- once admission is approved. But you can’t negotiate if you didn’t meet the criteria in the first place. Some kids had near perfect scores because a 30 yo MBA expert test taker took it for them. Small percentages of cheaters raise the threshold- 2-5 points can be the difference of thousands annually- x 4 years! I believe this really is a very serious crime- not just a loss of a crew spot here & there. I really want to see prison time for LL, so that other affluent people will think twice about screwing the little people. Moo

I am really glad you mentioned all this because I never thought about the skewed SAT scores! Strange the Judge doesn't see that there are any victims. I would have to find the article that states that, so consider it opinion.

The skewed SAT scores affecting the curve and affecting non cheating students is sad. Makes me glad Felicity got prison time. Now Lori did not do that, you didn't mention her crimes but say she is not taking any responsibility and is smug. Smug yes, but if she thinks she is innocent of ALL charges then she does not have any responsibility to take.

She is acting like she is innocent. Her mistake was smiling and giving autographs at the courthouse in front of the public. It sends the message that she doesn't take the charges seriously. The charges are serious even if she thinks she is innocent.

I'm not clear on where you disagree with me. I do think Lori should be charged.

Lori Loughlin signed autographs, smiled during court appearance

Big smiles signing autographs while walking into court....

I think I mixed up which parts of your post was quote vs. your take on things. My bad- sorry ‘bout that. I doubt LL really thinks she’s innocent though- I think she’s feigning ignorance when she knew exactly what she was doing- and that it was fraud.

Here’s a link regarding 2021 score thresholds set by FL state legislature based national averages. Every state has a version of this. The threshold numbers are brutally high- based on stats provided by The College Board. Personally, I think TCB should be prosecuted as well for total FAILURE to keep the test secure from fraud. State & federal funds are involved- big money. They allowed “accommodations” to be administered in private rooms with 1 proctor. Pay off the right proctor & you have a test taken or corrected by an expert. Like Singer arranged with his network of con artists.

The most important thing is not who filled out her application but is this application true?
And did she electronically sign the application?

These things listed are not true. I thought she/they only lied that she rowed but no, according to this specific page of the application:

https://html2-f.scribdassets.com/5ltc8oubb47lc6d4/images/2-cef902a27b.jpg

she was in charge of the steering and how hard to row etc... and also that she won 5 medals. I didn't realize how much she/they lied.

They say she's a Coxswain, that is the boat leader, she was not just an oarsman which I originally thought was how they put it.

This is way more than her simply being an oarsman of a rowing team which in itself is a big lie.

So parents lied, OJ lied, and Singer's people who filled out the application lied, and Singer oversaw it all and lied. Wow.. All this non-credible detail......false attention to detail!

and someone thought the sport is called WROW???

JMHO YMMV

Moo

This is the part I am concerned about.

Here is the article written in 2014. It is mostly for international students, but today it looks funny. It specifically explains how College Board safeguards the integrity of their exam. Ha-ha...

Think You Can Cheat on the SAT? The College Board Says Think Again

I wonder how much time @ money the college board has to spend on fixing the tests now? They are compromised.

Following this, SAT aspect, I got into QUORA section where they discussed getting admitted into good colleges. Reading people’s stories - they explain how and why they got rejected from top schools - maybe what they say is right, “take more wholesome approach”, “my essay was weak” - but maybe they got rejected simply because people like Olive Jade took their place? These are really smart kids...

In the aftermath of the recent release of Olivia Jade's fake college athletic resume, some believe the intentional move may shine a light on what's to come for the YouTuber herself.

According to Deseret News, brand and reputation management expert Eric Schiffer's theory is that the prosecution may be "hinting" that they are also building a case against Olivia as well.

"You know, she may face her own charges," Schiffer said, adding, "I mean, they released that document. Who knows what they're gonna do? To me, that was a clear and present danger signal coming from the prosecution that she may get charged. And it's a message to her parents that if they want to protect their daughter, they better play ball."

What Olivia Jade’s exposed fake resume really means for Lori Loughlin

Yeah- that’s a good article. Explains how TCB safeguards secure testing from an electronic/hacking standpoint. But they’ve royally failed to protect the test with good old-fashioned fraud involving payouts to proctors. I have so many issues w TCB-don’t get me started or I’ll be deleted for being OT. But as it relates to the Varsity Blues case, they charge heavy fees for testing, reports, practice tests, registration fees, etc. Then they fail to secure the testing environment. The company is accessory to the crime imo. I think any test used to distribute federal & state taxpayer funds should be administered for free- no expense to students- and run by government as part of the public school system. It’d be a lot more secure imo.

What I've been wondering is what's going on at all of the other schools that have not been named? Realistically, there's got to be a component of "if one does it, they all do." At least, to some extent. IMO, there are dozens, if not hundreds of "Singers" out there, making the college dreams of the hopelessly inept yet overly wealthy entitled set come true.

While the rowing team did compete in the meets listed on the YouTuber’s alleged resume, none of the scores matched the real results.

So not only is this resume a complete lie, but even the scores are a lie.

"I'm going to inflate a teams scores that my daughter wasn't really on."
