Jameson (Jamie) Hahn, 29 years old, political consultant & fundraiser, was stabbed to death by the dinner guest of her husband Nation, in Raleigh, NC, on April 22, 2013. Nation Hahn also suffered serious stab wounds. The killer, John Broyhill, 31 years old, was a good friend to both Hahns, and he was the best man at the Hahn's wedding. Broyhill also suffered self-inflicted stab wounds as well.

The stabbing began during the dinner, and Jamie ran out of the house on Tealwood Place and collapsed outside after leaving a blood trail to the place where she collapsed.

Thanks, OkieGranny - It's amazing to me how you stay in touch with so much!! You really have your ear to the ground, so to speak, and I am grateful for your attention to things. This case is local to me, but I don't know any of the folks involved with this thing. Hahn's family (she, nee Kirk) and Broyhill's are "known" to many in this area and in the Triad area (Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem). You may have heard of Broyhill furniture -- I don't know whether Jamie's family is connected to this, but seems to me there would be at least a scintilla of a blood tie (JMHO). No matter, it's he who is on trial, not his family....

I would not be surprised by a plea agreement if the DA's office would go for it.... I mean, there is no doubt how this happened IMO, and I can't imagine a Self Defense argument...

We'll see.

And I don't know if it will be streamed, but WRAL is big on doing it whenever they can, as long as there is not a conflict with something "bigger" going on at the same time.

Just got an answer -- pretty quickly, I'd say:


"Thanks for your kind words. We plan on streaming the trial, should the judge allow it, and barring any other unforeseen circumstances."

So, we can look forward to that in a week or so!
 
In reviewing the past history of the three friends, Nation Hahn and Broyhill go back to their boyhood as friends although Broyhill was a few years older. I wonder if Broyhill has had a crush on Nation all this time, and he is jealous of Nation's relationship with and love for Jamie. Perhaps that coupled with the alleged embezzlement by Broyhill and Jamie approaching him about it may have resulted in the violence toward Jamie. Just thinkin' about it. Who knoze?
 
Well, WSPeeps, looks like we've got us a trial to watch as long as the judge is still willin' -- he has allowed cameras in his courtroom before in a case that had some pretty tuff stuff in it.

And if the judge is Judge Ridgeway, as I'm thinkin', he's, IMO, a pleasure to watch... nice lookin' guy in my opinion. I don't know who the prosecutors are yet.

I think we'll see a couple of twists and turns in this one -- there's got to be something under the surface, as always, in this one... gotta be. Best friends one minute, and then a murderous attack the next. Oh, dear, what can the matter be??

The man accused of killing his longtime friend and political colleague two years ago lied to her about his health, saying he had pancreatic cancer and other problems, in an effort to keep her from pressing him about financial irregularities in a congressional campaign the two had worked on, a Wake County prosecutor told jurors Wednesday...

Assistant District Attorney Doug Faucette said the investigation later found that Broyhill had embezzled more than $45,000 between 2011 and 2013 from the campaign and left the account with a negative balance. Jamie Hahn had been trying to talk to him about the campaign's finances.

But defense attorneys said in opening statements that Broyhill had no reason to want to harm his friends and that the facts in the case show that his motive was suicide.

So wonder how the defense plans to explain how JH was stabbed so many times if he only trying to commit suicide?
 
The prosecutor is Doug Faucette -- I've never seen him in action before. His mother is in my Women's Bible study class at my church. Another of her sons is a defense atty. here in Raleigh.

The judge is indeed Paul Ridgeway. I've seen him at the bench before; he seems to be calm & fair-minded.

Well, we're slogging thru some of the financial aspects of the case -- very dry, but necessary. The N&O article below explains some of the details of testimony today. It will be resumed tomorrow morning for a short time, according to the defense atty who is conducting the x-exam.

The only defense I can imagine that will take this verdict away from Guilty of 1st Degree Murder (and attempted 1st DM) would be that Broyhill brought the knife with him so that he could kill himself in front of the Hahns. That is my theory -- it was not said during the DT's opening statement which is not evidence anyway. Sliding it in during closing arguments will not be evidence either, of course.

The knife was an 8-inch-blade chef's knife -- not something one would customarily bring to dinner and a financial discussion at the home of your best friend & his wife. Bringing the knife would certainly, IMO, solidify planning & intent for 1st Murder (and suicide as well), so we'll see. I'm not sure how the defense will insert this suicide theme into the evidence unless they put Broyhill on the stand. But they may have a witness who can corroborate it, but it remains to be seen... hmmmm..... dunno

And the autopsy report of Jamie Hahn will be a tuff one -- she was badly wounded. It is obvious to me that he did intend to hurt her. Jealousy of her marrying the man he loved, perhaps, and finally unleashing it?? Who knoze?

Obviously patience is not my strong suit... I'll be quiet for a while.
 
I'm live streaming this trial (paying partial attention). I'm confused by what the defense attorney us doing droning on and on with the neighbor who helped Jamie when she came to their door. He spent about an hour talking about the woman's daughters looking out the window and calling for their parents. Is he stalling for time for some reason or is there a point in here somewhere? Maybe he doesn't want the jury to hear the husband's testimony before the weekend? I can't figure out what he's doing, because he's going in extreme slow motion and not not making any point IMO. Is anyone else listening in?
 
I am listening and can't figure out this significance of this either. Since this isn't a "who-done-it" case, this droning on and on is just to kill time since there really aren't alot of questions to even ask by the defense.
