Melbeta and Gering are over 8 miles apart. Could he really have walked that far?

Melbeta is in between Bayard and Gering, on highway 92, and the North Plate river runs just north of that highway. If Chance fell in the river, it would have taken him that direction. Now, I personally find it unlikely that Chance fell in the river, and he was wearing a short sleeved, thinner shirt when he disappeared, if he were swept up in the river, the shirt sleeve would have been ripped off and not stayed attached to the body for very long. It’s possible his body could have ended up there some other way, but with just the information in the article, it’s hard to speculate what happened without jumping to conclusions.

Noting:

Chief Deputy Troy Brown says on October 18th, they received a call about possible human remains located on land north of the river.

Brown tells KNEB News that part of an arm bone and part of a shirt were located, and the bone was confirmed to be human. He says the the items have been sent off to compare to DNA from previous missing persons cases.

Part of a lower arm bone and a piece of cloth were located within 100 feet of each other.
Forensic pathologists did confirm that the arm is human, he said, and bone marrow was extracted from the arm. From the bone marrow, a DNA sample will be taken and compared with DNA available in missing persons cases locally.
Two cases have possible ties to the North Platte River and DNA comparisons will be made with material collected in those cases; One is the case of Chance Englebert… The other case of Walter “Gene “ Patterson-Black. Authorities searched the North Platte River after the man had been reported missing on May 15, 2016.
After the arm bone was located, Brown said, authorities contacted Tri-State Search and Rescue and areas of the North Platte River on both sides of the river were searched with a cadaver dog. No additional bones or other materials were located.
