Statement from Aunt Monica:

"It was pretty devastating seeing a lot of the pictures of Juliette for the first time, because our family had not ever seen the evidence. So, we just have to take it one day at a time. All we can do is keep hoping and praying that we get a conviction with the evidence that is there, when this is all over. And we appreciate all the prayers and support that the family has been receiving, thank you. And we're grateful to have Doug Warner and James Zimmerman as the prosecution for the state, and let's hope and pray that it comes out the way it should, for Juliette."

• Injuries suffered by the girl were significant enough that
they would have caused her death within minutes to a half-hour, pathologist Dr. Richard Simmons testified.

This is the best news I have heard since I first heard the name "Juliette Serenity Geurts."
I have always wondered how long Juliette suffered silently, in pain, wanting someone to make it better.
While a half hour would seem like an eternity... it makes me feel better to know it wasn't hours of suffering. :tears:

The mother of toddler Juliette Geurts has been found in contempt of court and is in custody after refusing a court order to testify Tuesday during the murder trial of her former boyfriend Dustin Chauncey.

Charyse Geurts had claimed her 5th amendment right during a hearing following a noon recess during the first day of the trial. Transcripts of the closed hearing released by District judge Leo Dobrovolny indicate the court granted a state motion to give Geurts immunity for her testimony. Dobrovolny then ordered Geurts to testify, but after consulting with her attorney, she refused to do so. Her refusal resulted in the contempt order from the court.

Geurts has reportedly been taken to a Wyoming correctional facility, where she will stay until the end of the trial.

Monica Hall, the aunt of Juliette Geurts, said that the Geurts family was told that Charyse Geurts refused to testify in the trial of Dustin Chauncey. Geurts had been scheduled to testify early this afternoon, but apparently refused to testify. A journal entry, provided by the court from the hearing, says that Geurts invoked her Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination.

The state moved to grant the woman immunity, but she still refused to testify. According to the journal entry, the judge advised the woman that she may not refuse to comply, but the woman still refused to testify. The journal says the woman was advised that she could not be prosecuted except for prosecution for perjury, giving a false statement or failing to comply with the order of the court.

Hall told the Star-Herald that Geurts, who had been on house arrest after being detained last week as a material witness, was taken into custody and would be transferred to a Torrington facility. The journal entry confirms that the woman was found in contempt of court and was placed into the custody of the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center. She is not to be bonded out until further order of the court, according to the journal entry.

Whats the deal with this? Why no testimony if she's been granted immunity? Is she afraid for everyone to know how cruelly apathetic she was? Who is this monster mother?

While I place the blame fully on Chauncey and Guerts, I can't believe her daddy has gone back to this woman and hasn't pushed for justice for the appalling death of his daughter! That completely blows my mind!

Must have been twice yesterday. Once before she was advised they wouldn't be able to charge her for facilitating her daughter's murder and protecting her murderer. Then again she refused, and that is when she was held in contempt and sent to Torrington.

While I place the blame fully on Chauncey and Guerts, I can't believe her daddy has gone back to this woman and hasn't pushed for justice for the appalling death of his daughter! That completely blows my mind!

And where is this great daddy now? In the courtroom? Cowering under a bush in TX?

I assume taking care of the other 3 kids.
I have no idea what their situation is for babysitters.
However it doesn't appear Casey will be testifying.
So he had no need to come. :dunno:

It looks like she refused to testify AGAIN today.
Good move, accuse the one person who shed a tear over Juliette.

Defense accuses prosecution witness of killing toddler

-----------------------------

"You killed Juliette, didn't you?" Jeff Pickens, attorney for Chauncey asked Townsend on the stand.

"No, sir," Townsend said.

-----------------------------

Also on Wednesday, Paul Cardwell, a federal inmate, testified about conversations that he and another inmate had with Chauncey. Cardwell alleged that Chauncey admitted to having having caused the girl's death by kicking her in the chest.

----------------------------

Charyse Geurts briefly took the stand again Wednesday and Judge Leo Dobrovolny outlined the reasons he was holding the woman in contempt. The woman was asked again if she would testify, and she asked to be allowed to call her husband, Casey Geurts. Her attorney returned later and Charyse Geurts has again refused to testify in the case, even after being offered immunity and a list of questions by prosecutors that would be asked if she took the stand.

Wow. I'm staggered by this. Completely stunned. I'm a mother myself and I just cannot understand this.

As a mother you also probably can't understand much of this woman's behavior.
I have never been able to get over her not watching Juliette that night.

Coming home from the emergency room with her baby...
Then taking sleeping pills, having sex and going to bed.

It is beyond my comprehension.
When my kids are sick I watch them constantly...
I cannot imagine taking a medication and going to sleep. :dunno:

'Justice for Juliette' TRIAL UPDATE: Charyse Geurts will NOT testify in trial.

Our family is so devastated that the Mother with Juliette's father standing next to her supported her refusing to testify even with full immunity.
There are too many emotions this morning to even begin to put them in words as we fight through tears.
Juliette and Jaelyn deserve Justice for Juliette's brutal murder.

OMG if the public could have seen the pictures you would have been horrified on how brutal the beating was.
There were no second chances for Juliette why do those responsible for her death think they can just walk away like nothing ever happened...
We need a lot of prayers and let there be justice for Juliette...

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Justice-for-Juliette/163622797027340?ref=br_tf

I so hope that jury knows there ARE people who care about Juliette.
Who want justice for her.
Who are willing to fight for her.
I don't want them thinking that her mother and father not caring... means nobody does. :tears:

This story about Juliette interrupting the sex... you KNOW what that means right?
That means that Charyse WITNESSED at least some of the abuse.
That means that Charyse ALLOWED it to happen.

I wanted to believe she was just irresponsible and slept through it.
This means that she did not, but is also responsible for it.
No wonder she doesn't want to testify. It might make her look even worse than she looks now.

Yet... she is able to keep having babies... over and over again.
It just doesn't seem fair, does it? :tantrum:

Prosecution Rests, Defense Begins in Chauncey Trial

------------------------------

After the prosecution rested, the defense made a motion claiming the state failed to show intent in the case... but that motion was denied. Chauncey's attorneys started their defense, saying they will provide evidence attempting to impeach testimony by Townsend.

Chauncey jury trial likely going to the jury Thursday

It is likely the jury trial of Dustin Chauncey will conclude sometime Thursday
after Defense Attorney Todd Lancaster indicated he had only a few more witnesses to testify at the end of the day Wednesday. Chauncey is accused of intentional child abuse resulting in death in the 2008 killing of two year old Juliette Geurts.

With the toddler’s mother Charyse Geurts refusing to testify and still being held in contempt of court, the case may come down to which federal inmate lodged with Chauncey at the Scotts Bluff County Corrections Center is more credible to the jury.

-----------------------------------------

But her lawyer, Bell Island, issued a press release soon afterwards saying “Charyse Geurts continues to desire to cooperate with the Prosecution, however, the only testimony they want to believe is their version of the truth. The Prosecution’s version of the truth, while inconsistent with the actual events, forces Ms. Geurts to either lie or face perjury charges. Geurts continues to desire justice for her daughter, Juliette, but will not lie to achieve that result.”

I wish we could watch this live.... but I'm also glad that we cannot.
I have a lot to do this week... and I would be glued to this if I could watch it. :twocents:

Praying the jurors can see the truth for Juliette and Jaelyn.
Charyse Geurts/Vardeman the so called mother was offered full immunity even with a list of the questions that would be asked and she still refused to stand up for her murdered daughter.
She only ran the risk of perjury if she lied and could have walked away free and clear of any charges.
If Dustin Chauncey walks from this trial free and clear it will be completely because of Charyse Geurts/Vardeman and if he kills or harms anyone again it is on her head.
She would not protect her daughter in life & she just wants to forget her in death and move on... We pray for a guilty verdict for Juliette & Jaelyn's sake... — in Gering, Nebraska.

------------------------

The jury is now deliberating the fate of 28 year old Dustin Chauncey,

The jury received the case around 1 p.m. this afternoon.

It is almost 2pm there now... so they've had the case for an hour.
So about 3 hours until court adjourns for the day.
