A petition calling for an investigation into the "failing justice system in the case of Michael P." following Anne Faber's death has already received 175,000 signatures. The convicted sex offender P. is the only suspect in the case.

The petition was launched last night by a "mother of three daughters, to give the people a voice". It is addressed to Prime Minister Rutte, Minister Blok of Security and Justice and the Altrecht clinic that treated P.

The number of signatures increases rapidly. Around 09. hours, the petition had been signed 73,000 times, an hour later already more than 100,000 times. Around 13.30 o' clock the counter stood at 175,000 signatures. "Apparently there are more people who feel the same powerlessness as I do," according to Lydia, the woman behind the initiative. She does not want her surname to be known.

The petition says: "The people are angry and abhorred! We call to account those responsible, including the Ministry of Security and Justice, and demand an explanation." The petition also asks for an investigation into the clinic in Den Dolder where the suspect was staying.

"What has happened to Anne Faber must never happen again", Lydia said to NOS. "Our aim is to change the legal system so that it never happens again. I am not a lawyer, I do not know how to change the system; that is what the House of Representatives is about. But the whole system needs to be examined and improved."

So sad to learn that her body has been found. I just hoped she was somewhere alive. Wishful thinking.
RIP Anne.

Sent from my Life One X2 using Tapatalk

I was really hoping that too, even 'taking a break'... even when they found the coat I still hoped (although against hope really) that maybe she purposely tried to throw them off. Then when they started finding other items... it was clear. :(

One day after the remains of Anne Faber have been found, a Dutch court is releasing another dangerous criminal:

https://www.telegraaf.nl/nieuws/805881/te-gevaarlijke-leidenaar-vrijgelaten

Leiden - The District Court of The Hague is releasing a suspect of whom the judicial authorities say that he is a lethal danger. The 41-year-old Hussein G., who tried to kill his former wife, is, according to the judicial authorities,"too dangerous to walk around freely".

He had already been released temporarily before and, according to the judiciary, he then committed two violent crimes.

G. was shot down by the police at the Leidse Arendshorst in July 2016 after he had tried to bludgeon his ex to death, the Leidsch Dagblad writes. Apparently, he was released conditionally again in May this year. Then he threatened someone at the cafe De Koperwiek with a broken bottle. Shortly afterwards he gave his new girlfriend a headbutt and hit her with a blackjack.

His case will not go to court until February. The president of the court, who, according to the newspaper, said that "Shocking things have been done by this person", decided to release the man from Leiden again today.

Why??

What in the ever loving blazes?! Is there anyone with a brain left in charge of anything in The NL?! :gaah:

Many EU countries focus on rehabilitation for criminal behavior, particularly for young offenders. The USA and other countries that practice capital punishment focus on punishment. Given that Michael P. was given such latitude and freedoms as an unapologetic violent child rapist demonstrates that the approach to rehabilitation has been severely compromised in favor of overlooking recognized psychological disturbances with the assumption that all that is needed is a structured normal living environment and a job.

The entire treatment of violent criminals needs to be overhauled to protect society, not necessarily with a focus on punishment, but with as a reassessment of what rehabilitation means.

I have no problem with rehabilitation but this guy apperently refused the program and was allowed all these freedoms anyway, that's what I don't get.

That's more or less what I mean - that rehabilitation of violent criminals has transformed, or been reduced, to giving them a place to live, a job, and freedoms to roam freely after 2/3 of their sentence with an assumption that all will be well even though statistics completely refute that assumption.

The question was asked on SM: what psychological theory offers or claims that this man could be cured at all? (answer from experts: none)

Meanwhile, the law 'Care and Coercion' has been waiting approval of the Upper House since 2013. This law might have made it easier for the judge to sentence Michael P. to criminal insanity treatment without his consent.
Judges already have this option now, under the current laws, but they hardly use it, mainly because they do not dare to.

Petition this morning at over 320.000, and counting.

OR instead of focusing on rehabilitation or punishment, they could just accept that some criminals will never be 'fixed' and keep them locked up. Myself and my kids walk the streets these criminals are being 'released' back to and I'm very unappreciative of it. I've always thought they were too 'soft' on certain types of criminals, and after living elsewhere for decades and now being back, it seems it's just gotten worse.

An overhaul is needed for sure, but at least build in the option to keep them locked up (sort of a three strikes law), and instead give society the benefit of the doubt for a change. As in - "we have doubts this guy can be rehabilitated (and they had those in this case) so let's give society a second chance and keep this dude locked away".

I'm thinking drugs may have played a role in this crime. I'm also wondering if, when he is not under the influence, he is able to recognise his behaviour is wrong and that is how he came to be treated with some lenience in the first place, and why he gave up the hiding place.

Yes it was mentioned in one article quoted a couple pages back that he was on cocaine when he killed Anne.

bbm Why do they not dare to use the power they have? Maybe they shouldn't be a judge then.

https://www.telegraaf.nl/nieuws/809628/dna-ontmaskerde-p

Den Dolder - A trace of DNA on Anne Faber's recovered coat exposed murder suspect Michael P. The multiple rapist was caught by his past as a sex offender because the trace matched the profile that was stored in the DNA database of the Netherlands Forensic Institute after a previous conviction of P..

After the match, it was a relatively easy task for the investigation team to find out where P. was staying, namely in a psychiatric clinic in Den Dolder. The breakthrough in the investigation is therefore mainly due to the person who found Anne's coat. That was one of the many volunteers and witnesses who, after Anne's disappearance, tirelessly searched for traces of the places where she had been last seen. The jacket was found in the village of Huis ter Heide in the municipality of Zeist.

The fact that DNA traces on the jacket led to Michael P. is confirmed to this newspaper by sources close to the investigation. The police and the Public Prosecution Service do not want to answer any questions about the further course of the investigation.

It was already known earlier that after the jacket the bicycle of the young woman was found in a pond and a backpack nearby. No traces of P. were found on the bicycle. It is not known whether there were any traces on the backpack.

The most likely scenario is that P. overpowered Anne while she was cycling by or hiding from the rain. The multiple rapist probably murdered her in the same area, and possibly later, when her belongings were found, he transported her by car to Zeewolde. The precise chronology is still being investigated by the police.

Solving the murder proves once again the success and importance of the DNA database in the fight against crime. After all, the discovery of the trace led to Michael P., who then, after long interrogations, indicated the place where he left the murdered girl.

DNA was already very often a crown witness in controversial and less well-known murder cases. The DNA database now contains data from a quarter of a million Dutch people. People who have been convicted of a crime are legally obliged to give up their DNA.

... The multiple rapist probably murdered her in the same area, and possibly later, when her belongings were found, he transported her by car to Zeewolde.

This would explain the strange time line, at least partially, because initially it seemed like he would not have had the time to attack, hide and bury between visiting his mother's birthday and his curfew at 11 o'clock in the evening.

http://www.elsevierweekblad.nl/opin...-nederland-alles-behalve-uitzondering-550191/

In the Netherlands the case of Michael P. is anything but an exception.

From time to time, the Netherlands is shocked by a murder of the outside category, usually in combination with rape and often committed, because people who are supposed to do their job properly have failed to do so. The death of Anne Faber, that is rightfully stirring emotions, is unfortunately a textbook example.

Michael P. is the' suspected perpetrator', even though there is no one who thinks another person has done it.

The facts are now too well known: P. is a repeat offender, he raped two girls in 2010 'in a horrible manner' (do rapes exist in a non-horrible manner?), was first sentenced to 16 years, but because he appealed against the severity of the sentence he was finally given 11 years.

In reality, that is 7 1/2 years, because' good behaviour' means that 1/3 of the penalty time is waived and you have to go very far in prison should there be no question of good behaviour.

For almost a year now, in order to make his return to society run smoothly, he was no longer in prison but in a psychiatric institution, where he could walk in and out, and if the story is correct, he had a relationship with his female supervisor.
(According to the rules of the medical profession KNMG sexual contacts between doctors and patients are always forbidden, but apparently in the woods of Den Dolders, rules are different.)

P. had no TBS (Criminal Insanity Treatment) because he refused to have his psyche investigated and the authorities did not force him, although they might have done so.

These are unimaginable facts and I have not mentioned them all in their astonishing stupidity. The blame game has started now; very hypocritical, because the course of events around P. is all but an exception in the Netherlands: there are a lot of P's and we can still be pleased that they do not all commit murders. (hohoho: I mean of course 'presumably').

In the meantime, public opinion has thrown itself on this matter and the (alleged) perpetrator. And it is clear: if it is up to the 'average Dutchman' thet our Prime Minister likes to mention, P. will the bullet today, after he has first been castrated. If I let my heart speak, I would also find that a good idea; in the current state of affairs, it is the only guarantee that P. never returns to the ordinary world again (or in prison or institution commits another serious crime). Regardless of whether the society would ever have any use for P if he returned.

But in matters like this, the heart is not the reliable source. We live in a country and in a society where civilisation has prevailed over an evolutionary process of many centuries. Private justice no longer exists, even a suspect of a serious crime is entitled to a lawyer, revenge is no longer the predominant motive, and so on. ( BTW The so-called honour killings of some groups of population should be dealt with more firmly!).

This is good, especially when you realise in how many countries in 2017 this is different.

But that's where the good news ends. We have become so civilised that it sometimes seems as if correct treatment of perpetrators, under the rule of law, is more important than the interests of victims and survivors. And that of society as a whole. Much has already been said and written about this, but it has hardly helped.

And there is something else that may be even more important. The same civilised society is protected by laws and regulations. Of course, it is the intention that these should be applied and, if necessary, stretched to the limit. In this case - but this is only one example by chance - everything should have been stretched to that limit in order to force P. into an examination from which probably a TBS would have emerged. And of course, the 16-year sentence should never have been reduced on appeal.

A humane, constitutional state is a great asset. But if you don't protect it, it will be lost in the long run. Once again, we have laws and regulations for that. And if they are not enough, we need new, better ones. And anyone who, certainly in matters of life and death, applies the rules incorrectly should start looking for another job. As of today.

The forensic psychiatric hospital Altrecht Aventurijn in Den Dolder has increased security and initiated an investigation after a report of an incident last Thursday in the grounds of the healthcare institution. This is confirmed by an spokesman of Aventurijn.

According to the report, a female passer-by was chased on Thursday evening by a man near the section where Michael P. was staying. P. is suspected of involvement in Anne Faber's disappearance and death. According to the report, the incident ended well because a person who rents accommodation on the grounds intervened.

A spokesman of Aventurijn says that the investigation into the report of the pursuit is ongoing and it is not yet certain whether the person in question is a patient of the institution. As a result of the incident, Aventurijn decided to hire security staff who are now on site 24 hours a day, she says. Aventurijn has been employing neighbourhood coaches as' contact points' for a long time.

The father of one of the victims of Michael P. begged for help in vain

NIJKERK - The father of one of the two girls who was brutally raped in 2010 by Michael P., the man who is now suspected of being involved in Anne Faber's death, has repeatedly asked the politicians for help in recent years. However, he would never have received an answer to the letters he wrote.

That is what crime reporter Peter R. de Vries reports on Twitter Sunday. He posted a picture of a letter from 2012, which the father of one of Michael P.'s victims wrote to then State Secretary of Justice Fred Teeven. Two years earlier, the man's daughter and a friend in Nijkerk had been violently raped by Michael P. The father wrote the cry for help after the appeal, in which P. was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

The man describes the nightmare in which the girls have found themselves since the notorious night in 2010. "The reason why I am writing to you on this subject relates to the way in which the victims are treated as rag-bales in this situation, and do not in any form receive protection from the arm of the law or justice." According to Peter R. de Vries, the father never received any answer to this and other similar calls for help.

Maybe it was too dark to recognize him?

It's good they hired additional security but what I had hoped to hear in the aftermath of this tragedy is that Aventurijn is enforcing curfew and that none of the other offenders who are currently staying at Aventurijn is allowed to leave the facility without supervision. Especially those who are violent offenders. The additional security alone looks to me like a band aid on a knife wound. Not enough.

Father of victim of Michael P.: Gala of errors led to death of Anne

Nijkerk - The father of the then 17-year-old woman from Nijkerk, who was violently raped by Michael P. (27) in 2010, has completely lost his confidence in the rule of law. "What is very bitter and harsh for me is that, at the time, they did little more than muddle on a bit."

Father R. wrote this in a letter to the Ministries of Security and Justice and Home Affairs. The letter was sent to De Telegraaf by the father via the crime journalist Peter R. de Vries, who was approached by him. The father has stated that he does not want to be interviewed.

In 2010, P. raped two girls aged 16 and 17 in Nijkerk. He did so under the threat of a firearm. The two also had to have sex with each other and were severely traumatized by the occurrence. P. later stated that he was proud of his actions.

"I fought for three years at the time to demonstrate P.'s unstable mind in many ways. I have gathered info from all corners and holes to demonstrate this. Also with regard to drug use and abuse. Four years after my last report, I must regret that it did not do anything to help," the very disappointed father wrote.

According to the father, the observation of P. in the Pieter Baan Centrum yielded a report of 21 pages about him. Despite his refusal to cooperate, P. was there exactly one month, according to the father. The Pieter Baan Centrum also expressed their concern about recidivism and pointed out that P. was a danger to society and someone from whom society must be protected.

Partly because P. refused to be examined, the court and superior court did not impose a TBS [ Criminal Insanity Treatment ] on him. The East Netherlands District Court does not want to react to this. We do not comment on individual cases," according to a spokesperson.

The father sees a direct link between the failure of the legal system and Anne Faber's death. "This also meant that we now have to say goodbye to a girl of 25 years, Anne Faber, in the bloom of her life."

According to the father, the public prosecutor initially stated that in the worst case P. could expect a maximum sentence of three months and 240 hours' community service. "I thought I was exploding."

He writes that initially only a handful of police agents worked on the rape. "Because of my actions, this was quickly scaled up to the investigation team Sparta, with 25 men."

The father says that in the appeal, he "was treated like ****, while the perpetrator was treated like a king". We were placed in the wrong area and were seated directly behind P. Unfortunately, I did not abuse the situation after some doubt and because I was raised properly, but I would have liked to have wrung his neck. And I would have succeeded.

During the trial it became clear, the father writes, that P. also had wanted to push a woman with her bicycle who had been attacked by him off the embankment. It was only because cars came along and people stepped out that this woman was rescued. " It is striking that at the end of September in Nijkerk a woman was pulled off the bicycle and attacked. The attacker stopped when a car arrived. Police and justice are investigating whether P. was responsible for this.

"The legal system has failed immensely here and there have been very clear gross errors of judgment, because this doom scenario has been described and expressed several times from the start. Not only by me as an individual person but also substantiated after one month of observation in Pieter Baan Centrum," the letter reads.

The father sent several letters to the cabinet ministers Teeven and Opstelten. "Unfortunately, I have never received any comments except for a notification that my letters and mails had been received in good order:" The Ministry of S & J states in a response that it did react at the time, but does not want to comment on the content of the response. We are not going to comment on individual cases," a spokesman said.

The father believes that the persons whom he sees as responsible for the gala of errors around Michael P. should be held accountable and resign from their positions.

In a personal conversation with this newspaper, he also tells us that his daughter is doing well under circumstances. "Last week, both I and my daughter have partly relived the events of back then. That is hard. I hope that the same mistakes will not be repeated, especially for Anne's relatives. You cannot do that to us nor to society."

Parents of murdered children: who will be the next victim?

Rowena was 4 years old when she was murdered. In the past few days, the images and pain of father Martin Huisman returned all over again due to Anne Faber's disappearance. He has helped to search in Soesterberg. "I went down my knees when I heard that Anne was found." Tomorrow he will be going to the Binnenhof [ location of the Dutch Parliament ] with his fellow sufferers to demand a change in the legal system.

Anne Faber's body was found on Thursday on the Nulderpad in Zeewolde, at a stone's throw from the spot where body parts of tiny Rowena were found in 2001. The [ then unidentified ] 4-year-old Rowena Rikkers became known under the name 'Girl of Nulde'.

Rowena had died of ill-treatment. The details that came out in the courtroom were horrific. Her stepfather Mike J, was sentenced to twelve years of imprisonment and TBS [ Criminal Insanity Treatment ]. Recently his TBS was extended for two years, but he appealed against the decision. Later this month the court session will be held. Martin Huisman: "When I see him sitting like that, I want to hit him. It is that there are six officers around him...."

He can't understand that there would be any question of his daughter's murderer being able to walk around freely. "I have life, I will never get rid of my pain and sadness ever. This man should never get out in society again. Life in prison must be given to perpetrators of this kind. Or rather the electric chair."

Huisman will go to the Binnenhof tomorrow to tell his story to politicians. "I would like to make it clear to the politicians that our system is not right. For Rowena, but also for other victims. And how many more innocent people will die?" he wonders.

Huisman feels connected in all cases where parents lose their child. After Anne Faber's death, something snapped inside him. "I helped find her when she was missing. That is how connected I feel." The news of her death and the possible involvement of the convicted sex offender Michael P. made him livid.

"The penal system is a failure. If this goes on, many more deaths will occur. How many more madmen are given the chance to return to society, who will go wrong again. They cannot be cured,"
he thinks.
