New Jersey brother charged in family's murder accused of insurance fraud

COLTS NECK, New Jersey -- A grand jury in New Jersey has returned a superseding indictment against the brother of a Colts Neck man found dead with his wife and two kids days before Thanksgiving.

Paul Caneiro is now charged with insurance fraud on top of the murder, aggravated arson and other charges he previously faced in connection with the death of his brother Keith, his sister in law Jennifer, and their two kids, 11-year-old Jesse and 8-year-old Sophia.

[...]

Paul Caneiro will appear in court July 29. He has pleaded not guilty to the earlier charges and remains held without bail.

Insurance fraud in New Jersey carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni has said the motive for the killings was related to money after Paul allegedly stole $75,000 from Keith.

Keith Caneiro was 90 percent owner of Squareone Inc., a technology firm, with his brother owning the remaining 10 percent. The brothers were equal owners of a second business, EcoStar Pest Management, both of which were operated out of a single office in Asbury Park.

Money had gone missing from the businesses, and Keith had told Paul he was cutting off his wife from payments.

A Monmouth County grand jury indicted Caneiro, 51, of Ocean Township, with one count of second-degree insurance fraud, the Monmouth County prosecutor's office announced Tuesday. They say that for five years, from 2012 to 2019, Caneiro received disability payments for a car accident, all while he was working for his brother's businesses.

The brothers, Paul and Keith Caneiro, owned two businesses together in Asbury Park: Jay Martin/SquareOne technology firm and Eco-Star PM, a pest extermination company. It was a dispute over money that motivated Caneiro to murder his younger brother and his wife and children, alleged Monmouth County Prosecutor Chris Gramiccioni.

Caneiro will next appear in court July 29. He was denied bail and remains at the Monmouth County jail, where he has been held since the November murders.

Within days of the murders, the county prosecutor said he had reason to believe the motive was financial. Since the murders, detectives have been painstakingly combing through the Caneiro brothers' business records. This affidavit released in February alleged that older brother Paul stole $78,000 from the businesses over the past two years — and that younger brother Keith suspected his brother of taking the money.

Accused Colts Neck Killer Now Charged With Insurance Fraud

@Seattle1 - any updates on this case for next court date. I've tried searching, but getting very old articles. Guess I'm blocked over here....
Hi @Niner -- I'm not seeing any press about the hearing taking held but I'll search twitter.

I believe Paul may be seeking counsel to represent him for the insurance fraud. I think his murder defense lawyers have their hands full.

Paul Caneiro pleads not guilty to insurance fraud

FREEHOLD - Paul J. Caneiro, 52 has pleaded not guilty to insurance fraud, the latest in an onslaught of criminal charges the Ocean Township quadruple-murder defendant has faced.

Monmouth County First Assistant Deputy Public Defender Patrice Bearden entered the plea on Caneiro's behalf before Judge Joseph W. Oxley in a minutes-long court appearance Monday morning.

Paul Caneiro pleads not guilty to insurance fraud

Acquaintances of Paul Caneiro had previously told the Asbury Park Press that a 2012 crash had left him forever changed, both physically and emotionally. He was charged with reckless driving in the crash, but later exonerated, court records show.

The other driver — whom he sued in civil court — was not charged.

Paul Caneiro also sued his own insurance company, alleging the other driver's insurance policy could not pay him the full amount he was owed and that his company should kick in the balance, according to his complaint. His insurance company settled with him for $120,000, court records show.

Prosecutors have previously said Paul Caneiro had a financial motive for exterminating an entire branch of his family tree.

too early to ask for next court date? TIA!

"It started as a fire at a sprawling mansion in Colts Neck. What authorities soon learned would be far worse: A family of four brutally killed inside the comfort of their own home just days before Thanksgiving.

The case has dragged through the court system, delayed by the exchange of thousands of pages of financial documents tied to the brothers’ businesses. Adding to the delay was a change in defense attorneys and in July, prosecutors filed additional charges of insurance fraud against Paul Caneiro. He has also pleaded not guilty to those charges.

In the year since the killings, new information has emerged from detailed police reports attached to public court filings, painting the clearest portrait yet of the crimes. But mysteries remain, as people wonder how could someone allegedly commit such heinous acts against loved ones.

In the year since, Paul Caneiro has spent most of his time in a single-person cell under “constant watch,” a jail official said.

On Monday, his home on Tilton Drive in the Wayside section of Ocean was empty. A dumpster in the driveway was full of construction debris and permits were prominently displayed on the front window.

He and his wife still own the property, but she could not be reached for an interview. His family hasn’t attended any of his court hearings.

Caneiro is scheduled to be back in court on Dec. 2. After that, there will likely be pre-trial motions, delaying the trial for months until the spring."

He was accused of killing his brother and family. A year later, what’s happened in the case?

Paul Caneiro’s case was once handled by two prominent Monmouth County defense attorneys. However, they dropped him as a client after a conflict of interest surfaced in the discovery process.

His fate now lays in the hands of the public defender’s office. One of those attorneys, Michael Wicke, declined to comment.

His former attorney, Robert A. Honecker Jr., said he recently saw Caneiro in the jail in passing and the two exchanged pleasantries.

“He is an intelligent man,” Honecker said. “He still has the support of his family.”

Colts Neck murders: One year later, killings remain 'unwanted reminder of evil'

"It’s the school bus skittering down Willow Brook Road that most unnerves Joy Gamache.

The bus appears each morning to pick up the young children who live in the house next to the Colts Neck paddock where Gamache tends to her horses. But it’s the children who aren’t there who are on Gamache’s mind most mornings.

Jesse and Sophia Caneiro, ages 11 and 8, used to board that school bus too, emerging each morning from the big modern mansion across the street from the paddock. But the house has been quiet for the last year. The two children were slain along with their mom and dad at 15 Willow Brook Road on Nov. 20, 2018 – their bodies recovered after a massive fire roared through the house.

“(The bus) just reminds you every day,” Gamache said."
