Mystisk mobilspor etter savnet nederlender forvirrer fortsatt politiet
Mysterious mobile traces after Dutchman went missing still confuse the police
Eight months after Arjen Kamphuis disappeared, the police still do not know why his mobile phone hit three base stations in Rogaland - ten days after he was last seen.
The findings the police have made so far in connection with the search for the missing Arjen Kamphuis may indicate that he has been exposed to an accident - but then there was this mobile trail in Rogaland.
- Based on the findings at Rognan, it could have been obvious to conclude that Kamphuis has been the victim of an accident. However, there is this so-called Rogaland trail, a trail that allows us not to draw that conclusion, says police inspector Bjarte Walla in Nordland police district to NRK
For eight months, the police have actively investigated what has happened to the missing Dutchman Arjen Kamphuis, of whom there are no safe observations since August last year.
The 46-year-old is a Dutch security expert. He has provided IT advice to the government and has helped journalists, lawyers and human rights activists to protect themselves against digital espionage.
August 20 he checked out of the Scandic Hotel in Sjøgata in Bodø. Later that day he was observed in the center of Rognan in Saltdal. Since then no one has seen him.
- The observation on Rognan is not confirmed, but we consider it so safe that the last known place where he was seen is on Rognan on August 20th.
- What makes this observation so secure?
- It is safe because there have been discoveries of belongings belonging to Kamphuis near Rognan. A kayak has also been discovered, and this is a kayak of the same brand that he bought in the Netherlands before traveling to Norway.
The kayak was found in Kvænflåget in Fauske municipality by a recreational fisherman. However, the police cannot determine whether the kayak has actually been in use or not.
- Here we have conflicting information. Some information indicates that it has been used, others say it has not been, says Walla.
But then it was this mobile trace in Rogaland. On August 30, that is, ten days after Kamphuis checked out of the hotel in Bodø and later was observed at Rognan, the mobile phone of Kamphuis connected to three base stations in Rogaland.
- Based on the times when the mobile phone has connected to the base stations, we conclude that the mobile phone may have been in a vehicle that moved on the way north along the E18 towards Stavanger at a speed approximately equivalent to the speed limit, Walla says.
But what kind of vehicle, who owned it, and whether Kamphuis was also on board the vehicle has not yet been clarified.
"We have collected information on tolls, we have questioned several witnesses and we have ongoing active investigations related to this track," says police inspector Walla, who also says that a legal request has been sent to foreign police that the police in Norway are still awaiting response to.
Walla says the police will continue the investigation as long as there are active investigative steps to take.
"But we consider ourselves to be in a final phase of the investigation, in the sense that the active investigative steps we can reasonably and appropriately undertake begin to be exhausted.
The police still have three main hypotheses in connection with the disappearance:
1. Kamphuis has been the victim of an accident
2. Kamphuis has voluntarily chosen to stay hidden
3. Kamphuis has been the subject of some criminal action
- We have ourselves some thoughts how these three hypotheses stand in relation to each other, but it is something we are not ready to speak about this at the stage, Walla says.
