"The cleaning woman whose body was found in a New York City building had been hogtied and her mouth taped shut — left with her gold crucifix dangling over it — before being tossed down an air duct, authorities said Sunday.

Detectives continued to closely watch a hotheaded, freight-elevator operator. They used a search warrant to gather potential evidence from his girlfriend's car last night — including some of his work clothes and a pair of sneakers they'll try to match to the crime scene, sources said."

Sources say the detectives haven't moved in yet because they're waiting for DNA results or perhaps even a fingerprint from the duct tape that was wrapped around Rodriguez.

Police sources say Rodriguez' body was found in an area under reconstruction. If another couple of days had passed, her body might have been sealed away permanently.

What a sad, sad story of someone who was just trying to do her best for her family despite the fear she felt about her workplace. I also wonder how the message was passed to her to work on another floor?

Police could determine by Thursday or Friday whether a New Springville elevator operator is or is not a suspect in last week's grisly slaying of a cleaning woman in Manhattan, an attorney representing the "person of interest" said.

Joseph Pabon, 26, has not been charged or even called a suspect in the slaying of 46-year-old Eridania Rodriguez, whose bound body was found stuffed in a vent in the Manhattan building where she worked on Saturday.

The missing mother - whose body was found stuffed inside an air-conditioning duct in a Manhattan building - was apparently still alive when she was shoved inside the vent, according to published reports.

Tuesday morning, three days after finding the body, police said they still have yet to identify a suspect in the brutal homicide. It has been reported that police questioned and are still surveilling the building's freight elevator operator, who left the building early in the evening on July 7 and had scratches on his arms and hands.

The family of a cleaning woman who was killed inside a lower Manhattan skyscraper is growing impatient as the investigation into the victim's murder continues.

...........

The family of Rodriguez is flying her body to Dominican Republic on Thursday for burial.

Detectives tell CBS 2 that they believe the crime started out as a sexual assault, but that the fight between Rodriguez and her attacker quickly escalated and it became a murder before the sexual assault could continue.

I've never seen anything like it, I've never seen police behave or act in this manner," Gallucci told reporters, as Pabon stood next to him. Pabon stared straight ahead and would not answer any questions.

Gallucci said he was told police would likely determine whether Pabon is indeed a suspect by Thursday or Friday, but did not elaborate. If his client is cleared, Gallucci said he would file a complaint against police for harassment.

Eridania Rodriguez, 46, was found bound, her face wrapped in tape, after her killer shoved her into an air conditioning duct at 2 Rector St., where she died of asphyxiation, police said. Her family says they are too afraid to sleep and are living in fear.

That statement almost makes it sound like Eridania was still alive when she was put into the air duct and she suffocated while inside. I hope that isn't the case. That would be awful.

She was still alive. :(

Somehow I missed that. OMG. How completely awful. I cannot even begin to imagine being stuffed in an air conditioning vent while hog-tied. I hope for her sake she was dazed from the head wound and went quickly.

This sounds like a crime of panic. She was assaulted and things got out of hand. The suspect knew he went too far, he didn't want to kill her but he wanted her dead so he did it in an abstract kind of way. He knew she would suffocate. It is almost the equivalent of burying someone while they are still alive.

BTW - Thank you Paintr for posting all the updates.

Was the building empty - were there no other people cleaning? She must have screamed. I feel so bad for this woman and her family.

I live very close to where this crime occurred. This poor woman.

This creep Pabon did it. He has scratches on his arms, neck, and hands and left work early the night she disappeared and called in sick the next day. Five police cruisers have been stationed outside his house in Staten Island and are following him everywhere, day and night. LE knows he did it; they're just playing their cards carefully and waiting for enough forensic evidence to come in to arrest him.

Pabon had been making unwanted advances toward her for awhile. He lured her to the 8th floor, raped her I imagine, and then to keep her quiet put her in the air conditioning duct - alive. She no doubt died a slow and painful death. Also, the air conditioning duct in which she was found is on the 12th floor of the building, and Pabon was the only one in the building at the time she disappeared with a key to that floor - apparently that floor was out of use and full of air conditioners.

This jerk needs to be locked up forever, no parole. And I hope he gets "Bubba" for a cellmate. I love that his girlfriend and sister are saying he wouldn't hurt a fly, he is a sweet man, and that the police are just 'harassing him.' Give me a break. He did it. He'lll be arrested any minute now.

New York City Police detectives took some final forensic evidence from Eridania Rodriguez's body on Wednesday night as her casket was prepared for shipment overseas.

Evidence form the slain cleaning woman's body is being compared with DNA samples taken from the apparent prime suspect in the case, freight elevator operator Joseph Pabon, who works in the same building where Rodriguez's remains were found bound with tape in an air duct four full days after she went missing on the job.

The Staten Island man under 24-hour police surveillance since the slaying of a cleaning lady in Manhattan, was taken in by cops for additional finger printing this afternoon.

Joseph Pabon, 26, of New Springville, was taken to the 120 Police Precinct stationhouse in St. George on a warrant to obtain additional fingerprints.

Police waited to execute the warrant until his attorney, Mario Gallucci, arrived at 4:48 p.m.
