Jurors in the New York murder trial involving the 1979 disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz say they are deadlocked again.

It is now up to the judge to determine whether or not to accept a hung jury.

In their statement Tuesday morning, the jury said, "After serious, significant and thorough deliberations we remain unable to reach a unanimous decision."

Last week the panel said it was deadlocked and was told by the judge to continue deliberations.

The jury then asked to rehear the trial's closing arguments."

"The jury of seven men and five women said they were hopelessly deadlocked in deciding the fate of Pedro Hernandez, a disabled factory worker from New Jersey. The trial turned on a confession Mr. Hernandez gave 33 years after Etan, who was 6, went missing while walking to a school bus stop in SoHo, an admission that the prosecution argued proved his guilt and that the defense called a fiction invented under police pressure.

“We the jury would like the court to know that after serious significant and thorough deliberations we remain unable to reach a unanimous decision,” the jurors wrote in their note to the judge".

Etan's case is an absolute tragedy his family must be going through living hell with no end in sight.

I am not surprised the jury can't reach a verdict I wonder how much of the jury is split and if the votes have changed at all since day one.

I can't believe the judge has told them twice to try again. Is that common with deadlocked juries in New York? It feels like what he's really trying to do is get the ones in the minority to just cave in.
