I've had friends in NYC sublet/rent out their rooms (on facebook, craigslist) while they are out of town - often over holidays - to make some extra money. The dates are usually flexible - stay for a day/week/month. Sometimes the people who take them up on the offer have never even been to NYC and have no idea about the surroundings.
 
JVM covering this on HLN right now talking to his dad. Says not unusual for Ian to go out without his phone and that told his roommate at last contact he was just "stepping out for the night".

Bloggers aid in search for missing man

According to his New York colleagues, Ian was last seen Dec. 30 leaving the apartment. None of them knew where he was going. Ian’s text to his roommate was the last communication anyone has had.

Ian’s brother, Jamie Burnet, posted on the online form Reddit.com. “His last credit card transactions were for a $20 Metro card on the 30th and a Burger King transaction on the 31st.” The Burnets filed a missing person report Jan. 3 with New Kent Sheriff’s Office. “As of this moment, they (NYPD) do not suspect foul play,” said Sheriff F.W. “Wakie” Howard Jr.

Ian’s father and brother traveled to Harlem to inspect the apartment. It appeared Ian left with very little.

“The [people] he had been staying with had left, and all his bags were left behind. He left his phone, his wallet, his laptop, his iPod, and all his money,” Jamie posted on Reddit. That suggests all he took was his ID, a jacket and the subway card he had just purchased.

JVM picked up on the weirdness with the two "friends" too:

VELEZ-MITCHELL: And what was the relationship between your son and these women?

BURNETT: They — one of them went to school with Ian at VCU. They were acquaintances; it was not a romantic relationship.

KING: No, I didn`t.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Do you think it`s odd that he goes and shares a place with these two women? Do you think — I mean, I don`t know whether they`ve disappeared. Apparently, police are in contact with them, but why wouldn`t they be out here, you know, hollering at the top of their lungs, “Our friend is missing! Help us”?

KING: Your guess is as good as mine. I know that`s exactly what I would be doing. But honestly I have no idea."

The issue with the credit card is strange. If he left his wallet and credit cards in the apartment, yet on one of them was used on Dec 31, did he come back to the apt. again after the 30th? Maybe one of the women staying there saw him, but it is very odd that they have not been more forthcoming with information. I'm sure the police have the information about which Burger King was used for the purchase, and maybe security cameras there could give them info about who used it.

I had read that he took a credit card, a metro card and a jacket with him ? could just be mis reporting,though. I don't understand why his friends left the apartment without meeting his parents.It just seems strange MOO

This article references some reddit posts from the brother, Jamie. Jamie mentions that Ian "left his trees behind" which is a reference to marijuana. This seems to strengthen the theory that Ian may have run into some unsavory characters, maybe while trying to score some dope on the street.

Jamie also worries about suicide in a later reddit post.

How do we know that his friends in the apartment were "vietnamese"? I cannot find any reference to their nationality. All I know about them is:
A) Both female
B) One is also a VCU student
C) They vacated the apartment before the investigation heated up.
D) The father says the police know who they are and have interviewed them.
E) The interviewer from Headline news asked his ex-girlfriend if she thought it was odd that those two friends from the apartment are not involved in the search. The ex agreed it was odd...

Anyone else have any info on these two apartment mates?

"We have heard some things that lead us to believe he may have been last wearing a Wikipedia sweatshirt -> under a blue and white Monument Ave 10K running jacket, and gloves. and probably jeans."

The Wikipedia shirt on the facebook page is gray with long sleeves.

LE tells NBC that his metrocard was used to get on the Northbound No 1 Train at 145th Street on the same day as his disappearance.

It's not MSM, but if you look at the Reddit discussion that Ian's older brother Jamie and his ex-girlfriend are participating in (http://www.reddit.com/r/nyc/comments/o3wnd/my_little_brother_has_been_lost_in_new_york_city/), you'll see the info about the two girls being Vietnamese. FYI, the Reddit post is linked to the NYMag article posted above (by Messina), so hopefully that's "confirmed" enough to be posted here.

I've been wondering if that metrocard was traceable...guess it was. I wonder if security cameras can tell them where he got off?
 
The # 1 train going north from 145th street. It goes up to Washington Heighs,which is a latino,mostly Dominican neighborhood. The train then goes up into the NW Bronx,ending up at 225th street & the Grand Concourse. There is a large housing project not too far from the last stop. I'm baffled ; there is nothing up in that area that I can imagine him wanting to see... I think he may have been doing a hook-up with someone. But that;s just MOO...

On the other hand, the train does stop at 168th street, which is Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. I wonder if he was feeling as though he needed some kind of therapeutic help ?

I just read that he had 3 previous suicide attempts... At this point,I would check Columbia Presbyterian. He had no ID on him, and could have gone to the ER if he was feeling depressed and suicidal. And sadly, the Hudson River also seems a logical place to start looking....

And also in that discussion, it has been mentioned that he went out looking to buy acid ?? In Harlem.On New Year's Eve... But, how was he planning to pay for it ? Was it a debit card that he had on him ?

And the two Vietnamese girls are not wanting to talk ? This is a strange story.MOO
